No. Because you could only protect one goal. They literally had to pick either Murray or Fleury. They could've gotten a guy, sure, but he wouldn't have helped that situation.

Will players be moved this summer to make room to sign any of the free agents this team has?
Jason Mackey
1:09
I don't think for that specific reason, no. They really don't have a bunch of free agents they're keen on re-signing.

Why so glum in your view of Brassard?  Might continuity of linemates benefit him and thereby this team?
Jason Mackey
1:10
I'm not glum. I just think they are, at times, trying to pound a  square peg into a round hole. I think he's a tremendous player. I'm just not sure he's ever going to be a third-line center. That's not fault on him. It's just not what he is.

Why no instigator call on Sceviour or Weeger?  Both went looking for the fight...
Jason Mackey
1:10
Fair point. I would love to interview an NHL on-ice official and ask about that. Oh, wait. You can't.
Why Can't We Be Friends?
1:10
First Oleksiak and now ZAR. I'm pretty much over the fighting in hockey. These guys take enough trauma to the brain just playing the game. When will the NHL and the players wake up and finally put an end to fighting?
Jason Mackey
1:11
Probably when someone dies, honestly. Or they lose a star player. Not even then, to be honest. And also, to be fair, I think the more prevalent opinion of fighting is that people really do like it.

About 3 weeks ago I read an article on Pennsburgh.com (i think) about the future of the WBS Penguins and the possibility of the team moving them. Mostly just conjecture. I was wondering if you had heard anything official in regards to them.
Jason Mackey
1:11
I really, really doubt that's going to happen. Everything I've heard about the partnership has been very positive.

What is wrong with Malkin? It seems like he hasn't played well in a month.
Jason Mackey
1:12
I think he was pressing. He was trying too hard, and the situation was compounding itself. He's been better of late, though. I definitely think it's tracking in the right direction.

On these long west coast trips, have you ever approached Jimmy and Mikey and asked if you would have license to do an all access story?  That is, you dress with the boys in the lockeroom, participate in the practices, hang out in the evenings, get a real feel of the game from a player's perspective and write about it.
Jason Mackey
1:13
If I asked for that, I would get laughed out of the room. While I agree that would be a great story, there's absolutely no way they would let me do it. If they let anyone do it, too, it would most certainly be the team.

What's going on with Malkin?  Do you think he has another one of his mysterious injuries?
Jason Mackey
1:13
Got this one before, TK. Gonna again try to avoid repetitive question. (From here out ...)

There was a tweet a couple days ago from a former NHL scout, Dicklund, saying the Pens we’re discussing another three-way trade with Ottawa and Vegas involving trading Kessel to Vegas and getting Stone in return from Ottawa...have you heard anything about this?
Jason Mackey
1:13
I have not. They're not gonna pull off a trade-deadline with Kessel ... unless things go terribly wrong over the next month.

Early contract projections for upcoming FAs such as ZAR and DeSmith?
Jason Mackey
1:14
Too early, too much can still happen. But I think DeSmith is gonna get a nice little raise. ZAR less, for sure.

Whats' up with the Penguins' play whenever the goalie is pulled and they are trailing in the game?  For the last few games when it has happened, the result has always been the same, the Pens turn over the puck and the other teams scores an empty net goal.  Game over.
Jason Mackey
1:15
I don't think there's anything substantive that I can cite here, sorry. That happens. You're taking a risk.

Do you see the logic in dealing one of the extra dmen (once Schultz returns) for a future 3C like Granlund (VAN), Bennett (CGY)?
Jason Mackey
1:15
Yes, I do. If they make a move for a third-line center, it almost assuredly will involve a defenseman. They're trading from a strength. It's smart.

You are correct, I do think Brassard is a good player, but that's because there isn't really a better option out there. Would I prefer more from him? Absolutely. But I don't think he's horrifically under-performing, and the lack of replacement means that there isn't really a way to trade him that makes sense.

Regardless of that, do you know what the Pens will look to do at the deadline? Just add a depth/4th line forward?
Jason Mackey
1:16
Very likely, yes. And I think you'll see them move out one of their extra defensemen. Once Schultz comes back, there's too many bodies.

Jason, would you rate the Brassard deal(s) one of the worst in Pens history?  They gave up three players and a #1 draft pick. If this trade had been made by a lessor GM, would he have been fired for it?
Jason Mackey
1:16
Not fired for it. I think that's harsh. And I wouldn't put it down as one of the worst in history, either. Has it not panned out as intended? I think so. But I don't fault the process. Brassard is a very good player. Just hasn't been what they expected.

Derek Brassard for Adam Henrique...thoughts ?
Jason Mackey

Can't see what the incentive for Anaheim would be. Also, they'd need to do something else to clear money. It doesn't balance.

Hey, Jason. Pro tip: Grab tacos at La Santisima downtown while you're here.

Thank you!

Do you think Brass gets trade AND where to? ALSO you would have to assume a D would go.. WHO would that be? Thanks for this chat I love it!
Jason Mackey
1:19
I do ... but hard to say where to. Probably a place than can use a top-six center ... or maybe feels it could flip him. ... Yes, a defenseman would be involved. Probably Oleksiak or Ruhwedel.

Given the changes the roster has seen since 2017, should GMJR just have bit the bullet and paid Bonino his 4x4.1?  Not that brassard has been bad, per se, but they had a good thing going with Bones as 3C.  I don’t understand why they felt they couldn’t fit him in.  The JJ contract further confounds me with regards to not paying Bonino for proven success.
Jason Mackey
1:19
I don't think so. That's the perfect case of hindsight being 20/20. At Bonino's age and that sort of deal ... it just doesn't make sense.

Jason, something has to be done about that powerplays of ours. It's nice to have 5 skilled players on the ice at once, but the frequency of very dangerous shorthanded chances is just ridiculous. It's time to break it up into 2 units, each with 2 defensemen! How long can HCMS just keep trotting out that first group and ignore the dangerous chances they give up? I don't know who's at fault, but something must be done.
Jason Mackey
1:20
Um, no. Power play was just 9 for 13, and I don't remember the last time it allowed a SHG. It's been in a bit of a slump right now, but that would be very reactionary. No reason at all to bust it up.
OK, folks. Need to break for a bit here for some reporting. My apologies. I'll be back as soon as I can.
