Is this team really high on Oleksiak or do you think he could be traded? I can’t for the life of me understand why he was signed for three years when he’s the Pens worst D man by a mile. Sullivan must not think much of him either because he gets scratched for Riikola
Jason Mackey

They're fine with it. I wouldn't say they're going to make him a top-pairing guy, but he's a depth defenseman. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if they move him, given how well Pettersson and Johnson have played together.

Jason, you and other Pens reporters keep saying that Simon (an example) can only thrive on the top two lines. If so, why do you think that Brassard, a top 2 line center, should be able to succeed on the 3rd line?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I have my doubts whether Brassard can be an effective third-line center. I think the Penguins may be asking him to be something he's not.

You've been on various segments on 93.7 The Fan from Cook and Joe, the Morning Show, and with Zeise, would you ever consider moving into a different format like radio?  Do you have any goals or aspirations to do something different one day?  Mackey and Mueller has a nice ring to it.
Jason Mackey
1:46
What about Poni? Ha. Nah, I like the radio stuff a lot. Especially being on the Fan regularly. But there's nothing that beats my current gig. I love it.

What does 2 time Stanley Cup Champion coach Mike Sullivan see in Wilson and Grant that most of us fans do not?  Are these two really the best the Pens can do when injuries arise?
Jason Mackey
1:47
To be fair, he hasn't played Grant a lot. I think only once since mid-December. As for Wilson, they like the physical threat he provides, especially because they can play him and sit Oleksiak. I know they also like him locker room presence, how he's received by teammates, etc. Thirdly, some PK stuff and forechecking work in there, too.

I actually don’t see brassard getting traded seems like they really like him and are trying to make him
Jason Mackey

Fair point, Colin.

Look out for the Panama Red during your Dead nostalgia trip. Good chats, btw

Thank you!

Do you think Ruhwedel will get some playing time soon?  I can't remember the last time he played.
Jason Mackey
1:48
Probably not, honestly. Their defense has been very steady. I wouldn't mess with it.

PG, The FAN, KDKA - TV:  Are you trying to rival the King of all media with your appearances these days?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Haha. Yeah, right. It's the same stuff Ed Bouchette does. The perks of being on the beat, I suppose.

How is it possible that for weeks no one knew what was wrong with Murray, people guessing as to some psychological issues, confidence, etc. then he suddenly goes on IR with a mysterious injury, and now he's suddenly Matt Murray again. Did someone miss the boat for a while? Is there more to the story?
Jason Mackey
1:49
He played through an injury. That happens all the time, every postseason. We don't see medical records before games, so I don't know how I'm supposed to diagnose a pulled groin. And every team lets guys play through nagging injuries.

Do you think JR has an interest in finding another top 6 winger since Simon and sometimes Rust are a little iffy as top 6 players? Do you think there’s any interest in Dzingel from Ottawa? I like him as a player and he’s fast
Jason Mackey
1:50
I don't see Rust and Simon as being "iffy" as top-six wings. Neither do the Penguins, honestly. GMJR might do something, if it makes sense, but it won't be because they think those two are incapable.

Do you think Coyle from Minnesota would be a good fit at 3C?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I do. But I also don't see Minnesota moving him, at least not right now.

Hi Jason. Always enjoy your chat sessions. Do you think that once Justin Shultz returns that perhaps the Pens will trade Jack Johnson and replace him with Riikola in the lineup?  It seems to me that Riikola is too much of a talent to leave on the bench and has also shown a physical presence at times. I’m sure the Pens have a strategy for Judtin’s Return.
Jason Mackey
1:51
I think Oleksiak is more likely to get traded at that point than Johnson. They like what Jack has done with Pettersson, and given the length of his contract, he's probably tough to move.

Jason, why has Oleksiak fallen out of favor with the Pens coaches/management? I think he is a pretty good D-man.
Jason Mackey
1:51
Fallen out of favor isn't the proper way of putting it. I just think they have better guys and defenseman who offer better fits.

When Shultz comes back and if Malkin gets to old form....where do we stand against Toronto, Washington, etc...are we a contender?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Absolutely. I think the Penguins are every bit as good those teams ... assuming Schultz comes back solid, Malkin plays to his normal level and everything else that has happened recently continues.

Second the La Santisima recommendation. You don't even have to go into dowtown Phoenix--they have a place on Glendale Ave now, a few miles from the arena.

On the hockey front,  if they don't make a trade involving him, what do you think the chances Ruhwedal will be claimed are if they waive him for the purpose of reassigning him to WBS?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Probably very good. That's why I think a trade is much more likely.

Why did the Ducks let Petterson go?  Was he not performing there because he looks great here.
Jason Mackey
1:53
They needed/need offense. I don't think he was as good, mind you, but they knew he was a decent player; they just repurposed something they had plenty of for something they needed. Pretty much a hockey trade.

I am sure Sid would play 60 minutes if he could, but do you think playing him on the PK makes senses?  It adds minutes and he could get hurt blocking a shot.
Jason Mackey
1:53
I do. He's very good. And Sullivan likes using three forward tandems because those who are doing it can be more aggressive. Sid helps them do that.

I get Brassard does not want to be a third liner, but has he seen the tape of the 2016 stanley cup team?  the third line were the stars!
Jason Mackey
1:54
And he might get there. Who knows? Brassard could still well be fine with Pearson and Kessel.

Any news on Hornqvist...will he miss any games on the road trip?
Jason Mackey

Not until after practice today.

Malkin's most common defensive linemate on the ice has been Jack Johnson.  Sid's is Letang.  Based on Johnson's play, I'm not surprised Malkin has been struggling.  It works alot better when you can play Sid with Letang and Malkin with Schultz; both get a puck moving offensive defenseman.  I think Malkin's play will take off when Schultz comes back.  Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:54
We're blaming Jack Johnson for Evgeni Malkin's struggles? This might be a bit much.
