do you think the Pens will now shy away from fighting unless absolutely necessary now that Oleksiak missed time and now lost his spot in the line-up, and now poor ZAR is out after starting to be an important part of this team.  I wish they would get rid of the fighting.  I cringe watching it.

I don't think they will, honestly. I think they view it as an essential part of the game, and this is just the cost of doing business. It is dumb, though. I'd be fine with it being gone, but I don't think that will ever happen.

Hi again Jason. Why not trade Brassard and Johnson and get a decent third line center who has no qualms of being a third line center. Perhaps a club looking fir a rental top six center would oblige?  Johnson is just too slow and might be one way to rid us of that big contract. Perhaps they can also trade Maata and get a depth winger. I’d prefer to play Oleksiak and Riikola and add speed to the line up.

Johnson has been fine. That third pair has been very solid. And who's gonna take that contract, plus Brassard, for an effective 3C? That doesn't balance.

Were you ever a Penguins fan?  If so, when did you go cold turkey on your feelings forward the team?  It would seem to be hard to maintain.
Jason Mackey

I was. I grew up here, in Brentwood, and grew up a Penguins fan. My dad was a huge hockey guy. ... It's fairly easy, honestly. It's work. I try to think like a fan, but it honestly doesn't matter in my work day one bit whether they win or lose. ... Plus, I'm a bigger fan of newspapers and the P-G, and I want to do the best job I can.

Any rumoured names linked to pens? Or any one you see making sense as a trade acquisition moving forward?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Ferland was one, and I think it makes sense. We covered that plenty early. Cost to acquire would be tough, though.

who do you think we will go after at the deadline and who do you think will be traded at mentioned deadline. Is Oleksiak, Riikola, Ruwhedel now expandable seeing as how the pens will soon have 9 capable NHL dmen?
Jason Mackey
1:57
I'm not picking random names out of the entire NHL, sorry. I think Oleksiak and Ruhwedel are expendable. I think they want to hang onto Riikola.

what are the Pens looking for???
Jason Mackey
1:58
Could be a third-line center or a depth forward. I think they think they're pretty good on defense, and I agree. Sure they wouldn't mind working on the pipeline (picks and prospects) either.

I know you like Sid for the Selke this year (fingers crossed); what about Letang for the Norris? (Also fingers crossed!)
Jason Mackey
1:58
Absolutely. But he isn't getting the buzz he deserves right now, unfortunately.

Jason like always great work.
Jason Mackey

Thanks, Andy.

What are the chances they could get Mats Zuccarello??? Wayne Simmonds maybe a possibility???
Jason Mackey
1:59
Doubtful on both fronts.

Hi Jason. One final question. Any chance that the Pens try to get Hagelin back at least as a rental player. I kind of noticed that Malkin’s play and our play with an empty net has gone downhill since the trade for Pearson. Even though Hagelin has been injured, I still believe that we lost that trade. Hagelin speed and his play in the corners is severely missed. I doubt that Los Angeles hangs on to him and I’d really hate to see one of our rivals like Washington, Columbus or even the Islanders come up with him.
Jason Mackey

I think there's a chance, yes, but I don't think it's very good. They would have to send dollars out, and they would be very heavy on the wings. But I don't think they would rule it out. L.A. might also want too much.

Do you see any evidence of the Penguins not playing into last June leaving them any fresher this season or will it eventually be more noticeable in the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
2:00
No evidence. They started out like crap. I'm not sure I'm buying the longer summer argument at this point.

Jason, are you at all scared for the return from this trip? Last time the Pens went on an extended road trip they excelled mightily, only to return and fall flat. Any fear of a repeat this time?
Jason Mackey
2:00
Not at all. I think they were a much different team back then. But it is an interesting point you bring up. I hadn't thought of that.

Jason, will you have any free time in Las Vegas next Saturday? Would love to buy you a drink, a slice of pizza or whatever you want!
Jason Mackey
2:01
Sorry, Shawn. Not much. Appreciate the offer, though. With it being the second night of a back-to-back, we're in and out.

With the way things are going, do you think making a move just for the sake of a move is a good idea? I mean Brassard to me is the best option with what is out there, and with the Defenseman you may have to move just because of numbers, but do you realistically think Oleksiak or Ruhwedal would be able to bring in something that can help?
Jason Mackey
2:01
I would not make a move for the sake of making a move. Only if you can improve your team or your farm system.

Has Oleksiak fallen that far or have other additions to the team proven more talented?
Jason Mackey
2:01
I think they like other guys more. That's all. And I think Sullivan might play the matchup game a little bit with Oleksiak and Ruhwedel in the meantime.
Steve
2:01
Jason, what do you think of the offside challenge rule? I know it helped the penguins win 2 cups, but its borderline ridiculous that you can challenge a subtle offside that happened so long prior to the goal. Don't you think there should be a time limit, say 10 seconds, otherwise its too late?
Jason Mackey
2:02
I don't like it at all, Steve, and I realize what you're saying. I wish they scaled back replay in all sports. It takes the fun out of it.
OK, folks. Thanks so much for participating. Have a story to write now on Carl Hagelin. Until next week ...
