If anything is possible, I think I'd take Coyle. But 1. That's probably not possible and 2. There's a lot of ... interesting names on that list.

how much say does Sully get with GMJR?  is it a 50/50 collaboration in your estimation?  R Hainsey (45gp, 15 pts, +23) @ $3mil/season for two years or J Johnson (46gp, 11pts, -6) @ $3.25 mil/season for five years... which would u rather have?
Jason Mackey
1:35
I would take Hainsey to answer the first part of your question, but I also don't think it was reasonable to expect Hainsey to do what he's done whenever he left. He's had a heck of a second or third career with the Leafs. ... To answer the first part, a very significant part. I can't put a percentage on it, but GMJR takes Sullivan's input very seriously. They talk often, and Sullivan pushes for guys. Certainly did with Brassard.

Hi jason, looking down the road at the schedule remaining and how tight the metro division is at the moment, what chances do you think that the pens could fall out of contention and possibly miss the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
1:36
I don't think they're in danger of that happening.
Chase

Who does Blandisi most likely play like in the NHL just for comparison of styles
Jason Mackey
1:36
Pageau from Ottawa would be the best I could give you.

With Murray’s injury history, is GMJR actively looking for a goalie or will he stick with DeSmith at #2?
Jason Mackey
1:36
He'll stick with DeSmith.
Joe
1:36
I might be in the slim minority on this but I actually don’t think brass goes
Jason Mackey
1:37
I'll say this about GMJR: He's not going to trade Brassard just for the sake of trading Brassard. He wants to get more from that position. If Brassard winds up giving them what they need, Jim will be fine to sit this one out.

Along the lines of the trade talk, what do you think this Pen's team needs to compete against the top teams like the Lightning, Caps, etc?
Jason Mackey
1:37
We've been talking about it, but I think the biggest need is more from that 3C spot. ... That and to stay healthy.
Georgio Armani

This spring come playoffs, are the Pens going to be 'growers' or 'showers' ?
Jason Mackey
1:38
I'm not even sure the difference here. Or the point.

Brassard and 3rd round pick for Edmonton 1st round pick.  Oiler keep McD and Draisaitel together, Brassard #2, RNH #3C.  could be formidable and they need to make playoffs now.  Pens flip #1 pick for Duchene
Jason Mackey
1:39
I'll say this about that strategy ... it is one.

At the halfway point of the season, do you still have the same teams winning their respective divisions as you predicted in the beginning of the year? Why do you think Anaheim doesn’t fire the coach instead of making all these trades? They seemed to have a good mix of young and old players and a solid goalie.
Jason Mackey
1:40
Really surprised Carlyle has a job, Amy. That's been stunning. But, yeah, I can't remember off-hand who I picked, but I'm pretty sure I had Tampa and Toronto ... Pens and Washington ... Winnipeg, Nashville ... Don't think I picked Calgary. Think I went with either San Jose or Vegas in the Pacific.
Steve
1:40
The game in San Jose was demoralizing. Pens were outclassed. Just a bad night or a wake up call about how far away they still are?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I think it was an off-night. They're not that bad. I think they started feeling a little too good about themselves. Also have to give San Jose credit; Sharks were and are really good.
Steve
1:41
When Brassard gets traded, do you think all the chats will be cancelled because there is apparently nothing else to talk about?
Jason Mackey
1:41
Yeah, just like they went away after trading _______ , third-line center talk and Daniel Sprong. ... It's just the topic on everyones' minds. Nuthin' wrong with that. Shows yinz care.
Sydney
1:42
Hey Jason, what are your thoughts on a 1-1 trade between Adam Lowry from Winnipeg and Brassard? The Jets are looking for Paul Stastny 2.0 and Lowry is a solid 3rd line center and penalty killer who could potentially mesh with Kessel. Also on a very team friendly contract.
Jason Mackey
1:43
I think that would be great for the Penguins, but I question how much sense that makes for the Jets, honestly.

Who is your favorite local talk show to go on and out of town talk show?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Don't really have a favorite out of town show; those are all the same. In town? Man, that's tough. I can't pick between my main three: Fan Morning Show, The PM Team and Cook & Joe. That's like picking one of your kids. But it's one of those three.
Steve
1:45
Can HCMS please do something about the power play and all the short handed goals?!?! it is ridiculous. Try something different. Different combination of players. Can’t have Malkin and Kessel play and stickhandle with the puck high in the zone or the neutral zone. Enough already! Those two should be on separate units.
Jason Mackey
1:46
Eh, I don't agree with that line of thinking, Steve. They're their two best PP guys. They need to play the entire time. When Schultz gets back, that does help Sullivan a lot. Gives him another look without messing with anything too much. They also need Hornqvist ... and to just be more responsible defensively, which Sullivan has tried to get them to do.

Sundqvist (6’3” 209#) 37gp, 8g, 6a, +1 @ 700k/year cap hit vs Riley Sheahan (6’3” 214#) 45gp, 6g, 2a, -6 @ $2.1mil/year cap hit... what am I missing?  Pearson’s numbers are basically the same with Pens (30gp, 8g, 5a, -2) @ $3mill/year for 2 more seasons.
Jason Mackey
1:47
Not much. Other than the fact that they traded Sundqvist to the Blues for Ryan Reaves. ... I'm not sure I get your point here, though, to be honest.
Mark
1:47
Hi Jason.  Thanks for the chat.  Can you make me understand why a skilled player such as Brassard can not kill penalties?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Good question, Mark. I struggle to understand some of that myself, too. ... Some of it is instinct. It's also understanding what the PK is trying to do, in addition to a willingness/comfortability blocking shots that was never really asked of Brassard before.  I also think it's a thing because if you try it and it doesn't work, then all of a sudden everyone freaks out over why they did it, etc.
Steve
1:48
I don’t believe you can judge malkins play by a point streak. Most of those points are on PP. it’s by how engaged he is, how energetic he appears, etc and he’s been bad for long time
Jason Mackey
1:49
I'm not saying he's been perfect. My point is that I think some of the criticism he's endured is a little harsh.

What kind of “captainy” things does Sid do off the ice that help the team?  I’ve always been curious about his particular leadership style away from the actual game.
Jason Mackey

After practices -- this is always fun to see -- say there's a new guy You can guarantee Crosby is waiting around, chatting the guy up. Always talking to people. Representing the organization in charity functions. HIs work ethic. How obsessed he is with everything, leading by example, that sort of thing.

Jason.  Thanks for the great articles and chat.  This team needs a depth scorer, preferably left side to move into real contender status, do u agree?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I think they need another bottom-six element, yes. Easy route is a 3C. But it could also be a wing.

When Schultz returns, you think Pens more likely to move Maatta or Oleksiak? Or possibly another dman?
