Oleksiak.

Since Brassard doesn't fit the Penguins style, what type of player does? Obviously they want someone that can work with Kessel. What type of characteristics/style would a new 3C need if acquired in a trade? And are there any players that come to mind?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Characteristics, because we covered the other stuff: Someone who's cool being a 3C ... someone who probably does two of the following four things: does something on a PP2, wins faceoffs, kills penalties, plays decent D. They don't need 4 for 4, but they'd prefer 2 for 4.

not sure this went through, apologies if it’s a repeat.  Brass and a pick for EDM 1st round pick (5th overall).  Oilers keep McD and Draisaitel together, Brass 2C, RNH 3C would be a deep team.  Pens flip #1 pick and Oleksiak for Duchene
Jason Mackey
1:52
It did. I got it earlier.

I know you're not a fan of too much trade speculation, but do you think the Pens/GMJR might be interested in talking to the Hurricanes about Jordan Staal? I believe there were rumors about that last year. My thought is it seems like the Pens could use more of a defense-minded guy in the 3C slot and the Canes could use a top-six guy, which Brassard might be able to fill nicely. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think it would be very hard to swing cap-wise, and I have no idea why the Canes would want to remove one of their franchise players amid a playoff push,

Do you think Sid will garner much attention for the Hart Trophy this year? He has been so crucial to the Pens turning it around and, while he has a good supporting cast, so does every other top scorer in the league right now.
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think it depends on what the Penguins win. If they take the division, yes, I think he could. But if they finish third, no, I don't think so.

Am i the only one who thinks dealing a 3rd line center and a d man might be rough to do in bringing back another 3rd line center?  Usually teams dont give up what they need unless its a change of scenery scenario.  Can u think of any that would fit the bill?  or is this more likely two trades?
Jason Mackey
1:54
I don't think we're looking at strictly a change of scenario. We're looking at a different situation. And it might take three teams, honestly. You need a team with a 2C need. There's Brassard. Then you need a team that wants a D (Oleksiak) and a third with a 3C to offer.

Jason, I kno the big topic is Brassy and the need to replace him but the most important need on this Pens team is too add some toughness to this line up. And NO im not talking Fighting tough, i mean more of a sand paper guy that doesnt do the standard "Penguin Fly Bye". My dream would be Kreider-NYR or Ferland-CAR but what do u think of getting either Sid or Geno an actual player that puts fear into the other team? I absolutely hate Tom Wilson, but if u watch WSH games, its clear to see how much room he opens up for his other wingers or just by making players move the puck way faster than needed. IMO, that is what this team is lacking , how about you?
Jason Mackey
1:56
Hi Mark. Hope you're well. I think that's how they think of Garrett Wilson, honestly. That's one of the reasons -- and I get that people disagree with this line of thinking -- Rutherford likes him so much.

Do you think we see Murray vs. Fleury this weekend?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I think so. I think it makes sense to play DeSmith tomorrow and save Matt for Vegas.

IMHO, based on watching hockey for 48 years, I think that having the back-up goalie start 35-40 games is VERY HIGH. I would think that the ratio would be 67-33%
Jason Mackey
1:57
Right. Typically. ... I think -- OK, I know -- that Rutherford is a fan of playing his starter less, especially one who has had his fair share of injuries. So, you have your opinion and that's cool. But it's not one shared by the GM.

Does Mario go to any away games?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Very few. Although I think he's out here because of meetings and Austin playing at ASU.
Steve

Other than brassard, any other forward that may be dealt? What about phil, you think he’s safe? Has had a down year so far IMO
Jason Mackey
1:57
Phil's not going anywhere. Except maybe to Rivers.

Geez, Staal wasnt on a Hall of Fame path while he was here.....
Jason Mackey
1:58
Would've been interesting to see what he would've done here with age and linemates was my point.

Is Jordan stall still as good as he was and is he available?
Jason Mackey
1:58
I don't think he's available.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, a player goes on waivers when going from the NHL to the AHL.  They are not put through waivers when getting called up from the AHL.  Blandisi had been in the AHL since the end of October.  Waiver exemption lasts 30 days, so that has long expired.  If the Penguins want to send him to WBS, he'll have to clear again.  I do agree with the assessment that Blandisi is more likely to pass through waivers than Grant, but, the whole reasoning by GMJR sounds like lip service.
Jason Mackey
1:59
I get what you're saying. I think GMJR believes what you said and what I said earlier. I think he just tried to avoid saying it that way. I think.

It seems like GMJR really wants a power forward to "compete" against Wilson. The main target seems to be Ferland, but anyone else you can see filling that type of role?
Jason Mackey
1:59
I think we're linking guys to Wilson entirely too much. They're not going to go out and get Ferland to "compete" against Wilson. If they get Ferland, it's because he's a good player, and he can help them.

You have been around him enough to know his personality. Is it that he doesn’t want to be in pitt(brassard) does he feels he above playing here? Or is this not the take at all. I’d keep him TBH he’s cheap and talented. And also proven to be effective in playoffs
Jason Mackey
2:00
I don't think he's above playing here, but I think he's being asked to do something -- center the third line and not get much PP time -- that he's not entirely comfortable with. I think he's tried, but I also think it hasn't worked. And it's probably time for all parties involved to admit that.

I think a lot of people agree with GMJR that Brassard is a disappointment , but what purpose does it serve for him to say that publicly?
Jason Mackey
2:01
I guess he was trying to motivate Brassard? Not sure. That was strange to see, for sure.
Kal

I know there are tons of reports out there that brass goes. But honestly i think they should stick with him? Do you think there is considerable truth to these rumors ? Or do you believe JR saying to you that basically the media is just having a go
Jason Mackey
2:02
No, I think they're considering it and have considered it. But I think GMJR is only going to do it for the right situation. I don't think Columbus is that, unless Jarmo is doing something stupid over there.

Will Fleury win the Vezina this year?
Jason Mackey
2:03
Have to think it's either him or Vasilevskiy at this point.

Why was Reaves jettisoned out but Wilson is loved by mgmt? Reaves at least provides some offense while doing the things they like about Wilson
Jason Mackey
2:04
That's a very good point. I'm not sure. The descriptors from decision-makers are the same. I think they view Wilson as a little bit more helpful of a hockey player, but I'm not sure I agree with that. Especially when you consider what little of a chance Reaves got and how good of a fighter he is.
