There were reports of the jets balking at the idea of Brassard for Lowry, is Brassards value at all time low right now?
Jason Mackey
1:38
Hi folks. Out of the Penguins dressing room. Let's do this.
I don't think that has anything to do with Brassard's value. It makes no sense for the Jets to do that.

How are the "c" and "A" designations determined.  Is it on the basis of salary?  In my view there's no way Hornquist is not and "A".
Jason Mackey
1:39
It's a combination of coaches' and players' decision. Has nothing to do with salary. More presence of a player. But you're right. Hornqvist is an "A" in everything but title.

Tampa showed last night that teams can take runs at the Penguins' star players without any worry about being held accountable.  How long will management allow this to continue?  Yeah, the Pens won on the scoreboard, but could be without Letang if things had turned out differently.
Jason Mackey
1:39
I don't think they're worried about their physicality ... or think that they lack it. Rutherford said as much on the Fan this morning.

Jason, I feel like a lot people say that the Pens need to be harder to play against. I think Blandisi could fill that role and I thought he looked great in his very limited one game appearance. What did you think of his performance?
Jason Mackey
1:40
I think it was one game ... and too hard to draw any conclusions from. But I saw nothing that would indicate he HAS to be up there. They're a better team if he's not in the lineup, honestly. Means they're deeper.

What type of return do you see for brassard in a trade? Also do you think it's more likely we trade him or just keep him for a cup run and ultimately lose him for nothing in the off-season?
Jason Mackey
1:40
I see them getting picks/prospects back, then using those in a potential second deal. ... And yeah, I think it's entirely likely they keep him. I wouldn't rule that out at all. The options aren't great.

Jason, you think the Pens could make a play for Panarin? I would imagine the package would start with Brassard + other pieces. Columbus seems to want NHL pieces in any return so they can continue the push for the playoffs. I feel like he’d be a prefect line mate for Geno.
Jason Mackey
1:42
I don't think so, no. I think Columbus will want more than the Penguins are comfortable giving up, and I doubt the Blue Jackets would do business in the division.

What LW do you think would be the best for for the penguins on the market and who might be in their price range?
Jason Mackey
1:42
My choice would be Ferland. Price range would be $2-$3 million, I'd think, and he falls well below that.

Is there any truth to the rumors coming from several sources in Montreal that the Habs are aggressively trying to get Maatta?
Jason Mackey
1:44
I can't speak to the Canadiens' plans, but I can tell you that the Penguins have zero interest in trading Maatta. Not that they wouldn't listen -- hey, if they wanna give up three firsts, I'm sure GMJR would do it -- but they'd like to play Olli with Schultz when the latter returns.
Mike
1:45
Why do you think that the penguins always lose vs the bad teams and always get up and play well for the good teams?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Because they're a very good team. But they know it and tend to think they can get away with stuff. Used the analogy in today's paper that they're like some smart kids in school. They'll ace tests, but they also might stare out the window if they don't feel like learning that day.

Are you aware of any study which shows how well Corsi correlates with winning? I recall reading that in football, going back through the years adjusted-yards-per-pass attempt lines up pretty well with actually winning games. I'm wondering if there's that type of correlation for the stat so many of us focus on in hockey.
Jason Mackey
1:47
I'm not aware of one, Doley, but I think you make an interesting point. So much emphasis on puck possession, yet you have stuff like we saw last night -- Tampa is 20-3-1 when it gets outshot. Puck possession isn't everything, and I'd be curious to see how winning the shot clock correlates to winning the game.

So when a referee checks a player like last night with sheahan, did Tampa get credit for a hit or did the ref get credit for a hit? Also, I've started that petition to get shots off the post count as shots on goal... That's what we're working on at Kramerica Inc.
Jason Mackey

Good, good. Tell Darren I said hi. No, it doesn't not. And I agree, I think they should.

Is Bryan Rust playing the best hockey of his career? He was terrific last night.
Jason Mackey
1:48
He very well might be. Rust has been tremendous since his hat trick, and I really like him game with Malkin. I think those two complement each other well.

It's obvious that GM JR wants to upgrade the forward position.  Do you get the sense, that whatever asset they acquire will be here past this season?  The roster is aging, and they can't afford to waste top picks on rentals (Ferland).
Jason Mackey
1:49
I think there are good options on both sides. I don't think they're beholden to one or the other.

Wilson seems to be getting better each game.  Does he get bumped when ZAR gets back?
Jason Mackey
1:49
I think it's still TBD. ZAR has a ways to go. There's no need to rush a decision now.

A first rounder and two players for Jake Muzzin??  Did JR miss an opportunity to make a deal with Toronto?
Jason Mackey
1:49
For what? Who on Toronto's team would GMJR be trying to get?

Any possibility that Michael Ferland deal happens this weekend? Penguins involved?
Jason Mackey
1:50
Penguins have been involved. They like Ferland a lot. And yes, it sounds like it could happen inside of two weeks.

Jason--big fan of your work.  Aren't we just watching a team that has won 2 cups in the past 3 years being bored of the regular season except when it's a fun game like last night?  It's 82 games to decide the top half of the league.  Shultz comes back soon and flip Brassard because he'd never resign here (or don't) and let's just get the playoffs rolling.
Jason Mackey
1:50
I think you're bang on, Michael, although I think the NHL is gonna hold strong about forcing the Penguins -- and everyone else -- to play all 82 before starting the playoffs. Thanks for the kind words.

what's your assessment of bluegers debut?  Does he have a chance to stick around?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I liked the energy. I think there's more there. He didn't look out of place. I'd like to see him on the PK. But the fourth line was good, and I'm curious to see what happens Friday, because it sure sounds like Brassard will be healthy enough to play.

It may be a coincidence, but it seems Malkin's slide started when Hagelin was traded.  Any chance they bring him back to help Malkin?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Malkin is one of the top 100 players in NHL history. I don't know about the notion that they need to bring someone in to babysit him. They do need to find the right person there, and I think Rust may be him. That said, depending on cost, if L.A. was willing to take back some money on Hagelin, I might try.

I think they need to wear their third jerseys more.  They seem to always play well when they are wearing them!  And you also need to continue to predict wins :)
