Jason , if the net result of Brassard being traded is Shaehan as their third line center , that’s a step back and not a Cup contender in my opinio
Jason Mackey
2:22
Fair. I think you need to look at it, though, as, say, Ferland, Sheahan and _____ on the third line. Or better wing, Sheahan and ______. But I see your point.

Teddy B auditioning for next year in place of Sheahan or Brassard?  Both free agents after season?
Jason Mackey
2:22
Yeah, sorta. I think they're already prepared to turn the page to Teddy next season. I think they're seeing what they have in him now before deciding which direction to go here. But I don't think either Brassard or Sheahan will be back.

Do you think they could of got more for Big rig than they got, even if it was just a 3rd? Seems like teams are always looking for serviceable defense-man.
Jason Mackey
2:23
I think so, yeah, but if Jim got the sense talks were heating up and needed to clear money, then I think it makes sense to do it now. I think there's more context we need to consider.

any chance Bjustad from Florida would be a target for JR? Having an off year but still has tons of talent. Might take a Maata and a number one though, no?
Jason Mackey
2:23
Yeah, probably. I don't see Florida doing that.

To me, the main issue with the power play is that the zone entries are a mess which leads to a variety of consequences. How can it be that such a talented group can't at least establish possession? Are they too hard headed to try to do something different than the drop pass? Also, why not, at least to mix up their look, go with 2 guys on top at the points?
Jason Mackey
2:24
Dear God, more power-play tinkering. You'd think they never scored a power-play goal. Or were the NHL's best in decades last season. And we're not even talking about short-handed goals here.

Darren passes on his best, says keep up the great work and he thinks you have a great future in journalism. Good to see Malkin with some giddy up in his game last night. Have seen a suggestion to have 19 center the 2nd line with 71 on the wing with someone like Rust, any thoughts on that? Darren and I think brassard is worth keeping BTW... Thanks for the chat!
Jason Mackey
2:25
I wouldn't do that. Although I might put a depth chart next to Brassard's locker that has his line as the second line and Malkin's listed third, just to make him feel better.
james
2:25
Why not try Bras in the top PP unit instead of Malkin.  Give Malkin a mental break and see if you can motivate Bras with important minutes
Jason Mackey
2:25
You want to replace a $9.5 million player, who you would very much insult, with someone who could be a healthy scratch at any point and barely anyone would protest?
Ryan
2:25
Is there a possibility of acquiring Ferland and Staal in the same deal?
Jason Mackey
2:25
I don't think Staal is an option, from what I've been told.
Bill
2:25
Have you ever previously interacted with a GM like Jim Rutherford that is so open and candid about his plans and thoughts? Guy doesnt hold back things and to me that's a breath of fresh air.
Jason Mackey
2:26
No. And I think a lot of beat reporters would say the same. He's a rare breed. I cherish every day getting to cover someone like Jim. Whether he wins another Cup or runs this team into the ground, I appreciate my opportunity to cover someone so unique. It'll probably never happen again. He's more open than most high school coaches I've dealt with. It's great.

You hinted after Oleksiak's trade this could signal another move.  I see this squad as good not great and mortgaging the farm (like they did for Bras) when one player won't make you the team to beat, so shouldn't GMJR stand pat?
Jason Mackey
2:27
It depends on what's out there. But if you're asking me, I think they have at least one more move to make. Third line isn't enough of a consistent threat.

Do you know if the Penguins put in a QO on Bengtsson when he signed in Sweden like they did with Pedan when he went to Russia?
Jason Mackey
2:27
I'm not sure, JohnAl. Sorry.

2:27
Hi Jason! Who would YOU want to see in a Pens Uni after the trade deadline?  PS: love the new hair style
Jason Mackey
2:27
I didn't know I had a new hair style. My move would Brian Boyle from Jersey, if Shero would do it.
JohnAl
2:28
Do you know if the Penguins intend to sign Zachary Lauzon to a contract? He missed most of last year with injury and will miss this entire year through injury as well.
Jason Mackey
2:28
I would be surprised if they do. Been hurt too much.
JohnAl
2:28
Just a little housekeeping thing on your latest article about trade deadline options. Ferland is going to be a UFA, not an RFA.
Jason Mackey
2:28
Doh. Thank you. Changing now.
Bill
2:29
I've been on the Brian Boyle train for a while.... can you see what you can do to influence that to GMJR, Jason?
Jason Mackey
2:29
Ha. Makes no difference to me, Bill. I'm just saying it's what I would do if I were JIm. I'm sure he has many more considerations that I do.

2:29
Have you thawed out yet? Are you staying warm? Are you wearing extra socks and underwear at the moment?
Jason Mackey
2:30
Ha. A little personal thing. Yes, I'm trying to stay warm. Rocking some wool socks and a hoodie at the moment. Normal amount of underwear.
Kool-Aid Man
2:30
Why do the Pens go with Royal cola or whatever dollar store brand that is. This is the big leagues, you either play with the big boys and get Coke, or quite frankly.....You leave the party
Jason Mackey
2:31
Yes, you're right. Their pop -- yes, I'm calling it that -- sponsorship completely robs them of any legitimacy. Mickey Mouse organization all the way.
JC
2:31
Joining late, so if its been answered sorry.....Why would we not try Sheahan yesterday at the Center Position?
Jason Mackey
2:31
They might. He's a center. That's surely an option for them.
JC
2:31
Is it possible to move Malkin to Brassard's wing to really load up and move Sheahan to center for 3rd line?  Going 71-19-81, 59-87-12, 17-15-72, 14-7-46 when all healthy
Jason Mackey
2:32
It's possible. It's not likely. Or reasonable. But it is possible.
Ted
2:32
Do you think brassard is 100% out of pitt?
Jason Mackey
2:32
Maybe not 100, but at least 85.
