I think Ferland could be an upgrade -- although obviously not a center. My pick would be Brian Boyle, personally.

The Pen's power play has been MIA for awhile now.  The power play did nothing on the back-to-back 5 on 3 and 5 on 4 last night.  What is it going to take for Sullivan to make changes? What is he waiting for?  Justin Schultz?
Jason Mackey
2:09
Schultz will be an option, sure, but I think it's smart to remember the Penguins are sixth in the league -- I believe -- on the power play. It's not all terrible. I think they get a little too fancy, but your first reaction can't always been to remove guys. Need to tweak what they're doing first.

If it's still this cold for the Pens/Flyers Stadium Series game, do you think the NHL would move the game?  After all, they moved the 2011 Winter Classic from a perfect day to a rainy one...
Jason Mackey
2:09
I can only hope.

TSN mentioned Brayden Schenn as a player who could be on the move if the Blues fall a little further out of the playoff picture (https://www.tsn.ca/brayden-schenn-a-classic-buy-low-candidate-1.124996...). It seems like Schenn would be a classic fit for the Penguins 3C slot. Do you think that's an option GMJR will/should explore?
Jason Mackey
2:10
Explore yes, depending on acquiring cost. Have some questions about this year's numbers but it may be team-related. In the end, I'd probably pass because I think you can get similar production for a lot less salary-wise.

Do you think that the pens think teddy is good enough to shuffle out brassard?
Jason Mackey
2:11
No. Even if they traded Brassard, I think they'd like to get someone else in that spot to at least sort of replace Brassard.

Due to the nature of players personalities in the NHL, you don't hear much about religious beliefs or political affiliation or stances like you often do in the NFL (the only thing I can think of is the "you can play" campaign). I'm curious if there are any players in the organization who are religious and if the team has any resources available for players who are practicing (i.e. chaplains, etc.)? What's that like for players given that they travel a ton? Thanks!
Jason Mackey
2:12
The team does some, not a ton. And a couple players are into it -- I won't name them because I don't know if they want that. Cullen, though, is one, and I've talked to him on the record about it. You can more of that here: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/penguins/2018/08/10/matt-cullen-pe...

A first rounder and two players for Jake Muzzin????  Did GMJR miss an opportunity with (to fleece) Toronto?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I don't think so. Who would GMJR give up, Maatta? I don't think they want to do that, and if Olli can reliably play with Schultz, I don't blame Jim.

Any chance the pens go after Staal?
Jason Mackey
2:13
Which one? Eric is on a playoff team, and my understanding is that Jordan is staying put in Carolina, presumably for personal preference.
Seth
2:13
Ferland for brass — Carolina can use brass they need center going into the future correct? He can sign with them long term?
Jason Mackey
2:14
I don't see why he would want to do that, one. Two, the Hurricanes can get more than Brassard elsewhere. Why would they trade him to the Pens? Those might be principle elements, but the Penguins would have to sweeten the pot quite a bit.

Boyle for Brassard, thoughts...
Jason Mackey
2:14
Where do I sign? And why would Ray do that?

What are your thoughts on whether the Pens will look for a rental (assuming Brass goes) versus someone they can lock up for a few years?
Jason Mackey
2:15
I think it depends on the best option for this year. The rest is workable. But they need someone now.

Hello Jason! first of all, I wanna thank you, really! English is a second language for me, and I found out my Eng writing skill has improved a lot since I've followed daily your Pens news coverage. It means a lot! ^_~
Secondly, about my star! Geno... do you believe yesterday it was a statement by him saying: I'm not done yet! Malkin is at his best when he is feisty and angry... or maybe his mom sent him so cook made borscht! hahaha! Seriously... they need Geno to play the right if they wanna win another cup, he is still the second important piece of that puzzle!
Have a good one, from Quebec city! ^^
Jason Mackey
2:16
Glad reading the PG has helped you, and we very much appreciate it. I agree with you that Malkin generally plays his best when he's emotionally engaged the way he was last night.

How do the Pens view Johnson? Are they happy with his play and do they think hes deserving of his contract?
Jason Mackey
2:16
They're happy enough with what he's done that they're not griping about the contract. Which is the opposite of how their fan base views the whole thing.
Gordo
2:17
Mackey what's you opinion of Dominik Simon?  Does he warrant the ice time on the first line with Crosby? Could he be a trade chip that Rutherford includes to sweeten a deal?  I think reuniting Crosby-Guentzel-Rust should happen sooner rather than later.
Jason Mackey
2:17
Disagree on the last part, Gordo. I liked Rust with Malkin and Phil last night. I'm fine with Simon ... for now. In the playoffs, I'd prefer Hornqvist there, and I might prefer Hornqvist there right now. I also might revisit Brassard on the wing because he seems to like it so much, moving Guentzel over to the left side.

Once Schultz returns, if JJ and Petterson can’t regain the form they had initially, who sits first (even if for a game)?
Jason Mackey
2:18
Probably Pettersson, honestly.

Jason, can you expand more on why you think shots that ring off the post should count as a shot on goal?  I've always taken the NHL view that if it hits the post and bounces off, it wouldn't have gone in anyway, so it's not a shot on goal.  After all, how would a shot hitting the post be much different than a shot by a CM?  Neither would have gone in.
Jason Mackey
2:18
My complain with it is actually more literal/linguistic. It is a shot ON goal. It hit the [darn] goal. That's it.

Given a quiet moment, JR might want that Hagelin trade back no Jason?
Jason Mackey
2:19
I don't think so. At the time, they had to do something, and Hagelin was on an expiring deal. I think questioning that is truly hindsight being 20/20.

Can you comment on the extra things that Jamie O. will miss in Dallas that the Pens do well?  For example, we found that Dallas doesn't have an app for us to follow him.
Jason Mackey
2:20
Few teams are as serious about spoiling their players as the Penguins. They are beyond first class. However, don't assume Oleksiak will miss a whole bunch. Dude probably wants to play, and that wasn't happening here. He's probably thrilled to go to an environment where he knows he's going to play an impactful role.

Hi Jason!  Hey, if JR packaged Brassard and Jarry together, isn't that a decent package to bring a solid player in return?
Jason Mackey
2:20
Yes, it is. Not Connor McDavid, mind you, but they do well enough with those two, I would think.

Hope Pens watched Tampa power play.  Could learn a lot. Think it would be better to have a shooter where Phil is and Phil on the point instead of Geno?
Jason Mackey
2:21
No, I don't. I think the Penguins power play is fine the way it is. I think trying to break it up is unnecessarily reactionary. Just chill. They're fine. Other teams would kill to have their problems.
