Thought your point on JR overcoming and fixing his errors also to be spot on.  Can he pull a Scuderi for Daley out of the hat with Jack Johnson ?  I think for now and the future he has to.
Jason Mackey
1:51
HIs belief was that, if things got back later on Jack's contract, he could. I don't think anybody expected that to be a possibility now. As such, no, I don't think there's much they can do right now. Who would take that contract at this point? I think you need to find a way to get more out of him.

So how long do you expect it to take for GMJR to admit another mistake and move/buyout Johnson?
Jason Mackey
1:52
I don't think it's going to happen soon. Both options you suggested would be really hard. Doesn't help Jack's stock, either, for Jim to crush him publicly, right?

Are the Pens waiting for Schultz to come back before making a move on D? Is an upgrade something they are looking for do they just want more effort from everyone?
Jason Mackey
1:52
If they do something on D, it would only be a Mark Streit-type move. Minor. For depth.

Isn't a defenseman their biggest need right now, especially given the way Johnson and Petterson have been playing lately?  I know Shultz is coming back, but I think the defense still won't be good enough.
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think they have capable guys. Johnson and Pettersson were good for a while. I don't think they suddenly forgot how to play hockey. And the team as a whole has also been not great.

Does Sullivan have the authority to bench someone like Johnson without Rutherford's approval (or at least consent)?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Yes. Sullivan has a lot of say. Not total autonomy, mind you, but Rutherford will absolutely listen to his input.

You mentioned the team wanting someone who can play PK. What do you make of Khaira on EDM? Big body, can kill penalties, is still young, good depth guy? Might be a decent depth add if EDM wants changes.
Jason Mackey
1:54
I think they'd be looking for someone with a little more mileage on the tires.

Blueger and Wilson have been playing really well on the fourth line.  Simon has not been doing well lately. Maybe he is the odd man out when all healthy?
Jason Mackey
1:54
He could be. I don't think he has a spot guaranteed by any stretch. He needs to be more consistent.

Do you think Pearson will bounce back and he was just having a few off day?
Jason Mackey
1:55
I do think he'll bounce back. I think there's a bunch of concern over him, and rightfully so, but I do think there's something there. They just need to bring it out.

What names have the Penguins been asking about in the trade market?
Jason Mackey
1:55
Don't have a ton for you right now, sorry. They've checked on Ferland. Believe Zucc, too. But GMJR checks on a lot of guys. He's very active that way.

true or false: Pens biggest weaknesses as we head down the stretch: consistency of effort; too reliant on PP; consistency of goaltending (have been some truly great stretches, but also some sub-par, and injuries can’t be ignored)
Jason Mackey
1:56
Their biggest issue, in my opinion -- I don't completely understand your question -- has been consistency night to night. Too many times they've gotten outworked. Teams with a legitimate chance of winning a Cup don't let that happen.
1:56
Do you think Schultz returns sometime during this road trip?
Jason Mackey
1:56
Yes, I do.

Lately it’s been Brassard that had a hard time fitting in here. In the past Iginla couldn’t get out of town fast enough and mentioned feeling like walking on eggshells   Hossa was gone as soon as he could be.  Is there something to veteran players ( other than kessel who is a different cat ) with earned egos fitting into that locker room ?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Yeah, I think it's a tough room to crack. Not because they're bad people, but there are only so many meaningful roles to go around. And a lot of times guys might have trouble -- as Brassard did -- adjusting to less of one.

Do you think moving Jarry would be a mistake with how Murray has played and injury history?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Yes, I do. I'd keep Jarry at this point.
Team PM

With Murray suffering from another injury yet again and the number of concussions he has had, is it time the Pens start considering that Murray may not be able to continue being their starting goalie.  Be it bad luck or the wear and tear of the game of hockey, Murray is injury prone.  My question is no indictment of Murray's play.
Jason Mackey
1:58
I think they need to be aware of it, but I don't think they're going to not consider him their No. 1. They just need to make sure they have someone who can play in his absence.
JC

Hey Jason hope you are well and as always thank you for always doing this! Is there any truth or anymore interest heard the pens were interested in Namestikov and Zuccarello? I personally like namestikov he is cheaper tons of speed can finish decently. Your your thoughts sir? Here is the link
Jason Mackey
1:58
Said this before, but I don't think I'd read too much into Jim expressing interest in guys, especially talented ones like that. He checks on a lot of players.
Nick
1:58
Hi Jason, is there any AHL defencemen that pens fans should know about that could come up sooner rather than later?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Prow is their best, but I wouldn't look for him to come up this season, unless they endure a slew of injuries.
Will
1:59
Jason, let’s be honest, too many bad nights, too many long stretches where opposition dominates, too many long stretches of nothing on offense, goalie is good but gives up too many soft goals, unreliable third D pairing.... don’t think a long layoff run is in store.
Jason Mackey
1:59
I think there's still a lot of hockey to be played, Will. There's time to fix it.

I’m concerned about Murray not only now but in the future. Does the organization still view him as our goalie for the next decade?
Jason Mackey
2:00
They do. But they also aren't stupid. They know he's had a tough time staying healthy.

In regards to earlier reader asking for prediction on tonight, I have one   Florida 4-2. Brassard and shaehan both get on score sheet   Cullen dies of natural causes during the second period.  Thoughts ?
Jason Mackey
2:00
I think the Penguins win, 4-2. Brassard scores, and Cullen makes it through OK.

What beach will you visit during this road trip?  I hear Ft. Lauderdale is the spot to be.
Jason Mackey
2:00
No beaches for me, unfortunately. Too much work to do.
