Don't wanna get all philosophical here, but nothing is ever really the same. It's always changing.

Men love him, women love him, kids love him. Why don't you love Mark Madden?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I do like Mark. He's a friend.

you need to get off the Fan, it's 2nd rate all the way

I love those guys, and I disagree. They do a great job. And did you really just log into this chat to say something insulting about a radio station?

What's going on with the Baby Pens?  Could they move from WBS, or could the Penguins have a different farm team next season?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Man, why is this such a hot topic today? Did I miss something/

The Pens can't turn into the Blackhawks or Kings...can they?
Jason Mackey
1:49
No.

One of the things I’ve noticed throughout the year are the amount of coaches that aren’t hesitant to put young players in the lineup....and actually play them. Do you think MS will change his philosophy next year and trust them ? Also do you anticipate any staff changes ?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I could see a staff change or two. Wouldn't be surprised is someone wants Jacques Martin for a head coaching job, but I don't think they're going to look to fire guys. ... As for trusting young players, I think Sullivan will play Blueger, but other than that, the Penguins don't have a ton of young guys to trust for next season.

I feel like March lead to a tumble for the Pens. How and where did things go awry?
Jason Mackey

*Led ... If you're gonna troll my stories, at least do it right.

Hi Jason, GMJR said he wonders "if too many players on this roster have become too content" GMJR traded Hagelin last fall to give this team a so called "wake up call." It didn't look like the players received the message during the days & weeks that followed based on how they played. If your Sully & GMJR what do you do besides trading popular locker room players away to make sure your players don't become too content next year? You can't trade everyone.
Jason Mackey
1:53
They actually did respond to the Hagelin trade; they went 16-6-3 in the next 25. I think if you trade the right guy(s) it'll get players' attention. Someone like Phil will do the trick. They like him, but his game doesn't exactly scream effort. I would imagine -- as I've been saying -- that a defensemen is also likely to go for cap reasons.

Do you think losing Rick Tocchet as a coach has hurt this team?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Yes. Because he was and remains a very good and well-liked coach. But I don't think they're 1-2 in playoff series because Tocchet left.

GMJR has made a move or two where you can say it backfired on him based upon emotion (Hagelin). Should we be concerned that GMJR makes moves this summer out of emotion and anger? And what if there's not much of a market for 81 & 72? You can't make a move to make a move.
Jason Mackey
1:55
I don't think the Hagelin move was "emotion." I think it was more trying to get his team's attention -- I do believe they're different -- and it actually worked some (see above). I don't see this summer being about emotion. They just got hammered by the Islanders. If they have that happen and do nothing, that's equally as dumb.

So funny thing here. Derick brassard is still in the playoffs and we’re out...
Jason Mackey
1:56
I noticed that. Kinda wild. Ian Cole, too. Can't say it's for anything Brassard has done especially well, though.

Kris Letang's comments about not changing his game seems to contradict Mike Sullivan's comment about not being high risk and playing disciplined. How does the team reconcile these seemingly contradictory views?
Jason Mackey
1:57
I don't know, honestly. I don't think they know. My best guess is this: You need to sit Letang down and talk to him about what you want. It isn't changing his entire game but about picking his spots better. I think Letang would be OK. He would have to be, or else you move him.

Who are you rooting for in the playoffs now that the Pgh hockey club consisting of flightless birds are done?
Jason Mackey
1:57
I'm all in on Columbus. And Carolina to beat Washington.
Joe
1:58
Who do you believe is likely to go this off season.
Jason Mackey
1:58
I think Kessel and a defenseman, likely Maatta.

Jason, it was reported by another media outlet in town that there was a sense of entitlement and arrogance that has seeped into the locker room since going back to back. Even amongst the teams support staff. Have you picked up on this and if you have which players do you think have become entitled?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Please link the report, but honestly, that's pretty much what Rutherford said on the record yesterday. Some of these guys have gotten too comfortable.

Hockey coaches have a short shelf life. How difficult is it for Sully to go to guys and have them change things that have worked so well in the past?
Jason Mackey
1:59
He could start by showing them tape of the Islanders series and how things are gonna go if they do their things their own way.

Hi Jason, Some of our core  players rely on training camp alone to prepare for the season. That is not nearly enough considering their age.Malkin spend all summer on Instagram then" I had a bad season" .Kessel plays poker every other night then cannot score on empty net anymore. They cannot rely on pure talent anymore .Can the organization do something about it after all they get paid millions of dollars?
Jason Mackey
2:01
Do you really think, in 2019, that these guys don't train? They train year round. Malkin started skating earlier this summer than he ever has in his career. They didn't get beat because they weren't in shape. They got beat because they refused to change. That has nothing to do with the offseason.

Everyone wants to have change but no one wants to get rid of a big name player
Jason Mackey

Fair point. Gotta give to get.
GSMP

I think the Penguins should field offers for Malkin. He's 32 and his production was down both in the regular season and the playoffs. His value will likely continue to drop. Acquiring younger talent and freeing up cap space would be worth it.
Jason Mackey
2:02
I disagree. I think it sends the wrong message. He deserves to have a bad season and not get shipped out of town for it.
What gives?
2:02
I get that in this day and age that athletes are more entitled and call the shots due to salary....but what are we to make of Letang vowing not to alter his high-risk style of play?   He was brutal in the NYI series and 2 of his gaffs directly led to defeat...and this was after a couple yr history of bad decisions.  What recourse does a coach have?  Bench him and stars don’t get the puck on breakout.  Allow this to continue and it serves to demoralize.  There must be Buy-in or trade,
Jason Mackey
2:02
I agree with you, one. But I think Letang took my question more to mean his overall game. I think what the Penguins are going to want him to do is change his game during select times, to pick his spots better. We don't know whether he's willing to do that or not.

Seeing a lot of players in Sid and Geno’s “generation” seemingly not able to keep up with the game anymore (ie James Neal being a healthy scratch tonight, Marc Edward Valsic being a dead weight for SJ) I know Sid and Geno are generational talents but at what point do the Pens have to stop and reanalyze who they are building the team around ? Not saying they should get rid of them bc that’s insane but to avoid a Kings and Blackhawks situation it seems like the Pens need to stop holding on to what’s worked in the past.
