I hear what you're saying, but I think you can also do it by providing the right complimentary pieces. Also, we're suddenly lumping Sid in with this line of thinking because he had four bad playoff games. Before it, he had 100 points and one of the best two-way seasons of his career. Don't let recency cloud your way. But the both of them could use some help, that's for sure.

Two part question: How much input does the team have if a player wants to go play at Worlds? From SM it looks like Geno might go?
Jason Mackey
2:05
Please link the report. Assuming you mean Slava Malamud? Have not seen anything to that effect. It's usually cooperative and not contentious. If the player wants to play, he's usually allowed.

Disappointing season, should the fans still have faith in the GM 's decisions on trades? Maybe it was a bad time to ask but Phil and Kris seemed not to really care about the losses. Did you get that feeling?
Jason Mackey
2:06
No, I don't. I think they absolutely cared. I think Letang cares a lot, especially, getting pretty pissed off during his scrum yesterday. And yeah, I would have faith in Jim's trades. He brought in McCann, Bjugstad, Pettersson and Gudbranson. Those didn't suck.

2: Did we get any feedback about how healthy Geno actually is?
Jason Mackey
2:07
We did not. He didn't talk yesterday.

Are the players still listening to Sullivan? watching it on TV it seemed really easy to see what was going on strategy wise, why couldn't the manager communicate with the players?

I just got done with the footage on the tape, must've thrown up everything i ever ate
Jason Mackey

Don't eat before you re-watch the playoff series.

Also you wrote this is the last chat of the year? did you mean season and you will have them again once September gets here?
Jason Mackey
2:10
I'll have one around the draft or if any news breaks.
What gives?
2:11
What should we do in regards to Letang vow not to change style of play.  His decision making and high risk plays directly led to 2 defeats in NYI series and this after a few yrs of rumbles concerning this.  Do we trade at low value and risk D not getting pucks to stars early and quickly on breakouts, or continue to witness this and see how it demoralizes and empowers others into similar play?  You would think respect for coach would necessitate adherence, but maybe not in entitled-Star-athlete era.
Jason Mackey
2:11
I think they need to have a talk with Letang -- not about changing his entire game but about picking his spots better. My hope would be that he responds to this because he wants to win.

Maybe I missed it, but did anyone ever ask Sullivan why Jack Johnson, who dressed for all 82 games, was a scratch for Game 1?  If yes, did we get an answer besides dressing the best roster we feel could win the game?  Or did we phone Columbus and ask them why we sat him?  Not saying the decision was right or wrong, but it sure looked odd that a guy plays all 82 games and suddenly becomes a healthy scratch.
Jason Mackey
2:12
He was asked about the game and didn't answer the question. He just said it was a tough decision, which I'm sure it was.

Hey Jason, appreciated your coverage all year. Any more insight on why Hagelin got away like he did? How does a GM not know the roster rules? I think he would have been a significant factor vs. the Islanders. Are there any others that might be available next year who play like he does? Go Pens!!
Jason Mackey
2:13
Thanks, Carl. It is a little confounding that they did not know. Honestly, I didn't know, but I'm not a GM/assistant GM for a hockey team. I also think the Penguins never in a million years thought they'd have a chance to get Hagelin back. But saying he would've been the X-factor against the Islanders or something like that, I have to disagree there.

Hello Jason!!! Just a couple questions. Do you believe Rutherford will be on the hot seat with Guerin being highly coveted if he makes the wrong off season moves with trades and or free agents? Also, if a trade were to happen of kessel or LeTang could we see it at the draft? One more what players will be free agents that the pens can covet this year with speed?
Jason Mackey
2:19
Hi Mike. I don't see Jim being on the hot seat, and when he does step down, I'm not sure it would be Guerin replacing him. Yes, the draft would be likely for Phil. I don't think it would be for Letang, and I don't think they would want to move Letang. Next year? Micheal Ferland still interests me. Maybe Ryan Dzingel. Zucc from the Rangers would be appealing, too.

We believe it is time to explore trading Malkin.  He was a -25 this season and clearly looks to be on the decline.  It may sting, but if the pens can get some younger speedier players in return and lose that 9 million plus in salary, then it makes sense.  Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:21
I disagree. I think the message is too reactionary.

From what GMJR said he doesn’t seem to get that there is a speed problem with this team, specifically the D, I know it’s possible he’s putting up a front in front of the press but at what point would Morehouse or Mario step in?
Jason Mackey
2:21
I don't think we're there yet. They still made the playoffs. I think Jim is a little emotional because this is still fresh. I don't think it's anything more than that, and I can't say I blame him.

Do the pens still have confidence in Murray?  He let in some soft goals in the playoffs while not being screened.  Those 2 goals he got beat short side twice in a game is unbelievable!  Hug the posts like they teach in youth hockey!!!!
Jason Mackey
2:22
Yes, they have confidence in him. He was their best player down the stretch, and he'll likely get an extension this summer.

2:22
Any chance the pens look TK being back Hagelin for a 2-year deal?  They need the speed.
Jason Mackey
2:22
I don't think so. He'll make too much, and they want to get younger.

Over/under on Phil coming back?
Jason Mackey
2:23
I don't know how to put an over/under on anything, but it's unlikely he's coming back.

Is Maata all but gone?
Jason Mackey
2:23
Would imagine so. If someone wants Jack, maybe Olli stays. I don't see that happening.

Do you think there might be a shakeup in the coaching staff?
Jason Mackey
2:24
Only if Jacques Martin leaves for a head coaching gig.

Your thoughts on new blood within the GM position?  Obviously some player movement is needed. I believe in Coach Sullivan still.  Where are you at in all of this understanding that the wounds are still fresh???
Jason Mackey
2:24
Rutherford isn't going anywhere, if that's what you're asking.
BIG Deal RD
2:24
Is it time to cut bait w Murray?  I understand the business decison due to his youth of keeping him over Fleury, but he hasn't been right since Fleury left.  Hopefully the pens don't sign him to a long term deal this summer.  Make him earn it and play well for an entire season and the subsequent playoffs.
Jason Mackey
2:25
He's their franchise guy and played extremely well down the stretch. You don't make the guy who helped win two Cups go into a contract year without a contract, when an injury could change so much. They'll extend him. He deserves it, too.
