Why do hockey coaches not last long? They seems to just go to another team. Other sports aren’t that way as much.
Jason Mackey
3:04
Because hockey players will just stop listening. Or that's the perception. And the NHL notoriously has a very quick hook with its coaches. It's crazy.

I think making the playoffs is going to be tough next year .  Metro is getting tougher and pens getting older
Jason Mackey
3:04
Agree with that. It's a very good division.

From reading a few recent articles on the Pens, it seems like Sullivan and Rutherford are not on the same page as far as team make up.   Sullivan wants speed and puck movers  across the board. Rutherford favors bigger more physical - albeit slower - defense man.  Is is this true or am I misinterpreting what I read?
Jason Mackey
3:05
I think you're mis-interpreting. I think they both want puck-movers on defense. I think their may be a problem admitting that they don't have that. And in the past I think they had some differences in opinion. They sound pretty united, though, in being pissed about the Islanders series loss.

How is Sid's 100 point season impressive enough to build around but Phil's 82 point season says he needs to be traded? I don't understand.
Jason Mackey
3:06
It's not trading based on who played well and who didn't. There are a bunch more factors. Like being the captain for one, and also when that contract runs out, whether you would sign someone again, marketability to other teams, attitude, a bunch of stuff.

So who’s winning the cup now that Tampa (incredibly shocking) and the pens are out? I’m going with Colorado.
Jason Mackey
3:06
I had Tampa and the Penguins making it to the second round. Not sure you wanna listen to me right now.

I am shocked no Selke nom for Crosby .  What does he have to do ?  Strap on the goalie pads ??
Jason Mackey
3:06
Just a guess, but I think that might put him in another category.

JR sounded defensive and completely arrogant in his press conference. Sid, Geno etc didn’t turn into different people and stop caring about winning Cups. Players weren’t playing too content, they just didn’t have the help they needed on the ice to execute sufficiently within the current way Sullivan wants them to play in order to beat the Isles. They knew they were outmanned and I think Sid alluded to that. That Sullivan and JR got up there and minimized their role in making this team a non-contender was really outrageous. Do you see it the same way?
Jason Mackey
3:08
I don't. I see what GMJR was saying. He wants more from the players he named. Based on what they make, they should be giving more. I didn't have any issue with what Jim said, other than him saying this is the best blue line he's had since he's been here.

Regarding Geno joining team Russia at worlds. SM = social media. His wife posted a message that seemed to indicate he was joking team Russia
Jason Mackey

I saw that. I have seen nothing official, though.

Zucc plays for Dallas now.
Jason Mackey

Sorry. Thanks for that.

What does Recchi do and why don’t they get rid of him and hire someone who can help Sullivan with the offensive strategy and craft a better PP?
Jason Mackey
3:09
They might, although I think it would be reactionary to make Recchi the fall guy here. Recchi works with a lot of the young guys, handles pre-scouts and coach the forwards.

The Pens D can’t get the puck out of their own end consistently and transition through the NZ quickly. Why is JR doubling down on this D as being the best he’s had? It’s clear JJ-Schultz pairing was atrocious
Jason Mackey
3:09
It could have been better, for sure. As I've said here, I don't understand it, either.

Did Maatta being a healthy scratch decrease his value? What do you think the return could be for him?
Jason Mackey
3:10
Not too much, I wouldn't think. Hard to tell on return, but the guy helped win two Cups, has a great attitude and is still extremely young. Have to imagine an acquiring team would want that.

Anyone else think Phil kessel is overrated?
Jason Mackey
3:10
I think Phil is a tremendous player. And hilarious. But I don't think he's the right player for where the Penguins are at right now.

A site that doesn't staff practices or games to get quotes themselves -- or pay to be on the road or talk to people on and off the record -- but instead just steals the work of others? Nah, didn't read it.

Why not trade Hornqvist instead of Phil if they're trying to get cap space. Hornqvisy
Jason Mackey
3:13
Because I think Phil is probably a lot more tradable, and I think they actually need Hornqvist's work ethic and fire.

From what you've said above re who's likely to be gone, is it correct to say you believe Johnson and Gudbranson both will be in the opening day lineup?
Jason Mackey
3:13
I think Gudbranson will be. I think Johnson will be on the team. Don't know if he'll be in the lineup or not.
Jumbo
3:13
Do you think the pens will go after any big named players?
Jason Mackey
3:14
They'll go after guys you've heard of before, I can say that. I don't think they're going to trade for McDavid or anything like that.
Dan
3:14
Maybe a number 2 pick from Coyotes is about al they could get for Phil...something along those lines
Jason Mackey
3:14
I think you might be shooting a little high there, Dan.
Todd
3:14
Why are you so defiant about trading Phil? He has a NTC  and can only be traded to 1 of 8 teams, severely limiting the return. Meanwhile Hornqvist who somehow gets a pass from everybody  has an 8 team no trade, so in theory he could be traded to 1 of 22 other teams and in theory fetch a greater return. Not to mention Hornqvist is toast and has all the #grit/60 that the "hockey men" love.
Jason Mackey
3:15
I love Hornqvist as a player, but he's 32 and had three goals in his final 39 games after his fifth concussion since December 2014. Who in their right mind is gonna take that?

Jason, to my earlier question about which players have become too comfortable reported by another outlet here is the link. Which players do you think DK is referring to towards the bottom?https://www.dkpittsburghsports.com/2019/04/18/penguins-islanders-game-...
Jason Mackey

I don't have a subscription to Dejan's site, so I can't read that. But I would imagine he's referring to Letang, Kessel and Malkin, in some form or fashion.
