What do you think the Pens will get for Kessel that makes it worth losing a .9ppg player?
Jason Mackey
3:21
Salary-cap space and the opportunity to open-up a top-six right-wing spot for Hornqvist. You'd also hope someone who adds a little bit more of a two-way game.

What happened to Riikola? He was sent to WBS then kinda disappeared.
Jason Mackey
3:21
He did well down there. Saw him yesterday. I'm expecting him to compete for time with the NHL club next season.
Jim Rutherford
3:21
Is Maata is disappointment or is it just a numbers thing?
Jason Mackey
3:21
Just a numbers thing. And having a movable contract.
Josh
3:22
You seriously think we should trade Kessel for a loss if it means cap space to sign players that won't score as much as he did? C'mon Jason.
Jason Mackey
3:22
He scored 27 goals while playing basically no defense and going through an extended slump. With $6.8 million, I would think they could get that and more.
Josh
3:23
Phil is a goofy, great personality, that keeps things loose. His own teammates have said repeatedly that he is. So yes, they have one. And you want him traded off.
Jason Mackey
3:23
I don't "want" anything. I'm telling you what's most likely to happen from the front office. But you should also know I think they're going to try. It's not gonna be easy.

Jason do you see the Pens bringing in any size and grit?
Jason Mackey
3:24
I do. I think they'd like to become tougher to play against, and part of it will involve those two things. But they also need to get faster. Tricky combination.

With the way Rutherford is trashing his team publicly , do you think free agents will want to come here?
Jason Mackey
3:24
Yes. A team that spends every available dollar? Of course they would. He doesn't say anything he doesn't say to them first.

Coach Sullivan talked about being accountable and playing the right way all year. That happened for small stretches but was not nearly consistent enough and it cost them in the end. Even last year had some similar problems. How will Sullivan be able to fix this next year if he hasn’t been able to do it with any consistency in a year or more?
Jason Mackey
3:25
Maybe he could get a little tighter with guys' ice time and hit them that way. I would also think he'd have players' attention after the four-game flameout.

How bout some 20/20 foresight. Best guess where Phil is playing next year?
Jason Mackey
3:25
Arizona or Florida.
Chris

Hi Jason! I am one fan who is already looking forward to next season. The last few days the media and the Pens management have been talking about changes. Since you cover them for the post gazette what changes do you see?
Jason Mackey
3:26
I see them trading a couple guys to free up cap space. I think they'll re-sign Murray, and I think Phil and Maatta are the most likely to go.

If we’re not signing or getting back a 60+ point player for Phil, then JR trading him has just made the team worse. Why doesn’t he trade actual bad players on the team?
Jason Mackey
3:27
He would be getting back someone who score 60 points, but he wouldn't be trading for them. He would be using the cap space to sign them as a UFA.

Will Hagelin be one of the three Hart Trophy finalists?  Given the # of questions about him, seems he should be?
Jason Mackey
3:27
No kidding. What's up with that?
Chris
3:27
What do you think of the young talent ‘’ Jordy B, Sam Miletic, Addison? And is there a chance we’ll get to see them in the near future?
Jason Mackey
3:28
Like all of them, especially Addison. Really skilled defenseman. I think they'll still a year or more away, though.

How fed up are the Pens with letang’s decision making?
Jason Mackey
3:28
They're pretty agitated. But it's just about taking unnecessary risks. They know he can be a tremendous player.

Jason, why do you think so many fans think draft choices are the answer or are so valuable?   Outside of the top five picks, which happily the Pens never have, what superstars have emerged from there in the last few years?   It’s not the NFL
Jason Mackey
3:29
I agree. I'm fine with handling draft picks the way the Penguins do; they're not overly attached. I would rather deal with known commodities. Unless, of course, you're picking really, really high.

I don’t understand why Phil, Geno and Letang are seen as “too comfortable” during the Isles series...those guys are competitive and want to win.  Yes, some or all made some mistakes, but to suggest they aren’t trying is outrageous. Geno had the most points in the series, Phil looked good. In fact, Sid played the worst of those three against the Isles. Don’t you think it’s really lazy to indict those players for not trying hard? They may be not have been executing well, but give credit to the Isles. I didn’t see a lack of caring at all
Jason Mackey

I think you need to think about more than just the Islanders series. Think about the whole season. The past two seasons. How things have been trending for the Penguins. Who brings what. Who's part of an inclusive atmosphere, that sort of thing. I think it's a little harsh, too, but I'm cautioning that Jim isn't speaking just about the playoffs.

Who do you think comes up next season? Prow, Rikkola?
Jason Mackey
3:31
Maybe. If they can find a taker for Jack Johnson.
Ron J
3:31
How did We get swept my a mediocre goaltender ?
Jason Mackey
3:31
It's more than just Lehner. They couldn't do anything to penetrate the Islanders structure. And every time the Penguins did score, the Islanders had a response.
Parkman

Do you think the pens would entertain the thought of trading Geno, if so he would be the one guy on team with the highest return, I don’t want to see Geno go anywhere it was just a thought if they wanted to get a huge return to help get younger and faster?
Jason Mackey
3:31
I don't think they would go there. Sends the wrong message.
3:32
OK, folks. Thanks so much. Long chat today but a fun one. Also thanks for joining these all season. It's a good time. We're gonna be off for a few weeks, I think. I'll tweet when we're having the next one, probably around the draft.
