Gets more in a trade.... Phil or Matta
Jason Mackey
1:43
Would think Phil, although it might be close.
Cameron
1:43
Who’s the most likely player with over 5m cap hit to move? What would you expect return to be ?
Jason Mackey
1:43
Kessel. Maybe a couple of draft picks. No first or anything splashy.
Ty
1:43
If Kessel approved a trade to Arizona and the Pens were going to send him there, what would you want in return, Jason?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Whatever got the deal done. As I've said, I wouldn't get hung up on return. I'd try to get a sense for what Arizona was willing to pay, maybe try to up it a time or two, then simply get the deal done.

The invincible, colossal, stupendous unbeatable Islanders are down 3-0....we are a worse team than we thought. No playoffs next year ot at best 8 seed and 1 and done.
Jason Mackey
1:44
You think they should play the games or just cancel 'em since we already know?
Jeff H
1:44
73 MUST GO . 3 will go bc he has trade value - think Lehkonen + 3rd rdr. 72 could go too if the value back is worth it.   81 will go and ppl will be surprised that a point per gm guy has value ???? Think Fiala type winger, a #3-5 LHDman, & 2nd &3rd rd picks.  I just think its time to go young legs and build around 87-71-58. What do u think JM?
Jason Mackey
1:45
If they trade Jack Johnson, I would think winning the Stanley Cup would only be the start. Next would have to be solving world hunger, eradicating homelessness, who knows? The possibilities are endless.
1:46
Seriously, yes. I agree with most of what you said -- except for the eagerness to move Jack. In all likelihood, it won't happen. But I would move Phil and Olli and try to get an injection of some youth on the wing.

Hey Jason!  Something I have been meaning to ask your thoughts on. When it comes to the term 'fast team' who actually makes the determination other than the naked eye test?  Basically how do you define a fast team and how are they measured?  Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:47
It's basically an eye test, although next year, with puck-tracking technology, the hope should be to time how quickly teams are able to get the puck out of their own zone, on average. Once that data is available, truly measuring speed should be easier.

Is Matt Cullen likely to be coming back?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I'm not expecting Cullen back.
Ty
1:47
Why hasn't anyone discussed having Jarry as trade bait? Is he going to waste away in WBS since they just signed DeSmith?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Because he had a mediocre year in the AHL. They have him, but Jarry isn't going to carry a deal by himself. He's a sweetener at this point.

With the success Carolina has had against the Islanders, do you think it changes the analysis of Pens series with Islanders?  Seems to me that Carolina’s success suggests Pens loss was more about intangibles than scheme, speed, etc.
Jason Mackey
1:49
I don't know. I don't ascribe Carolina's willingness to play a patient, smart game to the Penguins having more issues than we originally thought. I think the Hurricanes have been willing to play a style the Penguins, for whatever reason, were not.
Cameron
1:49
Also - do you expect Wilson to resign either as a 4th liner, WBS’s captain again, or to look for work elsewhere?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I think he'll look for work elsewhere. If he doesn't find it, I think the Penguins would be interested in bringing him back as an AHL player. But I think they realized he was probably in over his head being counted upon as an NHL regular.

Jason, love the Pens chats.  How does this team become younger and tougher to play against if you have Kessel, Malkin and Letang on your roster? Granted they won’t move all 3 let alone 2 of these bigger offenders but please this team needs an infusion of better two way players.
Jason Mackey
1:52
I think they can be extremely difficult to play against if Malkin and Letang play the way they're capable. If Malkin opens 2019-20 the way he closed 2017-18, they're golden. Letang had a terrific 2018-19 regular season before struggling in the playoffs. There's some recent precedent of them playing terrific hockey; I wouldn't say it's impossible. ... They do need better two-way play, I'll agree there. But I don't think you can confine that criticism to two guys.

What is the market for Phil and Olli? Have you heard of any teams that have inquired?
Jason Mackey
1:52
It's too early for that sort of stuff to come out.
Casey
1:52
Jason, all of Rutherford's moves indicate he wants to get away from the small-and-fast model to a heavier game. Could that be at the core of the issues with the team? The leaders might say the right things, but there must be at least some residual resentment from the players that the GM is essentially forcing them to change a winning style that, I'm guessing, everyone loved to play.
Jason Mackey
1:53
I don't think that's the case. You're basically saying that they're not trying because they're pouting over Jim's moves. I can't get on board with that. I think they might have worse players, and some of their best players have failed to produce. But they're not sacrificing their own careers because they're mad at the GM.

Who would be possible candidates for a Phil trade? I've heard Arizona and Nashville.  I know Toronto is paying some salary...would the Penguins be allowed as a 2nd team to cover salary if needed?
Jason Mackey
1:54
The salary isn't an issue, and yeah, I would think Arizona and Nashville would be two teams who might have interest. Florida, too. Phil lives down there in the offseason. Low-pressure. They're about to spend some money. Phil might make sense given their strong centers and lack of scoring wings.

I understand the season ended very badly, but.. this idea of trading Letang is crazy to me. There are many times that he seems like the most talented and gifted player on the ice, he can do so many things, why give that up? We've put up with the bad parts of Geno's game for a decade, why not Letang? If you were told you had to give up one of them, who would you give up? I would keep Letang.
Jason Mackey
1:55
It would depend on return. I don't think you can make it that black or white, nor do I think it's smart to do that. I agree with you on Letang, though. When he's right, man, he's so absurdly good. And it was a bad playoff, yes. So what? Was he alone? Heck no. The concern for me is more Letang refusing to buy into a more structured approach, which I think the Penguins need to do. If anyone is unwilling to do that, I think they have some problems.

1:55
Any thoughts on who (or what position) the Penguins will pick in the first round?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I would imagine best player available. They have plenty of room to add premium talent.

Dumo is decent (not great, but decent), and every other defenseman outside of a 22 year old rookie was terrible this year, and somehow people are clamoring to trade Letang??  Yeah, he made a couple of costly mistakes.  That's what happens when you literally have one defenseman capable of skating the puck out of the zone and making a breakout pass to a forward.  Unbelievable.
Jason Mackey
1:57
I think there's some oversimplification here, but I get what you're saying. And it's certainly not all on Letang. Dude does way more harm than good, and they had way more issues than just the defense.

1:57
Do u think Pittsburgh media and fans are just spoiled from the Pens? Bc when one of the best athletes in PGH sports history in Letang, who comes back from a stroke, comes back from a career ending type injury.
Jason Mackey
1:58
How are we, the media, spoiled by the Pens? Do you think we're writing about these potential moves because we're mad at Letang, Malkin and Kessel for losing? Gimme a break. We're writing about them because people in the organization -- the GM included! -- are talking about them.

What are the chances of Jacques Martin being snapped up by either Buffalo or Edmonton as a head coach?  Do you think Gonch will be here full-time next year?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Tough to say on Gonch. Assistants weren't available to us for much of last season, so I can't say I talked to Sergei much. It's a family thing with him, whether he wants to be away for that much time. ... I do think Jacques could go. Ottawa would be my pick there.

Is there an example of another team in the salary cap era who deliberately pushed their best/most talented players out the door in an attempt to shake up the room and actually saw a net short term benefit?  (I.e not a Tavares situation where the player basically held all the cards.)
