Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 05.02.19

There's no example period of a team that has done something that significant in the salary-cap era -- the result good or bad.

If we're talking UFAs, you have to believe Carl Hagelin gets a second look after the fallout of trading him. The PK tanked, the team slowed to a crawl, it threw two lines out of rhythm, and there was a demonstrable change in Patric Hornqvist when he lost his best friend amidst a very trying season. He had a $4 million hit - can he really expect to get a big raise on top of that?
Jason Mackey
2:01
I think he's gonna want a raise, yes. Does he get it? Tough to say. Only takes one. I don't think it makes a bunch of sense for the Penguins to throw gobs of money after Hagelin. Yes, he's fast, but he had, what, five goals? He's already on the wrong side of 30. For that money, they need more youth and finish, IMO.

I really think Rutherford needs to take on more blame for the teams woes for all of his constant trading and he never seems to blame himself for causing some of this mess .
Jason Mackey
2:01
I do think the constant tinkering had an effect on team chemistry.

How come no one has brought up bringing in an emotional support animal for the team? I'd suggest either a Turtle, Cat or by golly, a Penguin itself
Jason Mackey
2:02
If the Penguins had their own emotionally support animal ... and it was a penguin ... oh, boy.

What grade would you give the Pirates so far, Bill ?
Jason Mackey
2:02
I say a B-minus.
Joe

Would an important piece, like a Jared McCann, have to accompany a Kessel or Hornqvist to sweeten the deal?
Jason Mackey
2:02
I don't think there's any way they trade McCann.

Did something in particular happen to cause Malkin to become the “bad seed” ? He’s been find for years. Also the story about the video review incident Malkin isn’t that wrong. They had better defensemen before that could skate it out. Maybe he’s just frustrated with the caliber of talent GMJR is getting for the team.  Personally i feel like they should’ve never traded Ian Cole. Can’t replace that heart.
Jason Mackey
2:04
I agree with you that trading Ian Cole was a move that did not work. I think they've been trying (unsuccessfully) to replace him ever since. I'm not going to comment on the video story. That's Josh's, he heard it, and I don't have the context. Also wouldn't expect the Athletic to criticize any of our work, and I wouldn't do that to them.

How long do you think this nucleus can competitively play at a high level?
Jason Mackey
2:05
For a couple more years, easily. I can also see Rutherford's thought process where he thinks he might try to maximize return now and try to get younger. But I don't look at this core and say it's over. Not by any stretch.

Do you think Sid can get thru to malkin Letang and Kessel to change their ways ?
Jason Mackey
2:06
I don't think that's Sid's job, and I don't think they need to "change their way." They just need to play a little better and more responsibly. Let's not make the mistake of putting the entire season on those three. I feel that's where this is going.

Who will the local hockey team select in the 1st round of the 2019 NHL Draft presented by GoodYear Tires? I want names
Jason Mackey
2:10
Fruitless endeavor to even try at this point, sorry.
Joe
2:10
Why does Madden call you "McK-eye" rather than "Mack-ee?"
Jason Mackey
2:10
Not sure. It involves soccer, I believe. He explained it me once, but I forget. He uses it in real life, too. I'm used to it.
Todd
2:11
So, the Penguins can't move JJ's contract because nobody would want him (your words), but the Penguins are "happy" with his play. Doesn't that tell you that Rutherford is either dumb or blind to be the only GM to covet him?
Jason Mackey
2:12
I don't think so. When Jim signed Jack to a fifth year, I don't think he knew how this past season would go. Also, and I'm sure people are gonna freak out over this, Jack really wasn't the biggest problem the Penguins faced. When everyone played better, we weren't talking about Jack Johnson as much, were we?

I'm an important person so don't you dare disrespect me and not answer my question. Will the Pens win the Stanley Cup next year?
Jason Mackey
2:12
I think we'll have to wait and see.
Subtlety
2:12
Because there is no scenario in which a Malkin trade makes the team better in an immediate sense.
Jason Mackey
2:12
I tend to agree with you.
Jack
2:13
Could Jack Johnson and Maata both be moved. I don’t know if a team would be willing to take on their contracts especially Johnson. I feel like Johnson is like Scuderi, old, can have some good games but slow. Maybe we can trade him for a Trevor Dailey like player.
Jason Mackey
2:13
I don't think the Penguins would be against it, but I don't think it's likely, either. Remember, too, that they don't have a ton of guys in the AHL able to come up. Riikola and ...

Jason - enjoy the chats! How do you think Sid sees the situation? He and Geno seem to have a good relationship, but does Sid see Malkin's performance the same way management does? Where does Sid see the need for improvement?  Did he also tune Sullivan out and is immune to criticism, or was there a piece missing from the team which contributed to his performance in the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
2:15
I'm sure Sid would like to see Malkin stay, but I'm positive he also understands the business aspect of the situation. I also think he would be realistic as to what his bosses are doing right now -- doing their due diligence with everything. Remember that nothing has been determined. They're only critically assessing everything. I think we're kind of losing sight of that.

Given Kessel was the best forward in the playoffs and given how the playoffs are playing out this year shows the regular season doesn’t mean much ,  i would think we need to keep Phil,  he knows when to step it up
Jason Mackey
2:16
I can see that argument. Why I think it makes sense to trade Phil has nothing to do with whether or not he produced in the playoffs. I think you have to do something, and he's a relatively easy something to do. Also, I worry about his game not aging terribly well. And if they want to get back to playing more of a structured, two-way game, Kessel is certainly an easy fix.

Who’s the Veteran player the pens get instead of Cully ?
Jason Mackey
2:16
I don't think they "have" to have one at all time.
Joe
2:16
If they replaced 3 on 3 overtime with...who could pull a baby grand piano from goal line to goal line the fastest, it would be worth it to keep Maatta.
Jason Mackey
2:17
I'm scared to learn what happens after two teams pull the baby grand in the same amount of time.
Mark
2:17
It wasn’t the coaching that lost it was lack of effort and want to
Jason Mackey
2:17
Tend to agree with you, Mark.

If Kessel gets shipped out, do you feel that it will be a James Neal-like return (two lesser players who hypothetically fit the scheme better) or are they looking purely for cap space and draft picks?
