How do you feel about the pens thirds? It seems a lot of people are not impressed, myself included.
Jason Mackey
1:44
Agreed. I thought they were a bit of a dude. Was hoping for the Snoop Dogg ones.

Over the next, say, half a dozen years, how do you think the Penguins will cope with the inevitable decline of their aging top stars, i.e., Crosby, Malkin, Letang? Perhaps trade 1 or 2 for youth? Change playing style to defense first, trapping, etc.?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I think they'll ride out Crosby and Malkin. I really have a tough time seeing them trade either one, to be honest with you. I think they retire Penguins. Yeah, I think they'll have to tweak their style some, but I don't really have any concern about Sidney Crosby not putting in the work. He might play until he's 45, honestly. Malkin works, too, but I could see him wanting to go back to Russia for a year or two before retiring.

Do you think Simon being a positive impact player akin to Hagelin (doesn’t score, but his puck retrieval and movement in the oZone help a lot) will help him earn favor in the eyes of the fans?
Jason Mackey
1:46
I think so. I think Simon will grow on people the more he's used in a bottom-six role. I think people became infuriated with him last year because he kept getting chance after chance in the top-six and not doing much with it.

Hey Jason. I'm always arguing with buddies about this, and wanted your take. Do you think McDavid's taken over as the no.1 best player in the league yet? Sid's still the best all-round in my eyes. Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:47
I'll take Sid any day of the week. Especially when I see how Sid carries himself on and off the ice versus McDavid. I think McDavid plays a certain way, and on a lesser team, that allows him to put up additional points. If you make me pick one or the other, I'm taking Sid 100 times out of 100.

Does hags resign in pittsburgh? even if he doesnt put up a staggering amount of points hes our #1 pk'er. hes also good at giving malkin the puck so he can be malkin. Personally i think he is worth every penny if the pens can keep him
Jason Mackey
1:47
I agree with you, JP, but I think Hagelin might price himself out of Pittsburgh. It's just reality. Guentzel will need paid next year. Maybe Riikola, who knows. I think Hagelin will get a nice chunk of change on the open market and choose to move on.
Question
1:48
Have chats become the place for fans to exchange opinions now that most talk radio shows field very few calls?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Ha. I don't know. But we usually get excellent participation here, I answer every single question, and I hope the audience continues to grow. Love these things.

Malkin has made a couple of really horrible plays in the two games so far.  A terrible giveaway vs WAS that started their comeback and a poor defensive effort on the SH goal they gave up to Montreal.  Instead of sitting Maatta, why not sit Malkin for a game?  Is he untouchable, like Antonio Brown?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Uh, yeah. What do you think the reaction would be if the Penguins sat Evgeni Malkin for Derek Grant?

Absolutely no forecheck in games 1 and 2.  Will that change?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I think you're going to see a much different team tonight all-around. Seems like they've gotten the message.

re: ZAR and two way, they would save money on Grant if they chose to waive him instead. They would save money if they demoted Ruhwedel or Riikola. Cap is buriable up to minimum + 375k, which gives you a buriable salary of 1.025 million this year.
Jason Mackey
1:51
They have no interesting in demoting Ruhwedel or Riikola, and they did send down Grant to allow for Jarry to come up.

do you get the feeling that some exasperation is setting in with the Pens with another Murray injury even though it is not his fault?
Jason Mackey
1:52
I don't know if exasperation is the right word, but I think we're past the point where they can say these injuries are all flukes. And with concussions, no matter whether there's a reason or none whatsoever, three in 30 months and two since February is significant.

What kind of talk do you hear from coaches/personnel/players about Matt Murray?  I would love to see him quiet his critics and vie for the Vezina this year- we all know he's capable (save for some diehard MAFers).
Jason Mackey
1:52
They love him. I think they worry a little bit for his healthy, honestly. But they love how competitive he is, and they think he's going to contend for the Vezina. There's zero concern there, trust me.

Again, thank you for hosting these chats, as a 20 year old college student who follows the penguins religously, its awesome to get to ask you the questions that just stew in our minds. Does Sid win another Art Ross in his career?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Actually, yes, I think he will win another Art Ross. Although I think, for whatever reason, not  many are expecting him to do that. I don't know why that's the case. Just the sense I get.

Read your article about Matt Murray and Buffalo Wild Wings.  What did you order?  When you are conducting an interview, are you allowed to kick back with a brew or an alcoholic beverage?  What are your favorite drinks?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Ha. We each got like a dozen boneless medium wings and split some sort of queso dip thing that he picks. No drinking, although I love me some craft beer when I do. Currently have a Brooklyn sampler that I'm digging.

Jason in your opinion will the Malkin & Kessel line ultimately work out or will they more likely continue to over-pass the puck & force Sullivan to break up that line long term?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Maybe a little bit of both? Ha. I think it'll get broken up eventually for that reason, then probably put back together. For now, though, I think Sullivan wants to ride it out a little longer.

When will we get to see Maatta and Rikola together? Perfect finn. I mean fit.
Jason Mackey
1:55
Could happen. It'll be interesting to see what happens if Riikola plays well. Does Maatta continue to sit? I don't think.

Have any of the other Pens played disc golf with DeSmith yet?  Why aren't they interested?
Jason Mackey
1:55
They haven't. He's tried. They're not interested. He told me he thinks they're scared ... although I'm pretty sure he was joking.

what are the chances the Pens keep Hags past the trade deadline? Or are they aiming to resign him?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I think they'll keep him, and I think they would like to re-sign him. But I think it's going to depend on what he can get on the open market. If they can stay competitive, I think they would certainly like to keep him, but staying competitive won't be easy.

Who gets your vote for best hockey smile on the team?
Jason Mackey
1:56
Haha. Maybe Derek Grant? He's missing three teeth.

Has there ever been any talk about how ridiculously cryptic injury updates are in the NHL?  Are hockey players really that bloodthirsty that they will immediately go for an achilles heel?  I understand not wanting other teams to know who will be in your lineup but it seems ridiculous when other leagues like the NFL are very specific.  What's the deal?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Nah, I think it's more a culture of being worried about that more than people actually doing it. And that concern extended to the highest of league officials, so I don't think it's going to change any time soon. Unfortunately.

How expendable does Juuso Riikola make a defenseman like Olli Maatta? There's no point in trading Maatta unless you have something you can trade Maatta for to improve your team, but if Brassard blows out his knee, or reverts to last years form causing them to need a 3C, or if Sprong and Simon both fail causing them to need a skilled top-9 winger, how likely is it that they move him for depth?
