Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 11.21.18

Doing a little math, with 63 games to go, the Pens need 82 points to get to 100 (and presumably make the playoffs.) That comes out to winning 65% of the possible points. I know it means turning things around quickly, but that is not out of the realm of possibility for this team--that is more their typical points percentage under Sullivan. Given that, and how muddled the Metro is, do you think that is giving management some patience in not making more wholesale changes?
Jason Mackey
2:15
Yeah, I think some patience absolutely is in order. I know it looks bleak at the moment, but the division is a mess; it would be different if they played in the Atlantic.

Friedman just reported on his 31 thoughts that the Penguins wanted to get their hands on Montour from the Ducks, but it didn't work out. He also added that someone who might fit the Pens profile is Silfverberg. He mentioned that entering Saturday's game, 41 of the 46 goals scored game from top 6, suggesting that Silfverberg can be good top 9 addition.

I need to have a talk with Elliotte about holding that stuff until after my weekly chat. Ha. (I'm kidding, by the way. I would never actually do that.)

Jason: What is the personal relationship like between Sid and Geno? Superstars sometimes clash, but I’ve always wondered how those two get along off the ice? Do they hang out, or does each do his own thing?
Jason Mackey
2:18
They don't clash at all. They actually get along very well, and it's fun to see them chat and goof around with each other. ... To be fair, Crosby -- one of the world's nicest humans -- would get along with a wall. But no, they genuinely get along.

In your 20 thoughts this week, you mentioned Maatta’s “five on five shot share of 456.00…” What does that mean? Never heard that stat.
Jason Mackey
2:19
Should be 46.0, first off. Secondly, it's Corsi. A measure of puck possession. The number of shot attempts the Penguins have when Maatta is on the ice five-on-five.

What's Dupuis up to these days?
Jason Mackey
2:20
He's in Montreal being a dad. I've tried to contact him a few times with little luck. But last I heard he was coaching his kids and catching up on a bunch of stuff he's missed. This is something I did last year: http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/penguins/2018/04/03/Penguins-Pascal...

Will we see Blueger at all this season? And if Cullen retires and Sheahan doesn’t come back, will he be a full time member of the team next season?
Jason Mackey
2:20
I would think yes on both of those accounts. I'm surprised Blueger isn't here already, to be honest with you. He deserves a chance.
Norm
2:20
Yea Jason, how about an article on Jeff Jimerson.  We see him every home game and he never disappoints. It would be nice to know a little about him.
Jason Mackey
2:20
That's actually a great idea, Norm. I'm going to dig into that. Maybe talk a little music with him. Thanks.

Hey Jason, are you out of some Pens news match coverage because you have to spent more time with your new babies at home? Your colleague V is good but I like yours better, you're doing such a good job! ^_~
About the Pens team, do you still believe they can still turn this season around for a playoff berth? If yes, what should they do?
Jason Mackey
2:21
Thank you for the kind words. I do appreciate it. We've been managing just fine with the little one. My wife is the real MVP, to be honest. ... I do think they can turn it around. Guys need to start scoring, though, and they need to be a lot more responsible than they have been in several areas. Getting Crosby back will help. Goaltending needs to be better.

What are the chances of a Sprong for Dylan Strome swap? Two struggling players in serious need of scenery changes.
Jason Mackey
2:22
I can't say definitely no, but I have a tough time thinking someone would give up the third overall pick one year for someone who was taken in the second. Seems a bit uneven.

You said "Mike Sullivan is not the problem." Can you please elaborate? Obviously the Pens are low on prospects and players who we can trade, so something needs to shake up. It seems to me like Sullivan has lost the team. Quenville looking like a good option.
Jason Mackey
2:23
Because Mike Sullivan is trying like hell to get this fixed, and he's a very good hockey coach. Is it Sullivan's fault the Penguins bottom-six can't buy a goal or that Matt Murray has struggled? He also didn't hurt Justin Schultz.

Hi Jason - Happy Thanksgiving!
Jason Mackey

Thanks, Kim. Same to you!

What aspect of Riikola's game does he need to work on the most? Thanks!
Jason Mackey
2:24
He needs to work on timing -- how quickly he makes plays on the smaller ice. That has caused him some issues. Basically just adjusting to the North American game.

What are the chances the pens keep Kessel after his deal is up?
Jason Mackey
2:24
Very minimal, I would think. They're probably going to need to put that money elsewhere.

GMJR traded Hagelin to shake up the players in the room.  Might GMJR have hired Craig Patrick to shake up the coach in the room.  Craig had a habit of jumping behind the bench when the situation calls for it.
Jason Mackey
2:25
If GMJR hired Craig Patrick to coach instead of, say, Joel Quenneville, I have a big problem with that, but that's not what he did. I think he hired Craig Patrick as another (smart) set of eyes. Nothing more, nothing less.

Did you ever get a chance to watch Sprong in the AHL? The legend of Sprong has far exceeded anything he has ever shown in the AHL. Do you have any contacts of other team's pro scouts who have an opinion on him?
Jason Mackey
2:25
I did, Steven. And there are definitely warts to his game. But many people around hockey do believe he should be capable of scoring at this level.

Why did the penguins seem to want to push the pace in OT vs Sabres the other night? By pushing speed seemed to lead to a sloppy shift change and an easy goal 3 on 3 for the sabres.
Jason Mackey
2:26
Because they have the talent to do so, honestly. But there's a difference between pushing the pace and being sloppy, and I think that's what you saw against the Sabres.

If the pens miss the playoffs this year how much is this a hit to Sid and Geno’s legacies ?
Jason Mackey
2:26
It depends on what happens after it. If they miss and they use it as a way to reset, nothing. But if they miss and do nothing to fix their problems, then obviously it's a pretty big dent. They're still squarely in their primes.

Curious about brassard, Kessel, olesiak

What do you Think...Murray for Fleury swap.
Jason Mackey
2:27
And Vegas would do that ... why?
Amy
2:27
Do you think Columbus will hold the division lead by the end of the season? Maybe win a playoff series...beside the penguins, what other teams aren’t playing to their potential in your opinion
Jason Mackey
2:28
I don't think they will at the end, no, although I could see them winning a round. Boston has struggled, although the Bruins have been hurt. L.A. has been bad. The Blues and Blackhawks, too, in my opinion.
