do you think Evander Kane comes to Pittsburgh? if so does he play with sid and if the pens keep going down this road of inconsistantsy do they throw Hornqvist in there and try to snag a first rounder from buffalo as well? the money Hornqvist will get on the open market must be more than the pens can afford. I'd hate to see Hornqvist go for nothing however.
Jason Mackey
1:47
No. They're not going to trade Hornqvist. Can't tell you for sure that they're going to re-sign him. He might try to cash out. But they aren't going to trade him. He's too important. As for Kane, I don't see a fit, but I don't think the Penguins have closed the door. The issue is more with character and what he does in the room. I wouldn't want it, personally, from what I've heard.

if the pens fall out of the playoff hunt could you see them becoming sellers?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I don't think they're going to fall far enough for that to happen. It's nearly impossible with three-point games.
JP
1:47
Who do you think the pens will aquire via trade if anyone? And who would you personally like to see the pens go after?
Jason Mackey
1:48
I think they'll go after a third-line center. Too many names, and not enough direct knowledge of other teams' plans, to pinpoint one.

What would you say have been Oleksiak and Simon’s greatest strengths and weaknesses on the ice? Also, where do you believe Simon fits best, on the 3rd line despite the Kids 2.0?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I'd like to see Simon get more seasoning in WBS, but if he's here, I'd rather see him playing with skilled players. ... Simon's greatest strengths have been his vision and playmaking ability. ... I like Oleksiak's shot and skating ability for a big guy. He's sneaky-good offensively.

With Evander Kane being on the so called "hot seat" in Buffalo do the pens make a push for him to play with Sid or do they stay away and go after another player?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I think they stay away. It's not what they need in that room right now.
They need a Cullen type, Dad. I don't see Kane being that.

Sorry for the repeat questions if there are some just got to the chat, gotta catch up.
Jason Mackey
1:51
Bunch of questions about who the Penguins are going to acquire in a trade.
Shawn
1:52
Have you heard any rumors or inside info on any potential trades? Do you think he should have pulled the trigger earlier when asking prices weren't as high?
Jason Mackey
1:52
If I did, Shawn, I wouldn't be saving it until my chat to throw it out there. What I know is what you've read. ... How do we know asking prices weren't as high earlier?
Joe
1:52
Hunwick has not been good. Why is he playing at times over Cole, who seems to be a healthy scratch more often?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Heck of a question, Joe. My guess is that the Penguins know they've invested money and years into Hunwick, and they want to get something out of it. With Cole, they know he's gone, and the issues between him and Sullivan have been well-documented.

Makes more sense to wait for someone to come to you right?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Especially if you can manage to win while waiting. You need to get the right fit. Not get one just to get someone.
What Would Yinz Do?
1:53
Yah gotta keep one, trade one, cut one: Maatta, Letang, Schultz. GO!
Jason Mackey
1:55
Why would I cut a guy when I'd still have to pay him? ... I would actually keep Letang. I think he's Norris Trophy-level good when he's on. He's just not right now. I do believe it'll happen. If I had to trade someone, the other two would be marketable, although I never would unforced.
Ryan

What are the odds penguins go after Evander Kane? And what would be the return to Buffalo
Jason Mackey
1:55
Believe Botterill has said a premium prospect, first-round pick and conditional pick. DOn
1:56
Don't know if that's a starting point or what. Only prospect the Penguins have that would fit would be Sprong. I wouldn't trade him for Evander Kane right now.

You mentioned Bozak from Toronto earlier.  To me, a Cole for Bozak swap seems incredibly fair to both sides, and maybe even Cole plus a 4th would help even it out.  Cole would certainly be an upgrade to a guy like Polak in Toronto.  Maybe increase the pick to a 3rd to try and move things along.....if Toronto actually wants to move Bozak.
Jason Mackey
1:57
Don't disagree, but that wouldn't work money-wise. Cole makes $2.1, Bozak $4.2 M. It would have to grow in some form or fashion to work.

I've been here for a few weeks now.  What do my coaches think of my play so far?  What are my strengths and weaknesses?  Will they consider keeping me after this season?
Jason Mackey
1:58
Hey Jamie. They've been happy. They want you to take fewer risks and recognize things better, but they're happy with your skating offensive instincts and shot. You could also stand to be a little bit meaner on the ice. You're huge and very strong. Do you know that?
TK
1:58
Even if those things about Cole are true, isn't he still a better defenseman than Hunwick?
Jason Mackey
1:58
I think so. You think so. Doesn't seem like the Penguins coaches agree, and their opinion is the one that matters.
Ryan
1:58
Will the penguins make any type of splash before or at the trade deadline
Jason Mackey
1:58
I think so, Ryan. I think they'll get a third-line center.

I have heard Crosby likes having a veteran “dad” on the team that can take the team to task, but at what point will Crosby, Geno, Letang step into that role. They all have much NHL experience and I can’t imagine their voices wouldn’t  be respected. Why do they need to bring someone in for that role? I think they could fill that role just as well as a Cullen What is the difference I’m missing?
Jason Mackey

You're asking someone (Crosby) to operate outside of his personality. For one, he's not a Dad. He's not even engaged. Crosby also respects his elders A LOT. He likes having someone like that to lean on. And as great of a player as Malkin is -- and Letang, too -- that doesn't mean they're the rah-rah, keep-everyone-loose types. They're not.

If Penguins were willing to give up either Cole or Hunwick along with Sheary, what type of 3C might they get back?
Jason Mackey
2:00
Probably a middle-of-the-road type, not an elite guy. Sheary has three goals in 24 games. Can't imagine teams are lining up to pay for $3 million a year for that.

Did Sid tell Sullivan, "I'm tired of us collapsing around the goalie. I'd like the D and forwards to force more turnovers and play a riskier style so that we can get more breakaways and hopefully more scoring" because that's what happened the last few games?
Jason Mackey
2:01
Overall, the Penguins have been more aggressive the past few games, yes. I don't think it's because of a request Sid made to Sullivan.
Albert

How do you like the new 3rd line with Sheary, Guentzel, and Kessel? I know they haven't scored yet, but it seems like they have good zone time, generate good chances, and are close to becoming a force. Despite the peaks and valleys of the Bruins game, that was the first time I've really thought all 4 lines were dangerous this year. Thanks for taking the time to do this Jason, love your feedback and analysis!
Jason Mackey
2:02
Thanks, Albert. Appreciate that. I don't like it. I get what you're saying, but I don't love Guentzel at center. Would much rather have him on wing. I know why he's playing center -- I wrote it -- but long-term, I think they need to get someone for that role, preferably a guy who can play with Phil.
