Hi folks. Greetings from Ottawa. Thanks for hanging out. Let's have some fun.
HB

I know Sid doesn’t care about the accolades but he should of won GQ champion of the year not Kevin Durant
Jason Mackey
1:03
Thanks for the input, HB. Don't know the criteria for the award. DIdn't even know it existed.

Is being Murray’s back up the best thing for Jarry even if he’s the best option ATM
Jason Mackey
1:04
The Penguins are in the business of winning NHL games. Right now, he's their best way of doing that. Simple as that. If Jarry plays well -- and I do think he has, to an extent -- the Penguins wouldn't have a problem playing him more to keep him fresh.
HB

When on the street do people ask for your autograph cause I would
Jason Mackey
1:05
Ha. Never been asked. Nor should I ever get asked. Unless, of course, said person is crazy.
HB

How active is Mario with the players is that normal
Jason Mackey
1:06
Not a ton. He stays out of their business. That's one of many reasons players love playing here. He and Burkle -- and Davey wrote a great piece about this -- are the opposite of meddlesome owners. Mario obviously knows what it's like to play. Players are treated probably better than anywhere else in the league. Everything is first class and then some. Mario's around some and is friendly, but he's not sitting in on Sullivan's staff meetings, if that's what you're asking.

I’m thinking you call sprong up then you have 1st sid and the kids 2nd malkin and the kids rust sprong 3rd HSK line 4th HMK line and you bring in reaves for like caps and flyers games
Jason Mackey
1:08
I'm thinking the Penguins don't agree with you. The plan was for Sprong to develop and do exactly what he's doing. My sense is that they want him to do more of that before making a move. I've also liked Sheary, Sheahan and Hornqvist as a third line. I want to see more.
And one last thing, HB, I've now answered more questions from today today than I have my wife. :-)

What can you tell us about the Devils. Are they the real deal? Judging by the team
Jason Mackey
1:09
Not a ton, sorry. This is a Penguins chat, I cover the Penguins, and they haven't played the Devils this season. Does seem, though, like Ray Shero has done a great job building them, as many expected he would. Their defense is a little light, in my opinion. And I'm frankly stunned that Brian Gibbons has eight goals or whatever it is. Didn't even know he was still in the league.

Hi Jason, I loved your article on Maatta, just like your article earlier in the year on Murray.  Are the any other Pens you hope to have one on ones with?
Jason Mackey
1:11
Thanks so much, LN. Glad you noticed. I like doing those ... well, more than anything else in this business. And, yes, there are more. All of them, really, given how much I like these, but I think the ultimate would be getting Kessel to agree to something substantive, outside of the locker room. I'm not terribly optimistic it will ever happen, but I know he has a tremendous personality and is a lot of fun. We just see zero of that in his normal interactions with us.

What player(s) are winning the Pens fantasy football league?
Jason Mackey
1:11
I believe Dumo was doing well. He's the commish -- and I don't think he rigs it. Olli is struggling right now. Believe Sid is middle of the pack.

Looks like rain, or Black throated wind?
Jason Mackey
1:12
Black Throated Wind all the way.

How is Sheahan fitting in the locker room? How would you assess him as the third center solution so far?
Jason Mackey
1:13
He's fitting in well, yes. It's an easy room to fit into. Very welcoming. As for his play, I thought he's been ... quiet. He makes a lot of safe plays. I'd like to see him take more chances. He needs more finish, but I have liked that line, as I said earlier, with Sheary and Hornqvist. I think they might have stumbled upon something really good.

What do you want for Christmas, or whatever you celebrate?
Jason Mackey
1:14
I do celebrate Christmas, and I have zero idea, honestly. I'm gonna need to come up with something soon.

Why is Sullivan so reluctant to change up the starting lineup and create a competition?  Archibald got a single game, Rowney on IR gives room for a callup.  That young fresh blood is what brought us success in the first place and now Sullivan seems complacent.
Jason Mackey
1:19
I wouldn't say complacent. My rebuttal to that would be: Who do you take out? Not 87, 59, 17, 71, 81, 43 or 72. ... We're talking 62, 15, 33, 34 and 75. ... They have no other centers knocking the door down at the moment, so I'd roll with those two. Whether you agree or not, they want Reaves in the lineup. ... That leaves us with 34 or 62. ... Maybe Kuhnhackl, but I've liked his game. Hagelin does have speed and is a primary penalty killer. He also makes $4 million, and it would be great to flip him if you play him with good people, and he gets hot. ... I'd play Archibald to keep him active, but I don't know what sort of "competition" there really is at this point.

Do you expect to see Pyatt and Pageau line blanketing the Crosby line
Jason Mackey
1:20
Yeah, I'd expect a lot of Pyatt-Pageau-DiDomenico out against Sid's line tonight. With last change, Sens will be able to get it, too.
Danny
1:20
When is the coaching staff gonna end the Reaves project and start getting Archibald some games?
Jason Mackey
1:20
I wouldn't hold your breath.

In previous matchups, pyatt & pageau seem to have shadowed crosby, is that the case tonight?
Jason Mackey
1:21
Yep, expect a lot of that. Boucher loves that matchup, you're right.
Jerry

Excellent article this morning.  Wasn't sure how one could come up with twenty points without some throwaway lines, but you achieved that with ease.   The prevailing thought seems to be that Kessel and Sprong will not be on the team at the same time for very long, because of supposed similarity in strengths and weaknesses.  That Kessel will have to be moved after Sprong's ascension after a 1/2 season or so.  At this point, Sprong costs relatively next to nothing.  Why not keep both for a season or two and see how it plays out?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Thank you, Jerry. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wouldn't totally rule it out, but the issue here is this: Kessel doesn't fit terribly well with Crosby because he's not a big corner/straight line guy. Much better with Malkin. Sprong is very similar, as you said. If you play one with Malkin, who's the other play with? If they have a 3C who works with either, then I think they could consider it, sure. I don't think they have that, though. With money they're going to owe guys like Guentzel, Rust and eventually Murray, they're going to need to save somewhere, and having two players with the same skill set -- when one is getting up there -- it might be smart business to cut bait while the player (Kessel) is still at least somewhat attractive to other teams. Because, let's be honest, if he's not scoring, he's not adding much else.

In previous matchups, Pyatt & Pageau have shadowed Crosby, do you think thats the case tonight again?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Yep. That line yesterday and this morning was Pyatt-Pageau-DiDomenico. Would expect them to see a lot of Guentzel-Crosby-Rust.

Who is a veteran you would like to see the Pens sign for their bottom six, and which rookie would you like to see called up?
Jason Mackey
1:26
As long as the Penguins are scoring -- they have 13 goals in their last four games -- I wouldn't push a rookie. I'd let Sprong develop more, the way they wanted to. A veteran from the outside? Hmm ... If Minnesota keeps struggling, wonder if that Cullen guy would be available? Seriously, boy could the Penguins use him right now.
