I would argue that pro sports isn't always about being fair. It's not Little League. it's about winning and producing results.

Jason, is it time for Rutherford to maybe make a serious trade with Malkin or Kessell?
Jason Mackey
2:05
No, I don't think it's anywhere near time for either one of those moves. Something smaller, sure, but not what you mentioned.

What are the odds Rutherford trades a 2019 1st round pick for defense or scoring depth? Wouldn’t it make more sense to, finally, keep some of the early-round picks?
Jason Mackey
2:06
I think there's sort of an expectation from the Penguins perspective that they're gonna flat-out stink whenever this window closes. Jim could hang onto those picks -- they have lost a lot -- but I don't think there's a lot of concern from the organization about keeping draft picks; Rutherford's mandate is to win now and worry about the rest later.

Hey Jason what is the Pens cap space now ? All this talk of a big trade but unless Schultz contract is protected because of injury it’s basically a contract for contract deal correct ?
Jason Mackey
2:07
They can go over the cap to an amount equal to Schultz's contract, but they have to be cap-compliant when he comes back. That's the tricky part. So they can spent whatever the prorated portion of $6 million would be, but they need to eventually send enough dollars out to get back under once Schultz is healthy.

Thankfully Jeff Howstin isn’t a GM for either team  Frankly, Pens have the right personnel and Sheehan will
Sorry...Pens have personnel now that ZAR and Wilson give stability to bottom six and Sheehan, if he plays as he did last night, could find himself odd man out when Brass returns.  That’s still leaves the question mark of goaltending...?
Jason Mackey
2:08
That and defense. But other than that ... Ha, I think they need to see more point production from Sheahan to stay in that role ... or maybe stay on the team. I think there's a good chance it comes if he stays with Guentzel and Phil, and I liked that line for a decent amount of last night. But they need to find a spot for Brassard, too, once he's healthy.

Do you think they should give jarry a try at goalie if Murray continues to struggle ?
Jason Mackey
2:09
DeSmith has been fine. I wouldn't go there yet. Jarry's numbers in the AHL haven't been great, either. For me, a great concern -- once they start getting some results -- would be getting Murray's game back to where it's been in the past.

How could it be too early to pass judgement on Jack Johnson?  There is a decades worth of data that tells you by any statistical metric you want, that he is, at best, a replacement level NHL D-Man.  He does not drive play, do enough offensively, or keep the puck out of the net enough to warrant a 1 year deal, better yet FIVE!?!?  The pens will either eat a good chunk of that deal, or give up an asset (first round pick, daniel sprong) for possibly Seattle to take it off their hands.  Just TERRIBLE roster moves since Jason Botterill left town.
Jason Mackey

He's played 14 games with his new team, one that, as a whole, has struggled. I should also point out that I didn't sign Jack Johnson. There may be some confusion there.

Who is Jim really looking to trade besides Sprong. And what do you think the return would be?
Jason Mackey
2:12
I think Jim is open to pretty much everything outside of the obvious -- Sid, Geno, Letang, Phil and Hornqvist, probably Murray or Guentzel, too. Return? That's hard. I do think he would want NHL players back, though. I don't think he's looking to firesale for picks. ... Probably looking to get a D, maybe a RW to play with Sid.

Just came thru no supplemental discipline for Geno...
Jason Mackey

Yep. Happened this morning, actually, while I was out with my family. Ha.

What would it take to get Larkin here and  should the Pens be interested?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I would imagine they would use a car service, although if he's in another city, I'm guessing they could buy him a plane ticket. ... Have a tough time seeing the Red Wings trade him, though.

Hello. Have you heard any news on how Lauzon might be recovering from his injury?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I have not, I'm sorry. Just hasn't been the right time to ask anyone.
Jerry
2:13
If you owned the Pens, would you be troubled that the coach devalues assets (Cole, Reeves) and potential assets (Poulliot, Sprong) by outright refusing to play sufficient minutes, if play at all?
Jason Mackey
2:14
No, I would look at the two Cup rings he helped me get and think that, like all coaches, he has his way of doing things. I don't have to like it, or agree with it, but if it produces results, it's kinda tough to complain. Sullivan is hardly alone by being how he is, trust me.

Are there any big trades on the horizon do you think?
Jason Mackey
2:14
I think GMJR is trying. If one doesn't happen, it's not for lack of effort.
John Moore
2:14
Kessel has been great this season imo, I do feel like no one is producing but the big four and big rig
Jason Mackey
2:15
I think that's fair. He's never going to be a Selke candidate, but he's put up points. What more do you want?

What are your thoughts on the penguin forwards collapsing so low in the defensive zone both off the rush and when the opposition sets up? Its clearly a coaching directive. I'm not sure if it started around Letang's injury in 17 or sometime last year. But it leaves acres of space for the opponent and doesn't really result in the forwards helping their slow-footed defensemen.  It also seems like the antithesis of their pressure playing style
Jason Mackey
2:16
But it might be out of necessity -- or so that's the thinking. Other people here have lamented the forwards not collapsing low enough in the zone. There's no perfect answer here. This is part of it, sure, but there are several other issues.

Pens are better when they are deeper— they need Brassard to succeed and they need to give him support... I see the lines as follows:
guentzal- Crosby-ZAR
Vince
2:17
You have mentioned who the Pens might trade. Any ideas on who they may be targeting to get back?
Jason Mackey
2:17
I have not heard that, Vince. Only name I've kinda heard a little is the Zykov kid from Carolina, but that obviously wouldn't be a big move at all.

When is the next Pens practice?
Jason Mackey
2:17
Tomorrow, 11, Cranberry.

I think the biggest problem with this team is that it is old and slow.  We do not know how to win as an old slow team.  We won the cups because we were able to bring up several young, fast players.  Any chance we see 4 or 5 older players traded?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I think four or five is a lot. Maybe one or two. And they could try to upgrade the speed with Olli Maatta's spot. I agree with you that they need to get faster, but trading 4-5 veterans might be a little drastic.

Sprong lacks some hockey IQ for how to get open in the NHL and get his shot off quickly. Because of that, it’s going to take the organization some time and playing time for him for it become second nature for him...I don’t see why, given how everyone else is playing, they can’t afford him that—if the coach wasn’t so stubborn. I can’t see that trading Sprong is going to help the team any in that I don’t see them getting a Skilled NHL player back for him, just a prospect or a pick. The only NHl player they could get back would be a fourth line player and why would they do that?
Jason Mackey
2:19
If they did that, I think it would be because they were convinced it would never work here. Maybe because of Sullivan but maybe they also just weren't confident would figure it out ... and maybe they had someone else who they thought would.
