Will the Pens have practice today?
Jason Mackey
2:19
No. They're off.

Would the penguins have interest in Faulk, panarin, or bobrovsky?
Jason Mackey
2:19
I think they would have interest in all of them. What's the asking price? Sprong for Panarin? Pretty confident Rutherford would do that.

The only thing the Pens really NEED in a trade is a RH defenseman who is mobile, like Trevor Daley 2016 version...what’s the likelihood of that good player being available...almost nil....they should work on making changes with the system and the players that they have, including in WBS
Jason Mackey

That's a fair point. And they do have Schultz coming back eventually. I think they could look to buy low on a right-side guy who they can rehab. They don't need a bonafide top-four guy; they can work with him.

I'm not suggesting that pro sports is about being fair, but as you said, it's about producing results. That's something Sprong has failed to do. His issues with spacing, hockey IQ and physicality on the puck that he had in the AHL continue to show through. Putting him with Malkin or Crosby may mask some of those, but I don't think that makes you a better team, and I think it's not what a coach that's trying to preach 'play the right way' should ever do. If effort, toughness on the puck and smart decisions are things that Sullivan is considering to be the key points of their struggles, then how does promoting Sprong do anything but work against those ideals?
Jason Mackey
2:21
It doesn't. It works against those ideals. But you are trying something. Neither of us know 100 percent it won't work, right? So try it. And if it does, you've figured something out. Worse, you've checked a box.

If the FAN hires you for a daily show, which of the current roster of FAN hosts would be your first pick for co-host?  Bonus:  Last pick?
Jason Mackey
2:21
Ha. They won't be hiring me for a daily show ... probably because I love where I'm at and won't be leaving. But if I had to do a show with anyone, it would have to be Starkey.

On nightly sports talk gene made a good point that younger players have a hard time developing on this team cause there’s few open spots and there isn’t patience shown cause they are playing with such high end talent.  Some players need more time to develop and feel confident and comfortable and they don’t seem to have given Sprong any time or leeway.  From the beginning they have seemed to mess up his development and confidence
Jason Mackey
2:22
Thank you for relaying Gene's thoughts. I agree with them. It's tough to be a young player on this team. It's also tough because Sullivan isn't giving Sprong the same sort of leeway he gave to guys like Sheary and Rust way back when.

Wanting to trade and being able to trade are two different things .  Do you think there are many teams out there willing to trade so early in the season ?  Especially with the pens ?
Jason Mackey
2:23
No, I think there's a lot of teams hesitant to do it, still trying to figure out what they have.

Marner for Sprong and Olli ... JkJK  Who would be good and probable options for Sid's wing?
Jason Mackey
2:24
I'd go with the exact same lines as last night, honestly. I'm fine with Simon on the left and Rust on the right. I liked Guentzel with Sheahan and Phil. Give it another look. They weren't bad last night. Just didn't get the result.

GMJR and HCMS both said they did their "due dilligence" before signing Jack Johnson.  I would just like to know what that was?  He doesn't pass the eye test, stats aren't good, and underlying numbers are dreadful.  How can Mario be happy about his GM basically flushing $16+M down the toilet?  Especially after making the same mistake the year prior with Matt Hunwick?
Jason Mackey
2:25
Again, Andy, I didn't sign Jack Johnson. Just feel the urge to point that out. ... They like his ability to make a good first pass. Last season he was the fifth-most effective doing that in the NHL. They also like his size, and they thought that he could mesh better within the Penguins' team concept that he did in Columbus -- I.e. He's asked to do less and has a little more cover when he does screw up. That hasn't happen, I know. But let's let it play out a little more, OK?
Dinie
2:25
Like the rest of Pgh, maybe Murray misses Fleury
Jason Mackey
2:26
There's some suspicion around the team of that. Not Fleury personally but more than Murray may need pushed and poked a little more than your average goalie.
RPK
2:26
Jason, you're very optimistic on ZAR ability.  Why?  I don't see all that much there.
Jason Mackey
2:26
He's a young kid. He's finishing his development. I've seen him play at the rookie tournament and in Wilkes, when he's confident and actually fits, he can be very good. He just has to get that to translate to the NHL, no different than any other young player.

I’m not getting over myself here but if they continue to struggle could, do you think they trade a guy like sheahan?Hags?Maatta?
Jason Mackey
2:27
Yes, I think all three of those are realistic possibilities, although not in that order.
Andy
2:27
They should have kept Botterill and let GMJR ride into the sunset after PDO-ing his way to a second straight cup.
Jason Mackey
2:27
Geez, rough crowd.
Steven
2:27
Is Zykov someone the Penguins are interested in, or someone that's available? That would be a pretty good example of your sour apple for sour apple trade. I'm not convinced either guy would do better in either spot (I think they've both got the same issues of IQ), but it wouldn't hurt to roll the dice on it I don't think
Jason Mackey
2:28
They've talked about him. That's all I know. May have been basic, may have been a little more. Not sure yet.
TY
2:28
Do you think the Pens should consider acquiring a top 4 LHD? Someone like Brodie, Muzzin or Edler? The top 4 could be Dumo, Letang, LHD, Schultz with Oleksiak and Johnson as 5 and 6. They could then move Maatta for offensive reinforcement? Or involve him in the LHD trade. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:29
I'm not against it, although I'd like to see them bring in a D who's a little more mobile if they do make a move. I don't see how Vancouver would go Maatta for Edler, though. That's insane. ... A true top-four D tends to be crazy expensive via trade, especially in November. Not sure the Penguins have the assets to pull that off, although I do think they could stand to get deeper on defense.

Sorry I meant a new right wing for Sid... What new player would be the ideal that could last with him
Jason Mackey
2:30
If Aston-Reese is going to play the right side, as he did last night, I think that's worth a look.

Simon...Guentzel...Rust...ZAR....Rikola...Johnson and Blueger and Jarry coming along nicely in Wilkes...all have progressed under the watchful eyes of Pens’ player development.
Jason Mackey
2:30
Thank you for that.

Do you think the signing of Johnson was at urging of Sid and gifting him that kind of contract was a “gift”so to speak to Sid?
Jason Mackey
2:31
No, I don't. I think there's legitimate belief from within the Penguins that Johnson would find himself here. Criticize that all you want, but that was the thinking. It's not charity for the captain, although Sid was all for it.

Seeing how the team bounces back after last night will be interesting .  They were the better team but the puck wasn’t cooperating .  If they show frustration this will be a long season
Jason Mackey
2:31
Agree. But if they replicate last night, I think they'll be fine.
Hey
2:31
Should the Pens look for a RW for Sid or LW for Geno? RW: Mantha, T. Johsnon, Zuccarello, Dzingel. LW: Pearson, Killorn, Perreault, Anisimov... amongst other possibilities.. Is the logic there?
