Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 12.13.18

The Price is right

Ignoring salary cap issues, what would it take to acquire Casey Price (if Murray cannot find his old magic)? Who would we have to give up as far as players. I was thinking Sprong and Cole as starters...
Jason Mackey
2:34
That would be hilarious if the Penguins offered Marc Bergevin Daniel Sprong and Ian Cole. Think he'd take it? What a negotiating strategy by GMJR!

Thanks re: Schultz. For some reason, I thought he was hurt later than that, after/during the Western Canada trip.

Thanks for doing this every week--your work is appreciated!

My pleasure. Thanks for following along.

I've heard Charlie Coyle's name out there, any chance that he would be a realistic option the Penguins look at?
Jason Mackey
2:35
I don't believe so, no. I haven't heard that.

U surely jest Jason suggesting Shaehan as your 3rd line center?  THe man went 79 games without a goal before.  Good players dont have that occur.  Ever.   At best he is a somewhat ok 4th line center.
Jason Mackey
2:36
I would give him a chance. Not saying it would happen. Just that I would give him a chance. He went 79 games without playing with Kessel, I'd like to point out.

Ouch seems like the Hawks are to the Pens as the Raiders are to the Steelers. Do you think Malkin is in it to win it this season? something seems wrong. Nice to see Rust break out  but sometimes it seems the Pens dont have a 3rd or 4th line but 2 5th lines ....great job Jason  your chat is a highlight of my week
Jason Mackey
2:37
Ha. Thanks for that, Bill. Yeah, I think Malkin is in it to win it. Motivation isn't an issue. Discipline and not getting hacked off mid-game is something he needs to get better at. That has gotten him a couple times.

Is Maatta on the chopping block???
Jason Mackey
2:37
Geez. Not even the trade block. Went all nuclear on poor Olli.

What’s up with the Zuccarello stuff and What about Bonino??? They could use him in my opinion
Jason Mackey
2:37
OK, we're going to put an end to INSERT PLAYER HERE trade speculation without linking a credible report. If you have it, link it. Otherwise, we're moving on.

Is it possible to reduce the number of high % goals the pens allow/face?  They seem to hand excellent opportunities to teams on a consistent basis.  I think they could really take a big step forward with improvements in this area alone
Jason Mackey
2:38
Absolutely, folks. I think it's possible to reduce the number of goals but also chances. That's a big part of the Penguins' problem right now. They're not having the puck enough, they're making some dumb mistakes, and they're allowing these chances. Their goaltenders -- when they've struggled anyway -- have then failed to make some big saves when they've needed to. Absolutely this is correctable.

102?  No way Jason.  No club other than Washington is winning consistently.   I'm going with 93.
Jason Mackey
2:39
Look at what was required to get third the past couple of years. Hasn't been lower than 98 in a while, if ever.

Do you think Riikola should get sent down to WB so he can at least play regularly.   With that said is he waiver exempt? Thanks
Jason Mackey
2:39
Yes. He can be sent down, and I think he needs to be sent down to get some games. He's not getting any better right now, and they need him to develop more.

The team has been moving away the last couple years from the speed and skill and rolling four lines formula. Do you think there’s some disjunction between what the front office is doing and the players they’re signing and how the coaching staff wants to play?
Jason Mackey
2:41
I don't think so. I think part of it is circumstance. Their signings haven't worked out, so they're forced to adjust. I do think there's been a disconnect with Sprong and Reaves, but I don't think that's anything terribly unique to this regime.

Jason, since you nailed the out come of last Friday's game in your Thursday chat, how do you think the outcome of the game against Boston will go?
Jason Mackey
2:41
Did I? I don't remember what I wrote. ... I think they win. I'm gonna say 3-1.

How are press conferences generally run?  Are there questions you are not allowed to ask?  Are you always at every post game conference?
Jason Mackey
2:42
I'm at every postgame press conference unless I'm not on the trip ... like last night in Chicago. At home, they're in the media room. Sullivan comes in, there's a mic that's passed, etc. On the road, Sullivan appears outside of the Penguins dressing room. There are never questions we're forbidden from asking -- they couldn't do that if they tried -- but they are obviously allowed to answer however they want. So we can ask. Doesn't mean it's getting an answer. Make sense?

You mean you give up a 4th liner of no real value, a rental D who generated a 3rd on the market and a goalie prospect when you have a 24 year old #1 goalie. The cap hit is the important part because it is what you’d have to replace with if you moved him. Brassard has constantly been moved around, not had particularly consistent linemates and is trying to adapt to a completely new role. But yes, let’s trade him. That’ll be a totally worthwhile trade
Jason Mackey
2:43
I'm not saying I 100 percent would. But I would entertain it.

Jason, what will it take to see Guentzel get his shot off a little faster, as that looks like the difference for him both last year and this year. He is most effective when he shoots fast and he is delaying a little. Why doesn’t this come out in film and via coaching?
Jason Mackey
2:44
I can't say what they've worked on behind the scenes. I do think, with Jake, that some of it has to do with confidence. The faster he's thinking the game, the faster the shot gets off.

Pens win if 72 plays last name, different team without his heart in th lineup
Jason Mackey
2:44
Agree there. Need to get him back.

Who do u think was biggest loss Pens have suffered from the cup teams? Was personally shocked that we gave Kunitz, i know he’s not doing well now but he always played so well w Sid and was a great leader.
Jason Mackey
2:45
I think Bonino. While I agree with you -- and might also include Fleury -- I don't know if they've addressed the loss of Bonino yet. He meant so much to them and played such an important role.

Letang holds the puck too long on power plays, let’s the puck out of the zone on sloppy stick work, and cannot get the puck through. His reads are poor. Why do the pens keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. He has poor instincts with a man advantage.
Jason Mackey
2:46
I don't really have a huge problem with what Letang has done on the power play. As a whole, I think they've gotten too cute at times, and this is a part of it. But it's not just a Letang issue.

Do u think Malkin needs a spark or something because man he has not played good
Jason Mackey
2:46
I think Sullivan needs to have a chat with Malkin ASAP.
