Good day Jason.  The pens have to be pleased with Petterson's play.  It was a nice hockey trade for both sides.
Jason Mackey
1:35
Agree and they agree. Kid's a very good player.

I used to think Brassard was great when he was with the NYR and OTT.  He doesn't look like the same player now, poor fit or not.  With a relatively minor cap hit, could the Pens expect a decent return if they wanted to move him?
Jason Mackey
1:35
Yeah, I think the return would be decent if they decided to go that route.

Love your work - would read your shopping list if you posted it! Happy Holidays to you and your growing family!

Ha. Is this my wife? Thank you for the kind words, though.

I mean this in the nicest way possible. But does 19 realize how unliked he is in PITT?
Jason Mackey
1:36
If he checks out this chat, he'll notice. ... Everyone except JohnAl, that is.

Jason, how much of allowing Johnson to stay in the lineup is related to how much he makes?  Seems to be stuck in the line up, when Rikkola could be of more of a success on D.
Jason Mackey
1:38
I think Johnson has been fine on the third pair with Pettersson. Everyone wants to blame Johnson, but he's been on the ice for four five-on-five goals in the past nine games. Letang, Dumoulin, Maatta and Oleksiak have all been on for more.

In a perfect world tho, I still put 19 with 87 & 59 and look for a more Defensive 3rd line C in a trade for 1 of our 6 LHD - (Faksa DAL- My dream, Danault MTL, Lowery WPG) and then at the deadline we could beg LA for Hags back for picks with the Cap space saved from Schultz ??
Jason Mackey
1:40
That's a fair point, Jeff. What about Brassard with Sid and Jake and Sheahan as your 3C? I could see it, although at the moment I wouldn't do a thing with Rust. And I think you need to not block Simon on the right side, either. ... I don't think the centers you mentioned would balance for a trade with, say, Oleksiak; they'd probably have to part with Maatta, although I think you'd be OK with that. ... The Schultz money is only good as long as he's out, meaning once he's back, they have to be cap compliant. So they could get Hagelin back, but there likely would have to be a corresponding move to free up money.

Does Oleksiak become the odd man out when Schultz comes back?
Jason Mackey
1:41
Could be. I think it also might depend on injuries. That's a long time off from now. A lot can happen.

Hey Jason. Which is/was the worse defensive unit? The 2017 Cup team or the defenseman now?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I think the group now.

Hi Jason, happy holidays to you!  Poor Oleksiak, he stands up for his team and teammates and Wilson seems to get just an extra second or so head start and he is put in an awkward position.   I wish Wilson was man enough to just go toe to toe and not have to swoop in like that.
Jason Mackey
1:41
I had no problem with how Wilson handled that last night. He answered the bell and would decisively. He's done a lot of dirty stuff in his career. I'm not putting this in that category.

The NBCSN guys (Dreger) were talking about Rutherford doing something to counter Tom Wilson.  Mentioned several players who could be available and would stand up to Wilson.  Have you heard any rumors or do you believe they would trade for someone who is geared to counter Wilson?
Jason Mackey
1:42
I have not, and I don't think that's a direction they would legitimately go. Sullivan is gonna want to be speed, speed, speed. Didn't work with Reaves. Won't happen now.

How about Matt Murray Jason he looks good and also do you think the pens go for D-man depth or top 6 depth??
Jason Mackey
1:43
He did look good, although I wouldn't say great. But better than earlier this season, for sure. Looks healthy. Just needs to knock more of the rust off. I think GMJR is still trying to figure his target out, to be honest.

I’m not an expert in hockey so this question is perhaps amateurish. Why with 2 minutes left in the game and an extra attacker on the ice did the Penguins seem less aggressive and stay on defense? To my non expert eye, they seemed to throttle down and resign themselves to taking body shots. In previous power plays they seemed much more aggressive to extent they stole puck and played offense.  Seems like sitting back letting Ovechkin fire bombs will ultimately fail them? The result was good this time but really hard to watch. #anxiety
Jason Mackey
1:43
Ha. Welcome to hockey, Lee. They're trying to not give up a softie.
Alex
1:43
Does the team still talk about Fleury or act like they still miss him?
Jason Mackey
1:44
They've moved on. Those who knew him obviously love him, but that ship sailed a while ago.

I was sad to see Team Canada dropped Addison do you think he will make the team next year at the world juniors.
Jason Mackey
1:44
Certainly seems like he's on that path, HB.

Merry Christmas Jason...the 4th line has been quite good lately and I really liked 7/15 together....are those two together what was envisioned at the beginning of the season? Who are your best bottom 6 to get us on a deep cup run barring trades?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I wouldn't mind seeing either Simon or ZAR get a shot with those two. They're completely different approaches, but they could work. I want Hornqvist in the top-six ... or at least on a souped-up third line. I'm OK dropping the two guys I mentioned.

Watching the Pens Caps games are some of the best but to be honest I am stressed out the entire time worried that one of our players is going to be hurt by a Wilson/Ovie/Oshie cheap shot.
Jason Mackey
1:45
They certainly take a physical approach with the Penguins. Can understand what you're saying, for sure.

Looks like Murray may be returning to form. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Yeah, he might not suck after all. (This is sarcasm based on all the vitriol directed his way earlier this season.) Murray has it in there. It's just a matter of finding it again, and I think that's going very well right now.

Is it me or is there a problem with the timing of the line changes?  Last night, that awful line change led to a goal.  At one point Crosby was on his own in Washington's end  with the puck and two or three Washington players were on him.  No Penguins were in sight to help Crosby.
Jason Mackey
1:46
I think they're a little careless with that stuff. Have been a lot this season. That's a detail thing Sullivan talks about often. And it's players needing to be more aware more than anything.

1-1/2 years of Brassard with salary retention only netted Ottawa Gustavsson (a goalie prospect who’s 3-4 years from being NHL ready if at all), a 1st (again not a sure thing and far from being NHL ready) and Ian Cole (bottom pair UFA D flipped for a 3rd) — how exactly would trading him net us any kind of win now value?
Jason Mackey
1:47
If they got a third-line center who fit here, helped the third line produce more -- a la HBK -- and the Penguins used that to go on a late-season run.
