I kind of like Rust with crosby and guentzel. now that simon is back, who goes where?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I wouldn't touch that top line. I'd try Simon with Malkin or Brassard, depending on a few other factors.

Was the toe tapped puck into the net by Sid skill or luck? Mah-gawd the reflex at that speed is crazy.
Jason Mackey
1:48
Skill. It's incredible. I don't know how he does that stuff. Nobody does.

During the first or second intermission last night, the NBC analysts were discussing the Pen's trade talk.  I missed what they were saying.  What rumors are floating out there that they were discussing?
Jason Mackey
1:49
They always get discussed here, Mario. ... I've been asked about potentially getting someone to combat Wilson in the playoffs. They tried that once with Reaves, and we all saw how that movie ended. I can't see it happening again.

With a struggling powerplay, was there ever a thought just to keep the lines together as powerplay units?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Not really. Those guys were historically dominant last season. They didn't suddenly forget how to function on the power play. Patience. They'll get there.

Speaking hypothetically here (I know the team doesn't want to do it), but do you think another NHL team would take Jack Johnson and his contract? Or would you have to give them picks and prospects to do it.  Basically, I'm asking how he is viewed around the league. And if that has changed since this summer.
Jason Mackey
1:50
Speaking realistically, no. Five years for a guy his age? No way.

Hey Jason – Keep up the great work at PG and with these weekly chats, very insightful.  Of all the cities you travel which is your favorite and why?  Also, do you regularly meet up with opposite NHL teams columnists and compare notes?  Happy Holidays!

My top five would probably be: San Jose (close to San Fran), Vancouver, D.C., Manhattan and Montreal. ... Buffalo, Columbus, Long Island, Raleigh and Boston are close. ... Yes, there's a nice camaraderie among hockey writers. It's one of the things I like most about this job. We don't always get together -- it depends on the city -- but yes, we'll hang out with visiting writers and even amongst ourselves. Yohe, Bradford and I watched Steelers-Raiders together; Bombulie had a later flight, so he couldn't make it.

How frustrated do you think Ruhwedel is right now?
Jason Mackey
1:52
He shouldn't be. This is his role. Although I could understand him wanting to go somewhere else next season to play.

For all who bemoaned giving up Oskar Sundqvist and moving down 20 spots in the draft to get him, Reaves sure would have helped last night
Jason Mackey
1:53
I agree. I think Sullivan should've been more OK playing him 8-10 minutes a night. I think he would've been good for the Penguins. Never understood why he wasn't given more of a chance.

Bozak is your big solution for Brassard? A man being paid 5 million dollars a year, doesn't PK and is more suited to top 6 C role than a bottom 6 role? You're going to encounter the same issues you think are so devastating right now?
Jason Mackey
1:53
I'm willing to bet Bozak can fit with Kessel better than Brassard does now, and that would be worth it to me.
Jeff Houston

BOZAK ???? That is a screaming Hells to NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO33 yr old Slow C with $5m cap hit for next 5 yrs
Jason Mackey
1:55
The contract drops over the next three ... down to $4.25 million in the final year. It would also have to be amended. ... A second counter-arguement would be this: Wasn't Bonino not the greatest skater, too?
Mike
1:55
Any word on Oleksiak for tonight's game?
Jason Mackey
1:55
Not until 5.

Do GMJR and HCMS believe Shultz will be effective upon his return?  Or might his injury impact his performance until next year?  A lot of us seem to be banking on his returning to top form right away.
Jason Mackey
1:55
They're expecting him to return to top form this season, absolutely.

What do you think we get tonight? Inspired/building of last night performance, or non-interested, phone it in, upright skating Malkin type performance?
Jason Mackey
1:55
I think it's actually the first one: inspired, building some momentum.

Hey Jason!!! Love your reports!! Any clue on an actual update on Jamie's status?

Small sample size, but I like what I've seen from Pettersson.  What do the Pens see his ceiling as?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I don't know if they know. Maybe a Dumoulin type. But he needs to get bigger, one. And maybe get a little more comfortable on the offensive end.
Paul T
1:56
Who would win if they fought.....Sid or Ovie?
Jason Mackey
1:56
Crosby. Ovechkin would come out hot early, maybe get in a few shots, but Sid would outlast Ovie.
Elijah
1:56
Hypothetically, if the pens were to trade someone , do you think they would go for a depth scorer or a d man?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Depth scorer.

Bleier comes out of the quiet to rip on the Steelers coaching a week ago and the next week Dupuis does the same. Who will appear next week and which coach and team will be criticized?
Jason Mackey
1:57
I didn't think what Dupuis said was that bad, honestly.
LA Matt
1:57
Is Murray back or is it too soon to make that determination?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Maybe a little soon, but he has been very good since returning. That's fair to say.
LA Matt
1:57
How is Tom Wilson still in the NHL?
Jason Mackey
1:58
He's a very good player, Matt. He's obviously not the most ... legal hockey player. But he can certainly play the game. It's a shame he does all the stupid stuff, honestly. Just play a hard, legal game, and he's good.
