Eh, I don't know. Brassard makes $5 million. That's high. I like Pageau a lot. Would think the ask would be high. Don't know if the Penguins would have the pieces to make it work, but they could dangle Cole and Sprong.
Arn Anderson

Of the current roster, who do you see GMJR trading?
Jason Mackey
1:30
Cole.
And Hagelin, if they can get someone to take his contract.
Steven

Are the Penguins likely to be in the market for a veteran backup come the trade deadline, or is Leighton as veteran depth the only move they're making in that regard?
Jason Mackey
1:31
He's veteran depth only. Provided he's healthy and Murray's healthy, Jarry is your backup.
Matt
1:31
Do you think those trades were a minor piece to something bigger, or GMJR is hoping those trades provide some sort of spark, well at least the Oleksiak trade.
Jason Mackey
1:31
I think Leighton was depth. Oleksiak could be seen as a spark, but more I see it as a setup to something bigger. ... I.e. It enables them to trade Cole.
Dale Tallon
1:31
Hi Jason.  I know you are friend my Jim Rutherford. I have this idea of a trade built around Barkov for Malkin.  Do you think I should even call him?
Jason Mackey
1:32
The Penguins aren't going to trade Malkin over this, Dale. But they might take Vince Trocheck from you.
VB
1:32
You'll probably get this question a lot, but if the Pens are looking for a scoring centre, who comes to mind to you? Who can the Penguins realistically get?
Jason Mackey
1:34
Only about 20 times a week, but it's what I signed up for. ... My top three would be Bozak, Haula and Pageau.
VB
1:34
Also, if GMJR fills that 3C role, do you think he's done making moves, or do they need another depth scoring player, anyone else? Thanks a lot.
Jason Mackey
1:34
It depends. If it works, then yeah, I think he's done. If not, I think he'll keep going until he addresses the depth scoring or runs out of time. Jim isn't the sit-on-his hands type.

Could you talk a little bit about how media availability works for you guys? You've mentioned that so-and-so wasn't available to talk to - are the players on some kind of rotating schedule? Are there only 3-4 players available at any given time? During media time, do you get a chance to go around to each player that's available, or do you just have to hang out near the player you most want to talk to and hope nobody else says anything too interesting?
Jason Mackey
1:36
Well, a lot of the situations are different. Monday's game, for example, Malkin talked for two minutes. By the time he had finished, the room had cleared out other than Reaves and Murray, who were both talking. Other times, there are more guys. Practices and gameday skates, almost everyone talks ... except for Malkin, Kessel and goalies on gamedays. If you skate, you're supposed to be available. I'll be the first to say I don't think that's necessary. Road games are tough because they have to work out, pack and fly somewhere, so those tend to be short.

Jason, I firmly believe that the reason the team is struggling is due to the 220 games they played the last two years. Would you agree?
Jason Mackey
1:39
Somewhat. But just because they've played a lot of hockey doesn't mean they should be given a free pass. They're pros. They get paid to do that. Does that they should be perfect all the time? No. They're human. But they have a better roster than their results show. It's not absurd to expect more.
Arn Anderson
1:39
Is management still trying to resign Patric Hornqvist? If so what do you think the terms will be?
Jason Mackey
1:39
They would like to, I can tell you that. I think he's probably going to want at least five years and maybe $6 million per. Might be a bit steep for the Penguins.
Bob
1:39
Hey jason, oleksiak trade was purely bcuz we are trading cole for a depth forward?
Jason Mackey
1:39
Very likely, yes, Bob.
Brian

Once sprong comes up, im assuming either reaves or simon will be removed from the lineup? And will reaves be used against the chipier teams only at that point
Jason Mackey
1:40
Could be. Sprong has to come up first. We also need to evaluate how Simon does with Sid tonight. Or if he plays with him at all. I'm not sure what to make of Simon yet. He's been all over the place. Hard to say who would come out of the lineup at this point.
Jim
1:40
Salary caps going up, does this mean its looking good that we will re-sign horny?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I think it increases the odds. Doesn't guarantee it.
Ben
1:41
Do you think reaves will at some point be removed from lineup bcuz of is aquiring a forward or bringing up sprong
Jason Mackey
1:41
If the fourth line continues what it started Monday in Arizona, no. If it plays the way it has for the greater balance of this season, yes. We'll find out more tonight. But that group has to produce more. Simple as that.
Jim Rutherford
1:41
I have this idea about a major shakeup trade with Florida. Do you think I shoudl call Dale?
Jason Mackey
1:42
Yes. Trocheck. See if he's available.
HB
1:42
Happy holidays I’m a little baffled by the Arizona trade I thought the pens were high on McGuire I could be wrong?
Jason Mackey
1:42
There's just no place, HB. Murray, Jarry, DeSmith ... he helped them get to the end goal. It's a shame to talk about a player like that, but this is a business. These guys know that.
Ben
1:42
Who are some 3rd line centermen u see being aquired in a trade
Jason Mackey
1:43
My top three would be Haula, Bozak and Pageau. Again, those are MY top three. Who they will acquire would involve informed opinion from opposing GMs, which I do not have. As for Penguins management, I do believe GMJR will get a 3C who adds more offensively than what they have now. Nothing against Sheahan, but the Penguins need more than they've been getting out of that spot.
HB
1:43
When is the trade deadline and do you see Rutherford making all this big trades now or closer to that deadline?
Jason Mackey
1:43
End of February, I believe. He won't wait that long.

What really needs to change? Are bigger moves on the way? What is really lacking in them right now?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Passion, energy, emotion. All the same if you ask me. They need to find it, soon. If they don't, yes, bigger moves will absolutely come.
Milan Kraft
1:44
Do you think that the biggest underlying issue for this team is one that can't be fixed? (i.e not enough gas left in the tank)
Jason Mackey
1:45
No, I don't think that's it. I think they can fix their issues. They need more depth scoring. They can acquire that. It might take losing a D (Cole), prospects (Sprong) and/or picks, thus mortgaging the future a bit, but I do think it can be fixed. The in-game stuff, this group is better than what they've shown. Majority is correctable.
