I would also like to tell all the the pens fans, to quote Aaron Rodgers “R-E-L-A-X” this team has proved if they slip in as the 8th seed this team can make a run.
Jason Mackey
1:45
Thanks, HB.

I don’t have the link but mark madden said olsiek slides in for cole right away because Sullivan doesn’t like Coles penalties. Is that true?
Jason Mackey
1:45
Yes.
Tristan Karlsson
1:45
Who are the highest quality Centers that the Penguins, in your opinion, ought to be targeting via trade?  ROR, Reinhart, Brassard, Karlsson, Haula, Pageau, Faksa?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I like all of those players, but some of their cap hits are a little bit high (Brassard, RoR). Reinhart would be a great fit, but if I was Buffalo, I'd be trying to keep Reinhart. ... I like Pageau and Haula. Bozak, too. Karlsson has been too good to move.

Jason - The pens need to trade Letang and get a much needed salary break.  Letang has had to change his game to avoid injury which is also making him ineffective - I love him but as a package deal with Hags we should be able to land a nice return - Possibly a 3rd line center and a young prospect.
Jason Mackey
1:48
So you want to trade an injury-plagued player who's struggling, who makes $7.25 million a year and couple him with an overpriced winger who has two goals this season and six last and makes $4 million a year for a third-line center and a young prospect? I wouldn't hold your breath.

Does the Penguins' recent success hurt the chances of trading with an Eastern Conference team? If I'm Toronto or Tampa, Rutherford has to blow me away to make me help wake his team up again. Normal rates wouldn't apply.
Jason Mackey
1:48
Also figure that Toronto and Tampa are doing really well with what they have. Why screw with it?

Is FLA a fit for Cole?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Yes, I could see that.
Logan
1:49
In my opinion, Cole will go for a prime-Kunitz. AKA Zack Smith.
Jason Mackey
1:49
I don't understand what a "prime-Kunitz" is.
Speed Kills
1:49
Why do the Penguins appear to be further distancing themselves from what, for all intensive purposes, brought them two Stanley Cups? The speed game.
Jason Mackey
1:50
I don't necessarily understand that. Sheahan, Reaves, Oleksiak. These aren't skaters. Say what you want -- and Sullivan did this morning -- about your identity staying the same, but it is fact that those guys will occupy one-sixth of their skater spots tonight.

What does ian cole get you? Whats his value, what player do you see the pens aquiring for him
Jason Mackey
1:50
You could easily package Cole with a pick and/or a prospect to get a third-line center.

Before Sid's latest slump he was actually on a tear, dont have the exact stats in front of me but something like 7 goals and 9 assists in 9 games.  Now he is obviously in slump currently, but I also seem to remember him getting blindside hit in the head during a game awhile back.  Any idea if these things align with each other?
Jason Mackey
1:51
No. I think we're grasping at air here. Sid's gonna be fine. He needs to shoot more and get some consistent linemates. He wouldn't be playing if he was, as you're alluding to, concussed. He takes head injuries too seriously (and knows the symptoms). Ditto for the Penguins.
Mark

Jason, thanks for doing these chats.  I find them very informative.
Jason Mackey
1:51
No problem, Mark. My pleasure.

you want emotion, urgency, and passion.  How would Justin Williams fit in as a Pens?  Probably a GMJR favorite and affordable from an asset trade standpoint.
Jason Mackey
1:52
Not terrible. They could use a veteran leader. I personally would prefer Cullen and would hold out for a little bit longer, thinking Minnesota might cut bait.
James
1:52
From your answer above regarding Letang, it sounds like he went from being considered one of the best defensemen in the NHL, to being so bad that the Penguins would like to get rid of him, but wouldn’t bring any return. Granted he’s struggling to get his game back after such a serious surgery and time off, but did he lose that much value to the Penguins organization?
Jason Mackey
1:52
No. It's not losing value to the organization. It's more assuming risk by an acquiring team. He's not playing well enough right now to make it worth it.
Pope
1:52
If you could have one player back on the roster from last season-who would it be?  Cullen? Kunitz? Daley? Flower? My choice would be Matt Cullen.
Jason Mackey
1:52
Mine, too, Pope.

With the Oleksiak trade, what the Penguins brass has been saying in regards to him being mobile and a solid puck mover seems to be at odds with what I've seen from a number of Dallas fans/blogger types. Do they believe it's a matter of comfort/confidence that made Oleksiak look worse than his physical tools would dictate or do they just see him differently to Dallas fans?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Probably a little bit of both. I think the Penguins think (and rightfully so) that they can rehab Oleksiak, the way they did with Schultz. I think it's worth a shot. I also think you're faster when you're comfortable and play with confidence, especially on the back end.

Are gms allowed to communicate and work on deals over the freeze? Basically doing everything but pull the trigger.... Or are they barred from even talking about trades?
Jason Mackey
1:53
It's sort of a gentleman's agreement to not get too far along, I believe. Plus, they probably want to enjoy their families.
Eddie Shack
1:54
Are the leafs actively trying to move Bozak?  And, if that deal happens do Bozak and his BFF The Thrill play on that 3rd line?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Yes on the second part. Can't say yes or no on the first. I'm not close enough to the Leafs to say with any accuracy whether they are or aren't.
Max Pacioretty
1:54
Friedman had brought up the pens being interested in me, is it true? Is a trade for me to the pens realistic?
Jason Mackey
1:56
They're keeping an eye on you, Max. However, I think the ask would be more than the Penguins would be comfortable offering.
Sofia
1:56
How likely is it that a good Malking or Croby scoring streak gives the team the spark they need?
Jason Mackey
1:56
The Penguins could draw a lot of confidence right now from one player going on a serious tear. Whether that's Crosby, Malkin, Murray or Kessel. Would help a lot if someone could carry this team for a stretch.
Tim
1:56
You make Letang sound like a scrub throw away player that doesn’t even have any trade value.  I’m hoping he returns to the elite defensemen we’re used to seeing.  Do you think the coaches and management see him the same way?
Jason Mackey
1:57
I think Letang is one of the best defensemen in the NHL. But he's been injured. If I'm an opposing GM, I'm not taking that risk right now for what he would do to help my team in the short-term. That's all I'm saying.
