No. Because he's liable to break out at any moment. He's earned the right to play through this.
Steven

You keep pushing Brassard trade, but you’re not going to get value, and you then need to replace him. With who and with what assets?
Jason Mackey
2:08
I don't know if I'm pushing the Brassard trade so much as relaying the sentiment that has been expressed to me by those who have the power to make it happen. If he's not a fit, he's not a fit. They need to find someone who is. They don't feel like they're getting enough from that spot right now. It's really not much more complicated than that.

Is brassard the 1st Pens player that didn't want to be here while you were on the beat?
Jason Mackey
2:08
It's the first where it has seemed this obvious. Or that there's been so little of a fit. Especially when you cross that with how skilled I think Brassard is. Someone that good, usually they all figure out a way to make it work.

Do you think what happened with Wilson will effect the way Oleksiak plays?
Jason Mackey
2:09
Not at all. He talked about it this morning. This stuff happens. It sucks, but you move on. I believe him. He can't change his game. Playing that way is a big part of why he's valuable to the Penguins.
Andy O
2:09
Why hasn't Derrick Brassard meshed here?
Jason Mackey
2:10
He's a top-six center being asked to play a bottom-six role. He wants to play with more skilled people, and he hasn't been able to make it work with the most skilled player he's been with (Phil Kessel). He gets less ice time, which also includes less on the power play.

Rankin All-Time 'Guins, 66 then 87 then 68 then 71 then...? And who would be an under-the-radar Top 10 All-Time 'Guin?...thanks
Jason Mackey
2:11
Gotta include Stevens, right? I also think Fleury deserves mention. ... Letang ... Francis ... Recchi, even though he played plenty of other places. ... Bourque, even, for beginning to end how much he's meant. Errey for that matter, too.

Hey Jason, hope your holiday was great. Another year, another wasted season for Jordan Staal in CAR. Can you think of an active player in the league who’s potential has been so squandered like Staal’s? It’s almost criminal how he’s being wasted there. On a scale of 1-10, how possible is it that GMJR has interest and WOULD make the move?
Jason Mackey
2:12
I can't, honestly. Every single year I wonder why he hasn't asked to play somewhere else now that his brother is gone. Raleigh is an awesome place, but if I'm a hockey player ... man, when's the last time he even made the playoffs?

do u think jim rutherfor has anything up his sleve to mak us much better on defence
Jason Mackey
2:12
At this point, I don't think he's working on anything specifically for defense, no.

2:12
Hi Chris, do you expect the cap to go up next year?
Jason Mackey
2:12
The second Chris ... this is weird. Yes, I do expect it to rise.

Hello Jason, did you have a nice feast this 25th? I think your best present this year has been the welcome of another Mackay junior! ^_~
You know, I am a big fan of Malkin, I'm worried... what's his biggest issue lately, it's speed skating ( I say that because watching him on TV is not the same as someone watching him live in arena) or playmaking decision?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I did ... and thank you. Young man was born back in October, but we were thrilled for him to experience his first Christmas. Everything was great, and thanks for asking. I think the biggest issue with Malkin right now isn't skating. It's pressing. Trying to do too much. Getting frustrated. Also building chemistry with linemates -- anyone, not just Phil.

Malkin wll be fine, especially back with #72, as far as 3rd center, if GMJR flips Brassard is it for another center or winger and try Sheahan at center gain?
Jason Mackey
2:14
Very likely, yes.
Reston Pen
2:14
Hi Jason, has Brassard’s trade value been diminished by his failure to perform with the Pens?
Jason Mackey
2:14
I don't think so. He's a UFA to be, meaning it's low-risk. And I think people will realize there's skill there. It just hasn't translated to Pittsburgh. Mind you, I don't think they'll get a ton for him, but he hasn't torpedoed his value here, either, which is what I think you asked.
Eddie Shack
2:15
What kind of team would want Brassard straight up - or do you need to sweeten the pot with say Maata?
Jason Mackey
2:16
You might need to sweeten the pot, either with Maatta or I could see Pearson being part of that, too. ... You know one place I think might be interesting: Montreal. Habs are hanging around. Could bank on him being real happy in that city. They could use someone like him. Don't know what they could give, though, but the Habs are a team that intrigues me.

You making the SO CAL trip?
Jason Mackey
2:16
Absolutely. Can't wait. Especially for the San Jose (for me San Francisco) part.
John
2:16
Your last description of a center screams Dzingel out of Ottawa. Might not be too eager for a center out of Ottawa, though.
Jason Mackey
2:17
Ha. PTSD or something of the like, huh? Can't imagine Ottawa would wanna make that move, either. Makes no sense for the Sens.
GC from Seal Beach
2:17
Jason are you making the SO CAL trip? Are they going to leave Brassard out here with the Kings or Ducks?
Jason Mackey
2:17
Ha. I am making the trip. I can't speak to the second part. ... Don't think the Kings would have interest. Could see the Ducks possibly, though. That makes sense.
Ebert Morknorkman
2:17
Who would have thought this time last year that ANYONE in Pittsburgh would be missing Hagelin but as you mentioned I think there is something to that with Geno and it does seem we miss his speed, any chance of a reunion? Havent heard much about how he is doing in LA.
Jason Mackey
2:17
He's hurt. Has been for a while. But, yeah, I think they've missed him a lot.
JB
2:18
If the priority is a center for Phil and they're going to depart from giving meaningful responsibility to younger players - which they have in the past with success - isn't St. Louis looking more like a seller every day, and don't they have a guy named Bozak who seems to be able to play well with Kessel?  Not that he's exactly ripping it up at the moment, either, though...
Darius Kasparaitis
2:18
Is this team too soft?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I would make a call, but the contract -- as we went through last week -- is onerous. St. Louis would have to eat some if I was going to entertain that. I don't think it's terribly likely, to be honest with you.
I don't think so. They've won 11 of 17, Darius. Doing just fine.
Eddie Shack
2:19
For everyone who keeps mentioning Brassard's value, he has none to the team he is currently on - honestly I'd ride it our with Sheahan at 3C Brassard has really done nothing but mope and get injured since he's been here.  And Jason, to your comment, does he not like it here because of minutes he's getting or because he just thinks he's better than he is?
Jason Mackey
2:19
I think both of those are probably true, Eddie.
Dave

It was great to see the pens play a good game here in Raleigh so be sure to tell Sid thanks for the early Christmas gift. More of an observation than a question : when they choose to play the right way, they are extremely difficult to beat.  When there are fewer chances, I think the pens skill becomes an even greater advantage. When they play loose, they give less talented teams the chance to score easy goals,  which negates their scoring talent advantage.
