I couldn't begin to tell you. It's like a phrase you must memorize as a Penguins fan: "All our bad players for all of your good players."

If we still had Hainsey or  Daley back do you think we would have the issues we're having on defense.
Jason Mackey
2:51
I think Daley would help more than Hainsey. Daley was very good at helping them get out of their own end. ... And was probably a better defender than he got credit for. When, of course, he was healthy.

Besides a third line center, do you see the pensguins perhaps getting a Deffenseman who is more of a top 5 level D ?
Jason Mackey
2:51
One thing at a time, but yes, I do think they'll probably add another defenseman at some point.

Hey Jay just wondering when do you think Pens will make a trade deal? Any perspective who the front runners are? Will we ever see Sprong this year? Is there really intrest of Letang being traded? Thank you Sir
Jason Mackey
2:53
That's like 20 questions, man. ... Kidding. ... Soon if they lose tonight. ... Brassard, Pageau, Haula, Bozak and Marchessault all make a lot of sense. ... Yes, soon, especially with a loss tonight. ... They're not trading Kris Letang. Whew.

I know you asked Sullivan about whether he's talked to Crosby about shooting the puck more. Have you asked Sid about it directly (whether he's aware that he's shooting less frequently than last year, and if so, if it's something he wants to change)?
Jason Mackey
2:53
I have not. Have not a chance. I do want to, in the proper time and setting to try and get the captain's honest thoughts.

Why are readers treating Daniel Sprong like he's the second coming of JJ#68.  The guy is a disappointment, with the bottom 6 the Pens roll out on a nightly basis, he should have been on the roster from day 1.  He's a prospect.....that's it.
Jason Mackey
2:53
I believe Daniel Sprong just walked on water.
THE Phil Kessel
2:53
Do I seem happier than last season? My stats are better so
Jason Mackey
2:54
Wouldn't know, sorry.

Are the pens interested in Maroon or Kane? There seems to be a hole on the LW on Genos line.
Jason Mackey
2:55
I think they would consider them. Maroon is an intriguing option if they think they're going to lose Hornqvist. Balances out the depth chart a bit. ... Kane I think the cost would be too high, the personality ... not sure it fits. I think they've followed and maybe had some casual chats, but I just don't know if I see a fit.

Purely for fun speculation: Ian Cole and Kessel for Patches and Galchenyuk... would you pull the trigger on this trade?
Jason Mackey
2:55
Yes, I would. Can you imagine Phil in Montreal? Oh, boy.
Mikey
2:55
Thanks for your insight Jason. Do you think if Leighton hadn’t been hurt he’d be the one called up instead of DeSmith? I saw the last WBS game vs Lehigh Valley and DeSmith was a HUGE difference in them not being blown out. Even the LV coach said as much. How do you think PIT views their AHL goalies?
Jason Mackey
2:55
Yes, I do. I think that's why they got Leighton, as an upgrade over DeSmith.

Why did the pens play Archibald so sparingly? Especially with Reaves playing on the 4th line. To my understanding, Reaves is basically playing as a Crosby/Malkin insurance policy, so then why play him in games against say, Arizona or Vancouver?
It's not like a game where you have Dubinsky or Wilson or Clutterbuck coming after him. It's not a rivalry...Apologies if this has been answered previously.
Jason Mackey
2:56
Good question, Adam. Not sure. Always wondered that myself. They like Reaves in the lineup, what he brings. I would have rested him against non-physical teams and given Archibald more games.

2:57
Now I’m just really confused. Matt Gatjka said Letang is being shopped. You and Josh Yohe say he’s not. How can anyone make accurate assessments when there is conflicting “source attained” information??
Jason Mackey
2:57
I can't speak for Gajtka. I can only speak for myself. I reported all along -- starting in 20 Thoughts -- that no trade had been brought to Letang's camp.

This team stinks.....time to trade 87 and 71 for draft picks and fire HCMS and GMJR.  The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
Jason Mackey
2:58
Seems about right. You forget that Daniel Sprong is better than Gordie Howe.
Steven
2:58
My apologizes that I wasn't clear, I didn't think it meant Letang, but rather Cole as it came on the heels of the Oleksiak deal.
Jason Mackey
2:58
Thank you for clarifying.

I saw a stat that the pens are 4-11 without Schultz. That's pretty telling if you ask me how important and valuable he has become. My question is, is he a #1 dman on teams?
Jason Mackey
2:59
I don't think. That's nothing against Schultz, but I think part of the reason he's been good is because he hasn't had to shoulder the No. 1 load. I like Justin a lot, but he's not Erik Karlsson or Drew Doughty. He'd probably be the first to tell you that.
JT
2:59
Speaking of GMJR, when he first arrived, the mention was a couple years...a couple years later he's still seemingly going strong.  Any indications on when he'll hang it up and who would be in line to replace him?
Jason Mackey
2:59
No indications. He likes his job. His son's into it. They're winning. It's a family thing. He could be around for a bit more. Wouldn't shock me at all.

What's your favorite away city?
Jason Mackey

Top five (and thank you for asking a non-hockey question): VAN, WSH, SJ, NYR and MTL.

A left-handed D-man who is comfortable playing right side (Oleksiak) - that seems like a really special skill. I would think there's a good bit of technique that is different when your stick is to the ice side rather than the board side, especially if you have to switch back and forth from game to game or shift to shift. Or is it really not that big of a thing?
Jason Mackey
3:01
For some guys it is, for some it's not -- where your stick is positioned, shooting, accepting passes, etc.
SCOTT
3:01
How long does a typical trade take to complete? The GMs know what the teams need or are looking for?
Jason Mackey
3:01
There's no cookie-cutter formula, Scott. They're all different.

I see some folks have had 3+ questions replied to - while mine from about 30 minutes ago isn't showing up. Seemed like a reasonable question to me. I guess I don't understand how this works...
Jason Mackey
3:02
Jonah, it's showing on my end that I've answered every question. If you asked it, chances are it didn't get through. Please do it again. I don't ignore any questions that are clean.

As we have seen, there is no market for centers. Can a Hoffman or Pacioretty fall into our lap? Are they on JR’s radar?
