They are, but it's going to take a decent chunk to get the guys you're talking about. A lot could depend on the market for them and how competitive the Penguins could be.
Ron

I'll take the Hagelin, Sprong and a 1st for Hoffman posted above and change it around a little: Do you think the Penguins could pull off Brassard for that package? Brassard would probably be cheaper and easier to acquire than Hoffman I'd imagine.
Jason Mackey

Yay, more judging fictitious trade offers time! ... I don't think it's enough, FYI.

If i was interested in being a hockey writer, what are the steps to doing so? (Given that I have the hockey intelligence to do so)
Jason Mackey

Go to school for it, get a job out of college covering preps somewhere small, work you butt off, put off having a life, work your butt off more, move up, still no life, learn journalism and the importance of reporting as opposed to being a fan, still have no live, move up, keep working ... should be something like that.

Do you think now with the injuries on D that the pens will wait to trade cole? Also if you had to guess, when will a trade happen
Jason Mackey
3:04
I'll say Jan. 14. Does that sound good? Yes, I think it's hard to do it now with so many people hard.
Steven
3:04
Would it be possible for you to do some digging with Sam Ventura and do a piece on how analytics is used to evaluate players/what analytics they use? I'd be interested to see that and I think it'd be a good read given that the Penguins have pretty strong analytics despite not getting results.
Jason Mackey
3:04
I would love to. Won't happen, though. They're SO secretive with that stuff. Don't blame them, either.

You aren't getting off-topic questions today - I think that must mean hockey season is finally heating up!!
Jason Mackey
3:05
Daniel Sprong, fictitious trade stuff and imaginary timelines. It's what we do.

So, how do you shake anything up if you're not willing to deal anything significant and have limited cap space?
Jason Mackey
3:05
You could trade Cole. He's acquirable and would send a message.
Jim
3:05
Have you noticed some fatigue with geno? He doesnt seem like the same offensive threat as last year.
Jason Mackey
3:05
I've had zero issues with Geno's game of late.

You're the man, get to every question and you are respectful to the readers, appreciate everything you do.
Jason Mackey
3:06
That might be going a little far, but I feel like if you guys are gracious enough to spend some time with me, the least I can do is answer.
SL

Conspiracy theory: do you think a GM would ever start trade rumors about his own player, just to get that player's attention? For example, whisper to another GM, who whispers to a Canadian media personality about Tanger, and then the Pens can come in a few days later (after the rumor has reached the player) and deny any intention to trade?
Jason Mackey
3:07
I think those are some serious mental jumping jacks, but who knows. Sometimes GMs are some odd types. I don't think that's what GMJR is doing here, I really don't.
JN

With oleksiak here, is the reaves experiment over? Would be nice to have a 4th line that actually produces. Reaves also cant do much playing only 4 minutes a game..
Jason Mackey
3:07
I don't think so. I think it could be if Oleksiak shows some muscle, plays well enough, and they get an offer. But it's too soon to say that.

Is it possible in the playoffs that reaves will only play if its a series in which we are getting physically abused like last year against columbus?
Jason Mackey
3:08
You'd think. But the way the Penguins are with him, feels like he's here. Every chance they get, they insist they're happen, all is well. Have to think it's no longer an "experiment."

Not to beat a dead horse, or anything, but do you get the sense that the team regards Letang's issues this year as kind of an inevitable consequence of changing his style to play a less risky game?  For me at least, he looks like a guy who's thinking too much, rather than playing instinctively, and it's still too early to tell if Letang 2.0 will be effective or not.
Jason Mackey
3:09
Nah, I don't think his issues are connected to what they've asked of him. I think they're connected to the time off, the brutal early-season schedule and the need for Letang to just get away from it. He's a bit of a mental mess right now. I'm not even sure he's hurt, to be honest with you. Just needs to get away.

Sullivan has been inconsistent with the lines this year. With that said what about pairing Sid with Sheary and Guentzel. Malkin with Phil and Haglien. I say this because playing Hags with Geno would give him more scoring opportunities.
Jason Mackey
3:09
I don't disagree. I like those lines. I just think Sully needs to STICK WITH THEM for, like, more than 7 minutes.

Can you tell Crosby that I love him? Thanks!
Jason Mackey

Will make sure to do that tonight.

Why on earth would a GM go to the camp of a player just to say, hey - we're thinking about trading you? We don't have anything on the table, but we're listening...
Jason Mackey
3:10
Out of respect for what the player has meant to that organization.

Favorite non Grateful Dead band? Subquestion, favorite current band?
Jason Mackey

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Same answer for both. Seeing him in January at Heinz Hall. Can't wait.

Follow up to NjPensFan question: has JR ever shared in one of your sit-downs that there's a player from last year that he wishes he'd held on to?
Jason Mackey
3:11
No. And he probably won't do that. I think that makes his current ones look kinda bad, don't you?
SL
3:11
I'm not sure if my prior question got through, so I'll try again. Do you think there's any chance JR started the trade rumors about Letang, just to get his attention?
Jason Mackey
3:11
No, I don't. Jim is fundamentally a good human being. Letang has a family, a kid, another on the way. That's a hell of a message to send, to scare someone like that.
JT

best "quick: just the juicy" story from the locker room.  Go
Jason Mackey

I'm not sure what you're asking.

In your 20 thoughts, you talked about how Rutherford wasn't happy that Malkin, Crosby and Letang were mixing it up against Columbus as he had acquired Reaves. Was he unhappy with Reaves for seemingly not protecting them, or was he unhappy with the stars for getting engaged?
