What was the purpose of the last trade the Pens made involving the AHL level guys?
Jason Mackey
2:16
It's just re-arranging chairs in the minors. Depth stuff. Nothing huge.

I know it’s a little early, but who do you think gets exposed for the Seattle expansion?
Jason Mackey
2:16
Yes, it's very early. Like 2 years too early. Give me a week without a billion Sprong questions, then maybe we'll tackle that one.

2:16
Do you know if Jarry is getting the start tonight?
Jason Mackey
2:16
It's DeSmith.

Dominik Simon is on pace for 41 points and most of his production is coming at ES. Last season, Crosby only scored 51 of his points at ES. Do you think people have gaudy unrealistic expectations for point totals and what is good?
Jason Mackey
2:17
I don't know about that, but I do think Simon has been perfectly fine. I don't question Sullivan using him with Crosby if he's going to use Hornqvist with Malkin and keep trying Phil with Brassard to see what's there.

Why do fans of this team not appreciate the elite players they have (say, Kris Letang) and try to run him out of town? Do they not care that he’s having a Norris quality season?
Jason Mackey
2:17
I think they care. I think there's been a pretty good change in fan sentiment regarding Letang.

At work we've had luncheons with a nacho bar, with pizza, and with doughnuts.  What's your preference?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I'm going pizza every day of the week. Crust in Upper St. Clair or Fiori's in Brookline, please.

Hypothetically, If Kessel were traded do you think it’s more likely that it’s for a forward or defenseman?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I think it's way too early to tell. I think the most likely -- and smartest -- scenario is not trading Phil at all.
Carolina Jim

Will I ever win a trade again?
Jason Mackey
2:18
Yes, Jim.

Do you think the Capitals showed teams how to defend Pens PP by focusing on Kessel and it seems that since then it has been a struggle?
Jason Mackey
2:19
I don't think so. I think many of their issues right now are self-inflicted. They get too cute. It's not the first time this problem has surfaced with these guys.

Do you agree that GMJR should not be looking to trade any more draft piks even if the team starts winning.  Pretty thin in WBS.
Jason Mackey
2:19
Yeah, I think he should try to preserve those, if at all possible. In 3-4 years -- still in the current window, they hope -- those picks could turn out to mean something. And, yeah, they don't have much down there.

Do you agree that GMJR should refrain from trading future picks, even if the Pens start winning?  Getting thin in WBS and the future is starting to look bleak.

If patience is a virtue, who was more virtuous:  Sprong as he awaited more ice time or Sullivan as he awaited Sprong to meet his standards?
Jason Mackey

Yeah, I think he should try to preserve those, if at all possible. In 3-4 years -- still in the current window, they hope -- those picks could turn out to mean something. And, yeah, they don't have much down there.
Weird question. I'm not sure it's necessary to pick one over the other.

Do you think there would be a possibility of trading Brassard for Bonino?  I don't think Bonino is doing as well down there as he did here so it could be a win win!
Jason Mackey
2:20
Only if Nashville would be willing to eat money, and I don't think it would.

I think it's entirely unfair to suggest Sullivan moved away from playing youth. He played Simon last year, who was at the same stage (final year of ELC) as Wilson, Kuhnhackl and Rust. He played ZAR earlier. He played Guentzel earlier. Why is there a perception that Sullivan hates youth now because he didn't like Sprong doing nothing offensively and being deficient defensively?
Jason Mackey
2:21
That's fair, Steven. I think the point was more trying guys like Blueger and Di Pauli.

Do the pens have interest in Bonino reunion  and why are they shopping Maatta and Murray fleury swap
Jason Mackey
2:21
They're not shopping Maatta, first. Being open and shopping are different, and the second part of that is just ridiculous.

do you think alot of Brassard's struggles are him just not wanting to be here?  when you see and hear him in interviews, he just doesn't seem to be very excited about anything.  He seems down.
Jason Mackey
2:22
Yeah, I'm not sure he does. I worry that he doesn't have a complete comfort in his role, and I think that's something management is monitoring.

Hi Jason... I am a Maatta fan... just wanted you to know there are some of us out there :)  And speaking of Maatta, he cracks me up when they show him on the bench during the game... he is so serious!
Jason Mackey
2:23
He is very serious. We see that every day in how hard he works.

Isn’t part of a coach/managements job to make the pieces fit?  I mean, once the talent is evaluated and assuming you have made good decisions in that aspect, isn’t it incumbent upon the coach/manager to try to find ways for those players to be successful?  You’re not always going to like you’re co-workers/superiors/subordinates but you have to find a way to get the job done and find success, no?  Why does it seem like if anybody’s in Sullys doghouse, they’re the problem and not him?  And yea, yea I’ve heard the 2 cups in 3 years appeal to authority already...
Jason Mackey
2:23
Yeah, it's Sullivan's job to fit the pieces together. But he's going to do it how he sees fit, and the results have mostly been there. ... Could he be more flexible? Sure. But you can say that about a lot of NHL coaches.
