I could use something lighthearted to talk about after last night's loss… is it true Crosby is a big fan of the old tv show Friends? He mentioned it in an interview probably a decade or so ago now.
Jason Mackey
11:30
I am not aware of this. Can you send along the interview? That's hilarious if it's indeed the case.
Pope

Do you start flower or Murray in game 4? I go with the Flower. The defense is responsible for at least 3 of the first 4 goals last night. Flower may have had bad positioning on the wrap around goal, but there again the D should have been in position to prevent that goal as well.
Jason Mackey
11:31
I totally agree, Pope. With every single thing you said. Starting Murray would have an effect on the room, trust me. It's nothing against Matt. I don't think benching Marc would go over well at all.
Pope
11:31
What are the chances we get Horny, Shultz and Rust back for game 4?
Jason Mackey
11:32
Pretty good, honestly. I think they're close. If they're with the group today -- they practice at 1:15, and I think those three will be with the group -- I I think they'll play Friday.

Hi Jason, always appreciate your insight. Two questions : what time is Pens practice today, and what do you think is going on with our whole team looking snakebit when it comes to scoring more than one goal? Anderson didn't look this good in the Rangers series. Are our boys just exhausted, too injured, or gripping their sticks too tight?
Jason Mackey
11:33
Practice is at 1:15. A little bit of all three, honestly. But I don't think "too exhausted" or "too injured." They just need to do more to get in front of Anderson, shoot more, generate offense from closer to the goal, all of that stuff. It's doable, but it's going to require more of an effort than they gave last night.
Pope
11:33
Why have the pens started the majority of the games slow in the playoffs this spring? Over confidence? Lack of leadership? Fatigue?
Jason Mackey
11:33
Not sure. I think if I had that answer I would offer it up to Sullivan and his staff for some serious cash.
JC
11:34
Obviously the 7 Dman thing did not work out yesterday, but do you think Streit found himself in the lineup next game if Schultz is unable to go.
Jason Mackey
11:34
Nah, I think they'll stick with six and use 12 forwards. But it's just not Schultz. I think you'll have Rust or Hornqvist back. Probably both. And I wouldn't bump Wilson or Rowney, which you would have to do. Also, I think it's a moot point because I think Schultz will play in Game 4.

Who is the best player in the Pens minor league system and how good is he/she as compared to other top minor leaguers?
Jason Mackey
11:36
Probably Daniel Sprong. Although it's tough to compare him with AHL guys because he spent this past season in the QMJHL, basically scoring a goal a game. Put it this way: It's going to take a lot for Sprong NOT to be with the NHL club out of camp next season. Good chance he earns a top-six job, too. Not many minor league guys are on that sort of trajectory.

In the conference finals, the last twelve times a team has taken a 2-1 lead in the series, that team has gone on to win the series 10 of the 12 times. Is the writing on the wall?
Jason Mackey
11:37
I walked around much of Canadian Tire Centre last night -- not my choice, the press-box-to-media-work-room journey is a long one. I saw no such verbiage.

Do you think Malkin is falling back into his bad habits (bad penalties, lackadaisical play, etc.)?
Jason Mackey
11:39
I don't. If for no other reason than it's pretty much standard-issue for Malkin to take a few dumb, reactionary penalties. You take the good with the bad. There's been way more good than bad. I don't think Malkin was lackadaisical or has been lackadaisical. Could he be more careful with the puck? Sure. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong here and should expect Malkin to be more of a defensive force. But when a guy can skate like him, make plays in the offensive zone the way that he can, I'm not looking at him and telling him to be a defense-heavy guy. Frankly, I don't care what he doesn't defensively. Just be smarter with the puck.

I've read that Ottawa isn't really doing much on the ice in between games while it seems as thought the Penguins are having practive frequently. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
11:40
Yeah, it doesn't seem Guy Boucher has much use for morning skates or practices. God bless him. I don't think it's playing a factor, honestly. If anything, I think the Penguins have more stuff to work on than Ottawa right now. I don't think 30 minutes of practice is the reason the Penguins were ineffective last night.
dave
11:41
Do you have any theories on the slow starts in the playoffs? Sullivan doesn't seem to have any answers for it.
Jason Mackey
11:41
As I said earlier, if I did, I'd try to make some money off of it.

Who will start in net in the next matchup?
Jason Mackey
11:41
I think Fleury.
Mark
11:41
Jason, not that it would have mattered but what did you think of the decision to dress an extra defenseman, Streit, instead of the 12th forward, Kuhnnackl?
Jason Mackey
11:42
I thought it was a moot point last night, for one. Would have been bad either way. If Sullivan sticks with it and scratches Wilson or Rowney when Rust or Hornqvist comes back, then I'll have an issue. I think it's going to be a one-off, though. And I thought it was a minor detail in the scheme of things.

Do you notice an egregious amount of interference not being called in this series, as was common in the Devil's trap heyday? Not to make excuses, that was a thrashing. Speaking of, do you think "Friend of the Devil" loses some luster in slower versions? I think being uptempo adds to the desperation of the character. I'd trade 20 bills for some back checking.
Jason Mackey
11:43
Hahaha. Nice Grateful Dead tie-in. And I do like the faster versions of FOTD. Hockey-wise, yes, there have been some bad missed interference calls. That's also hardly unique to this series, sad as it is for me to type that.

When the camera caught Kessel screaming on the bench in game 2, what do you think he was complaining about?
Jason Mackey
11:44
Which time? Ha. He yells a lot. Can be anything. From an official, an opposing player, to how he wanted the puck and didn't get it. A lot of things.

Definitely could see MAF was rattled after the soft goals, regardless of the defense. I suggest letting MM start next game to give MAF a day off and state he will start game 5 at home. Nothing to lose here, if MM stinks it up put MAF back in. He deserves to start but also deserves a day off to clear his head.
Jason Mackey
11:45
What, then, if Matt Murray pitches a shutout? I think it you start Murray, you need to commit to him regardless. Unless, of course, he stinks. But I think removing Fleury at this point is unnecessarily harsh and unappreciative of what he's done to get this team here, one that hasn't played particularly well at times and would probably be sitting at home if not for Fleury.

I think Sid's playing with a mild concussion. Also, all of the Pens are showing the effects of too many hits and good checks while not doing the same.
Jason Mackey
11:46
I really hope -- and do not think -- the Penguins would do that with an asset the level of Sidney Crosby. Is Sid banged up? I'm sure he is. They all are. He might be a little hesitant, too, to go to those areas, but that's not a medical issue.

Um, Jason. One of your readers might want to rethink his Pens nicknames. His nickname for Hornqvist is downright inappropriate.
Jason Mackey
11:46
It's what his teammates call him.

The discussion to not start MAF shouldn't even be discussed. There are much other things that need improved. Doumolin and Cole were very poor last night. The forwards need to play with passion. It would be nice to see Kunitz do anything offensively.
Jason Mackey
11:47
If you're going to be rational, Mike, I'm not sure there's a place for you in the NHL playoffs.
