Would it make sense for the Penguins to move Feaves before the deadline. I love having him, but with the healthy scratches and low minutes I think it’s doubtful he returns next season. Do you think they try to move him?
Jason Mackey
1:38
They would have to get decent return. I don't think they would be against it, Chad, but they wouldn't do it just to do it. Given how this year has gone, and the way the NHL is trending, I can't imagine teams are clamoring for Ryan Reaves right now.

Jason, Saw the news today about John Perry Barlow and thought of you instantly. Can you say a few words about what he meant to the Dead and what a great man and father he was?  THanks, bro. Keep on Truckin!
Jason Mackey
1:38
Didn't know a ton about JPB personally. Did love a lot of his writing, though. He wasn't Hunter, but who is? A very important piece to latter-day Dead.

Settle a bet Jason - My wife says you were an extra in a Jean Claude Van Damme film, but I say that makes ZERO sense. What is the truth? If I win, I get a new fishing pole. If she wins, we have to go see Smashmouth in concert! YUCK!

Better start remembering the lyrics to "All-Star." Me, my dad and stepmom went to one of the extra shoots at Civic Arena. My dad got picked to be one of the dudes holding a board or whatever it was when JCVD ran through the crowd. Don't know if the shots ever made it, though. You could win on a technicality.

Do you think the Penguins would have any interest in claiming either Jooris or Kruger off waivers to add to their center depth?
Jason Mackey
1:42
I don't. Kruger makes too much. Don't know why they'd grab Jooris. A struggling player on the Hurricanes going to the two-time defending Cup champs who've won 11 of 15. Doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

In this very chat, last summer I predicted that the Golden Knights would be a good team this year and you poo-pooed the idea completely. Care to eat crow now and apologize, Mr. Mackey...if that is your real name?
Jason Mackey
1:42
It is, and I will. I thought they would struggle. I was wrong. Absolutely. Excellent call by you.

Too bad about the death of John Parrie Barlow. In your opinion, what is the choicest lyrical nugg he ever wrote?    For me it has to be Mexicali Wind.
Jason Mackey
1:44
Is that like a cross between Mexicali Blues and Black-Throated Wind? Ha. I'll go "Cassidy" and "We Can Run."

Can the PENGUINS 3-PEAT?    SAY "YES"
Jason Mackey

Yes.

Lately, DK SPorts has been getting a lot of bad press nationally. My friend is thinking of applying there. Can you share a bit about some of the mental and verbal abuse you suffered while under their employ? I'm hoping your experience will help my friend to see that she shouldn't work at DK Sports. Thank you, Jason.

Not saying anything negative about my former employer, especially not here. I work at the Post-Gazette. I love it. Paper treats me very well. I'm not about to embarrass myself or it. Best of luck to your friend. ... I will say -- because I think transparency is important here -- that Dejan and I are friendly at PPG Paints Arena, and I ignored interview requests for the Deadspin story. I've moved on, wish no ill-well toward Dejan or his site and would simply like to focus on my work here. Thanks.

Jason, when you travel covering the Penguins and you happen to go to a state where marijuana is legal, I'm sure you love to catch a buzz and go to a jam band bar or something like that. What is the choicest state to cover the NHL in due to its very kind rules regarding the magical herb? Rock on, fellow dead header!
Jason Mackey

Don't smoke, sorry. Actually had a conversation with Dana Heinze about this recently. About how we both barely drink when listening to the Dead, wanting to experience the music our own way.

Who are the top 3 players in the NHL currently, in order?  THanks. GO PENS
Jason Mackey
1:52
This is really hard. Crosby and McDavid are there. I can punish Sid for a slow start point-wise. But how do you not include Kucherov, who leads the league in points? Or Kessel for how darn good he's been. Or D men like Doughty, Hedman and Karlsson. This one has me, not gonna lie.

Do think the Pens Call up Sprong with all the current injured players for tomorrow?
Jason Mackey
1:52
No. I think he would've been here today for practice.
INFO NEEDED!
1:52
Are any current NHL players competing in the Olympics this year or are they all staying with their NHL teams?
Jason Mackey
1:52
They're not allowed. Staying with their teams.
Better
1:52
Based on what you've heard, do you think the Penguins will make any trades before the deadline?  If so, will it just be minor tinkering or a significant change?
Jason Mackey
1:52
I think they will do something, but I think it will be minor. Potentially adding a fourth-line center.
1:53
Without sending any out, about $500,000. GMJR likes to keep about $1 million in reserve. They have $1.4 million in space right now. Could bend a little there, but not much on the reserve.
Numbers Game
1:53
I've seen different numbers on how much salary the Penguins can add at the trade deadline, given their current payroll and NHL rules.  What's your best guess at the number?

I'm interested in what is going on with Justin Schultz.  Last year he could not be stopped.  This year he has dealt with injury and hasn't really been noticeable since he's been back.  That's probably a good thing but I wonder if he has been shooting less or is still injured or has been covering for his other defensemen?  Thanks for any feedback.

Tampa and Boston biggest headaches getting out of the East ? How do you rate the West...Nashville Winnipeg Vegas ??
Jason Mackey
1:58
He's not attempting a bunch less shots, although some. He's also not getting as much power-play time. I think there's some legitimacy to the injury stuff; he hasn't been able to get in much of a rhythm. Then you have the partner. He's traditioally been better with Ian Cole than Olli Maatta, and I'm surprised they haven't gone back to that yet.
1:59
I would put Vegas ahead of both of them, honestly. Maybe Vegas, Nashville and Winnipeg.
Glass half empty

The Penguins are second in their division but they've played 2 or 3 more games than the first, third, fourth and fifth place teams.  Some of those teams will move past the Penguins when the number of games evens up.  There's still a lot of ground to make up.
Jason Mackey
1:59
I'm not sure I understand your question.

How long until Matt Murray passes Marc Andre Fleury talent wise?
Jason Mackey

Are you looking for an exact number of years? I also considered talent something you had or didn't.

Are the Pens in danger of losing another goaltender in the Seattle expansion draft? And if so which would the Pens protect Murray or Jarry?
Jason Mackey
2:00
They could be. They would protect Murray. He's their No. 1. He's won two Cups. Simple as that.

is it possible that the Pens select Bode Wilde in the draft this year? he's a solid player from U of Michigan. Are you hearing any rumors regarding the draft/scouting?
