Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 2.8.18

I think it's a little early for that, but I have been encouraged by his play. Think about what a third-line center is counted upon to do. Sheahan does all of that stuff except score goals. But if he's able to help that line produce offense, then I think they could live with his lack of goal-scoring, especially if he's able to function with Kessel.

How likely do you think it is that Matt Cullen returns to Pittsburgh in a trade, this season (obviously)
Jason Mackey
2:12
I think it's pretty likely.

Are players of my ilk going by the wayside like fullbacks in the NFL?  What happened to the NHL in the last 3 years?
Jason Mackey
2:13
I don't think so. Look at Hornqvist. He's about to earn a serious contract. I think those types do have to be on good teams, with players who can generate some offense for them.
Logan
2:13
Can you see GMJR making a move more Pacioretty or Kane? What assets would we have to move if so?
Jason Mackey
2:15
I think the prices are too high. For Kane I believe it's an NHL player, a first-round pick, a high-level prospect and another pick/prospect. One, that doesn't work financially. Two, I don't think it makes sense for them. Believe the Pacioretty ask is similarly high.

Jason, your chats used to be way more interesting. You have yet to mention John Parry Barlow. You should have led off with that, bud!
Jason Mackey
2:15
This is the fourth time that has been brought up.

Although Hagelin has been playing better as of late. Do you see him being bought out this offseason if his goal scoring stays so low? 4 million a year for (I️ think) 12 goals over a 100 game period is not conducive to a happy balance sheet.
Jason Mackey
2:16
Hagelin doesn't have to score goals to have value ... but he does have to score more than the two he had at one point earlier this year. He adds value by creating turnovers, killing penalties, playing good defense, working off his linemates. $4 million might be a little high, but the way he's played of late, there's definite value there.
Logan
2:16
Who plays 4C tomorrow? Simon? Dress 7D?
Jason Mackey
2:17
Believe it's going to be Teddy Blueger.
2:18
Or at least it looks like he's getting recalled. If they don't go Blueger, probably Sheahan with Guentzel moving to 3C. Or Rowney if he's healthy. Not Simon. Sully doesn't like him there.
Karl
2:18
If Hagelin can just turn it on after Christmas, why not turn it on in october?
Jason Mackey
2:18
A fair point. Not that easy, though, Karl.
Alex
2:18
What do you think is the max amount of assets (roster players, prospects, picks, etc) that GMJR is willing to move at the deadline?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I don't think there's a set number to say ____ . Every situation is different.

If the pens can’t get Callen do they have a plan B?
Jason Mackey
2:18
In that case, I'd like to see them get Cullen.
Joe D.
2:18
Any chance the Pens waive Hunwick for the purpose of sending him down to WBS to free up some cap space for acquisition of a 3C/4C?
Jason Mackey
2:19
Hunwick is on a one-way deal. He'd make the same amount of money in WBS.

Do you like Rust as one of Crosby's wingers? It seems like he has the speed and forechecking ability to really complement the Kid. Thanks for doing these chats and answering our questions! If any of mine are redundant, I apologize, but I'm sure you're very used to it unfortunately.
Jason Mackey
2:19
I do. More important, Crosby does, for the speed Rust brings. To play with Sid, you have to be able to skate. Rust could stand to finish more, but he has been doing that of late.

Pageau for Sprong and a 2nd
Jason Mackey
2:20
Ottawa wouldn't do it.
Guest
2:20
Pageau for Sprong, 2nd. Fair deal?
Jason Mackey
2:20
No.
Pageau also makes $3.1 million. You've moved no NHL salary and are appropriately $1.7 million over the cap.
Scott

No offense chat moderator, but so far I have seen nothing but Cole and Sprong questions.  And questions from the same people.  I throw a name out there (who happens to be a Western PA guy), and nothing?  I don't think I will offend anyone with my question about GMJR perhaps trading for Saad.  Quick, Jason... need your hot take on this.
Jason Mackey
2:21
Scott, I answered your question about Saad. I answer every question -- as long as it's not offensive -- in the order it was received. We've had a lot. I'm going as fast as I can. I don't think Saad is a fit because he makes a lot of money ($6 million, I believe) and the fact that he and Hornqvist play similar games.

I saw Guentzel and Rust were on the top line with Crosby today.  Guentzel and Crosby were magic together.  Why has it taken this long to reunite the two?  Guentzel no longer has to play center.
Jason Mackey
2:22
I think they wanted to have Guentzel on the third line to help the offense there. But right now, with injuries, Sullivan seems intent on loading up his top-six. I agree with you. Guentzel should be playing with Crosby. They've been very good together.

2:23
Jason, I know he has been injured but could you see the pens making a run for Chris  Kreider? I think he would be a good fit for the pens system
Jason Mackey
2:23
I don't see that. Rangers wants picks and prospects for a rebuild, but they couldn't fit Kreider under their cap. Couldn't come close. I'm not sure he's worth that hit (4.625 M) either.
Ryan
2:23
I would love the Pens to re-sign Hornqvist. IMO there are not many players in the league that get those dirty goals a team needs to have in the postseason and to have a great pp. Are the Pens have plans on extending him. I think he may be irreplaceable.
Jason Mackey
2:24
They're going to try, Ryan. They have tried. Seems he wants to go to July 1 and see what he can make. I respect that. But I do think the Penguins will do everything they can -- within reason/sanity -- to keep him.
Scott
2:25
Oh look... another Sprong question from someone who has already asked about Cole.  zzzzz....
Jason Mackey
2:25
Scott, I've already answered your question twice now.

In a cage match between Goalie Interference v Icing for the title of least comprehensible/most inconsistently enforced rule, which would you put money on?
