That's actually a tremendous idea. It would have to be summer thing, but I would love to involve Rutherford. He might do it. Just couldn't be in-season.

In your opinion, if Murray gets hurt again and is forced to miss any playoff time, would this team have a prayer?
Jason Mackey
2:41
No. They could maybe win a series, but that's it. Just too much of a dropoff.

Does Sullivan go with Malkin for the PS because he's riding the hot hand?  I go with either Crosby (experience) or Brassard (moral boost).
Jason Mackey
2:42
A morale boost? In a playoff race, third period, trying not to blow a lead, Derick Brassard comes riding in on a white horse? That's something. Believe hot hand was the call.

Do you think at some point they try Bassard with someone else if him and Kessell don't click soon?
Jason Mackey
2:43
I thought that line was pretty good last night. Scored the first goal, no? Generated a bunch before the third-period pothole.

Happy St. Patty’s Day Mr. Mackey.  Brassard hasn’t seemed to find his stride yet.  Any thoughts on what it might take to get him going or find his rhythm with the Pens?  seemed like a stellar move on paper— and I haven’t given up hope— but hasn’t played out that way so far... thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:44
Same to you, Benny. Ottawa to Pittsburgh is as drastic a change as you'll experience in the NHL. They're still trying to beat the Senator out of Brassard, and he's trying to do it to himself. Secondarily, he's trying to develop chemistry with Kessel. That's not easy. Give it time. I know the fan base wants this to work immediately. It takes a bit. And last night was a step in the right direction.

For three-time Stanley Cup winner Mr. Letang to say that they needed to "learn" from last night's third period meltdown is incredible.  There are a number of two and three-time winners on the team.  Your thoughts.  Thanks.
Jason Mackey

Ed, I'm 34. I'm sure many readers in this chat are a lot older than me and encounter things every day at their job that they need to learn from. Happens to me every day in journalism and at the PG. Why should it be any different for Letang? Because he's won a couple Cups he's perfect? Nah.

PK has looked shaky lately.  any thoughts as to why?
Jason Mackey
2:46
Agree there. Getting tugged around the ice a little bit, but it's nothing unique. Gotta finish more clears. Pressure early in shifts, not late and get caught out of position. They've taken more penalties, I believe, and the goaltending has been less. Not a good recipe.

It amazes me that so many fans are so quick to write off the Pens and their chances after the last two years. Infuriating, really. Not really a question, just a comment.
Jason Mackey
2:46
It's the beauty of it, Dave. Winning the Cup after a win, the world's worst team after a loss. Buckle up.
Benny D
2:46
based on Matt Murray’s history it seems like we should expect to see DeSmith and/or Jarry some during the playoffs?  I still worry about goaltending headed into the playoffs (the positive side of Murray’s history notwithstanding)
Jason Mackey
2:46
That's a fair concern, Benny. Although I'll say this: Murray is definitely due for the pendulum to swing the other way.

Do you think Pens will resign Oleksiak, and Sheahan after this season?
Jason Mackey
2:47
Yes, I do. Those are no-brainers at this point.
Kyle
2:47
You, Yohe, Bombulie, Werner, DK, Rossi in an Elimination Chamber match, who comes out on top?
Jason Mackey
2:48
If you got all six of us in the same room -- I don't know what an Elimination Chamber match is, nor do I want to find out -- and televised it, yinz would be the winners, believe me. Ha.
Avi

What are your lineup proposals?
Jason Mackey
2:49
I'm happily married, thanks.
Avi
2:49
What are the odds that Sprong plays in the NHL playoffs?
Jason Mackey
2:49
Not good, I would think. If he hasn't cracked the lineup by now -- and Jooris and Dea, guys who've been promoted over him, remain in the AHL -- I have a tough time seeing it happen at crunch time.

Do you as a PG columnist volunteer to work these chats?  Or is it a job requirement?
Jason Mackey
2:50
One, I'm a beat writer. Not columnist. We have three columnists: Cook, Collier and Starkey. Secondarily, they encourage them. Not sure if it's required or not, as I would never complain. I love doing them.
Avi
2:50
Do you still believe the Pens should explore trading Kessel? I believe earlier this year you stated Sprong was a cheaper option
Jason Mackey
2:51
I said they could if Sprong worked out. He most certainly has not. So, no, I wouldn't explore trading Kessel.
Avi
2:51
Years later, how great was it that the Pens/Crosby took all that time to heal from his concussions
Jason Mackey
2:51
I didn't cover the team then and can't really comment on the recovery, but I'm happy he's healthy now. I'm glad to see all professional sports teams taking concussions seriously.
dave
2:51
If it was up to Crosby, who would his linemates be?  Guentzel and Sheary?
Jason Mackey
2:52
Probably. With the possible exception of Rust rotating in with Sheary because of the speed factor.
Juju
2:52
Do you see Sprong joining the roster within the next two seasons?
Jason Mackey
2:52
If there's an injury, maybe. If there's not, I doubt it.
Avi
2:52
Who gets the nod in the playoffs if Murray goes down with an injury: DeSmith or Jarry
Jason Mackey
2:52
I think they would go with Jarry based on his big-game experience with the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Avi
2:52
How pathetic is NHL on NBC? Milburry, Mcguire, and this incessant need to spark ratings with gimmicks (i.e., Susan Sarandon in the glass) is, in my opinion, pushing ppl away
Jason Mackey
2:53
I like Pierre. He's a very nice man. But Milbury is a stooge, and that stunt last night was just Mickey Mouse. Makes anybody whose livelihood is tied to hockey cringe. Who thought that was a good idea? Just dumb. Sell the game. Sell your star players. Sell good teams and must-see matchups. How hard is that?

Watched Fleury win his 400th the other day. What a class act he is. Big smile on his face the whole game. Wish we had him back!
