I disagree there. Big time. Sullivan is one of the most competitive people I've ever met. Do you really think he would rather stroke his own ego than win a playoff game?C'mon.

“I beg to differ about that he had a bad year last year.

I don’t think he had a bad year. He was a healthy scratch at the end of the season. I know the reason why.

It wasn’t because of how he was playing,” Rutherford explained.

For those who don't know, this is what Rutherford said about Jack Johnson on July 1 ...

Sorry. Sent accidentally.                         “I beg to differ about that he had a bad year last year.

I don’t think he had a bad year. He was a healthy scratch at the end of the season. I know the reason why.

It wasn’t because of how he was playing,” Rutherford explained.                 Do we know the reason yet, or does Sullivan just love irony?
Jason Mackey

Johnson wasn't playing, as I understand it, because he had fallen out of favor with Torts, who wasn't happy with Johnson's leaked trade request. It had nothing to do with his play, as Rutherford said. Became more of a personal thing.

Time to panic?
Jason Mackey
11:26
I don't think so, no. It was one game. I think the Penguins did a lot of things well. If I'm thinking about this logically, I'm expecting Brian Dumoulin and Kris Letang to bounce back. I'm also not expecting the Islanders to score four goals many more times. Honestly, I think they're fine. There was plenty to like last night, just a few too many glitches.

How was it allowed by the NHL for a playoff game to be played in a rink that is in such terrible condition?  The ice was noticeably bad, pucks taking crazy bounces off the partitions between the glass, and lack of up to date technology for video reviews.
Jason Mackey
11:27
Gotta be careful here because I love Nassau. I don't care if the ice sucks or the replays take awhile or whatever. It's just ... fun. There's not enough fun rinks anymore. They all look the same. They're all corporate. That place was rocking last night. ... They do need to improve the ice, though. That drove down play, in my opinion.

Jason why does this team do so many STUPID things game after game.
Jason Mackey
11:29
Ha. That's a simple question but a good one. I think part of it is personnel. They have guys who want to make skilled plays and do special things. Problem is, in games like last night, that's not always the ingredient you need. Just dump it in, skate, get it back, rinse, wash, repeat. The trick is convincing players to play a boring game sometimes. Sullivan doesn't have an easy job.

If Sid, Malkin, Kessel, and Guentzel could each have an individual goal scoring song like baseball players/fighters get walkout songs; what would they be (or what you'd want them to be)?
Jason Mackey
11:33
I would pick Sid to go with Tim McGraw. Something like "I Like It, I Love It." ... Malkin would probably be some sort of weird rap/dance thing I've never heard of ... or probably anyone else in the United States has heard of, for that matter. Kessel, that's the million-dollar one. Would have to be funny, right? I feel like "Walking on Sunshine" would work. Maybe Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" or Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe."

Along the "stupid things" line ... when the team adheres to Sullivan's system, really good things tend to happen. Why is the team seemingly so insistent on so often NOT adhering to Sullivan's system? Is it a coaching problem or a player-leadership problem?
Jason Mackey
11:34
I think it's a human-being problem. Nobody, in any walk of life, adheres 100 percent all the time to what their boss tells them to do. Either they think they have a better idea or want to it differently. The Penguins are no different. It just so happens that their office is in a rather public place. Trust me, what you see with them is hardly unique among professional sports franchises. And it drives coaches nuts.

Hi Jason, love the chats.  Couple quick points; interested in your take on them: 1) seems Pens take a game or 2 to adjust to defensive-style teams (see; Ottawa, Nashville).  2) Perspective: Pens lose Gm 1, on the road, in overtime, to a team that was giddy for the playoffs after such a  long wait.  If the Pens can lose in OT while not playing their best hockey, that has to be seen as a positive.  Thanks!
Jason Mackey

You're way too logical to be here, first off. Secondarily, you bring up a lot of really good points. I just don't understand the massive freakout over one game.

Am i the only one that thinks Rust and Maatta are playing with a whole lot of apprehension. Maatta is just getting out hustled in the corners and Rust is thinking way too much in getting hurt.  You can never play on the edge when you let fear dictate your play.
Jason Mackey
11:38
I think it's hard to make that assertion when you don't know what's going on inside their brains. I sure as heck don't. I don't think you do, either. They've certainly made mistakes. Criticize those all you want. Rust needs to score more than he has recently. Believe one goal in 14, no points in his past six. But you can't tell me you watched the guy(s) play a hockey game on television and you know exactly what's going through their heads.

Do you see Geno righting the ship penalty wise? Didn't see why he was put in the bin yesterday
Jason Mackey
11:39
I thought the officiating left a lot to be desired. They were wildly inconsistent. Geno has been better in that department.

Nothing against Zar but he takes a few games to get going when he comes back from injuries and the playoffs are not the time to do that .  Blueger did not deserve to come out
Jason Mackey
11:39
I agree with you. I expect to see Sullivan get Blueger in for Game 2, either for ZAR or Wilson.

Just want some validation on my thoughts, I was initially pretty upset but in hindsight, most if not all islanders goals came from dumb mistakes, other than that they weren’t given much and we shouldn’t be as worried as Twitter makes it seem?
Jason Mackey
11:39
Yes. The Twitter is an evil website.

Do you the team will be distracted on Sunday knowing that Game of Thrones premieres that day too?
Jason Mackey

I hope not. Isn't GoT at night? (I've never watched an episode. But I am excited to watch the Masters.)

Jason you’re work & knowledge is very much respected.  I appreciate the time & effort you put  into covering this team.  I realize the Pens can’t win every game.  Thanks for letting us vent when we’re frustrated.
Jason Mackey

Ha. My pleasure. Thanks for coming here to do it. I need to be more understanding on where you guys are coming from, too. Never want to make it sound like I'm bashing anyone. Just trying to be a voice of reason here. It ain't that bad

Why wilson over blueger, who brings a lot more to the table?
Jason Mackey
11:41
I don't understand why Blueger was scratched. He's the best offensive and defensive option of the three guys competing for those two final spots.
Joeco

I appreciate the articles about human side of the players
Jason Mackey
11:42
Thanks, Joeco. I like writing them. A really nice change of pace. I just like the variety my job presents, and I've been appreciating that more lately: Chats, notebooks, features, analysis, game stories, video, radio, whatever. There's a lot of different components. But the human-interest features are one of my favorite things to do.

Wow Sid got a lot of hate on his play tonight. I only caught the third period on, so was he really as bad as netizens are saying? Is it really time to worry that he might have been gassed carrying the team to the playoffs, or do you figure chances are he comes back with a vengeance on fri? i’m sure he’s practicing his head off after that loss
Jason Mackey
11:43
What's crazy to me is Sid not getting a pass here. He's been so damn good all season. Even if he played the worst game of his life, so what? It's Game 1 of the first round.

What lines would you like to see Friday? I personally think McCann should be on the first line
Jason Mackey
11:43
I would flip McCann and Rust, Blueger in for Wilson (would stick with ZAR) and leave the other forward spots the same. I'd bring in Johnson for Maatta.

Am I wrong in thinking that the Penguins looked a little scared of the physicality last night, and are often bullied by Trotz teams?
Jason Mackey
11:44
I think you're wrong, Snake. Sorry. They made some mistakes, but I don't think it was because they were "scared." I think they were careless at times.

For all those complaining about the ice, be happy the 1st round wasn't in Brooklyn.  That ice in spring is 100x worse.
