Everything (hockey-related) is worse in Brooklyn.

I loved your articles on the human side of the players (Sully and his son/McCann and his mom).   As a fan you get to appreciate the players more.   Q - how are you able to approach players on those topics and are the willing to open up?
Jason Mackey
11:46
Yes, mostly. You do need to pick your spots. McCann is easy because he's one of the world's nicest people. But generally you wanna make sure a guy is cool with talking about something before you turn the recorder on. You also probably want to arrange time so he's able to compose his thoughts, TV guys don't jump your interview, you can speak in a more relaxed way. Pens media relations is always great about making that happen. And if a guy doesn't want to talk about something, you respect his space.

Big take away from last night was Kessel and malkin looked great .  That is a good sign
Jason Mackey
11:46
Might be the biggest takeaway.

How likely is it that the defense figures out the islanders forecheck tomorrow? Can’t remember seeing a team struggle with pressure that much in a while
Jason Mackey
11:47
Gonna be a huge key. I think Matt Vensel is gonna break that down tomorrow. And it's not just the defense, either. It's a five-man effort. Six in some cases when it involves Murray playing the puck.

I hardly ever hear about what Mark Recchi brings to the coaching table as far as systems and decision making.  Does he have a specific role for game planning?
Jason Mackey
11:48
Recchi brings a lot. I can't sit here and accurately tell you specific roles -- or super specific roles when it comes to game-planning. I do know Recchi does a lot of the prescout stuff with Andy Saucier. Watching teams a couple games out on the schedule, figuring out tendencies, distilling what he sees down into important teaching points. He also works with guys after skates, on individual skills, specifically the forwards. He does plenty.

Will the refs from last night officiate the rest of the series? They were terrible. I get letting them play but a lot of terrible no calls. Dumo hit high, a few slashing calls missed both ways, holding Sid multiple times in OT
Jason Mackey
11:51
Yeah, I agree with you. They missed stuff. They called stuff they shouldn't. Both ways. I'm honestly not sure on that first part. I'm gonna check on it.

I was screaming for Sullivan to not start the top line each period.  It is harder to match up during the flow of play especially in the 2nd period and OT.  Start one of the other three lines and make Trotz adjust.  The other 3 lines dominated their matchups... get some momentum instead of starting each period on your heels.
Brian
11:52
For those of us with Islander fans as friends, can you give me one single comeback line that will quiet them when the chirping starts?
Jason Mackey
11:53
Did you try a mirror? I kid, I kid. ... Let them have their fun. This is cool.
Chuck
11:53
Heard that the Isles were a horrible face off team yet it seemed like they dominated???   Just a bad night for Sid and the guys or Isles play over their heads?
Jason Mackey
11:54
They won 55 percent. Faceoffs are overrated. I don't think it's anything to worry too much about.

Are the Penguins allowed to suit up Sergei Gonchar for Game 2?
Jason Mackey
11:54
I don't think so, but do you really think he would be the Better Man?
BB
11:56
Jason - going to mix it up a little here because all the questions I would have asked have already been answered. Any chance the Pens wear their 3rd jerseys (gold) for a home game this playoffs to match the "gold out" for the fans? Are teams even allowed to wear alternate jerseys in the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
11:57
I don't think you're gonna see that, honestly. And I'll be honest: I don't know the answer off the top of my head. I thought you had to pick one home/road sweater and stick with it. But I can't say I'm 100 percent confident there. I also need to get this finished up and get ready to head over to practice. Sorry.

Do you think Sullivan needs to stop trying to achieve Balance on all three lines and load up the top 6 I.E Kessel with Malkin. Seems like what happened in 2016 with HBK is a hard thing to achieve. Also Why do you think Sullivan keeps taking McCann off the first line they seem to score at least 1 goal per game together doesnt he see that?
Jason Mackey
11:58
I think what Sullivan had last night with his second and third lines worked just fine. Those guys were just great. Although I don't know why he seems averse to keeping McCann on that line. It could have something to do with wanting Jake on the left side.

Jason this is my last thought in today’s chat. I don’t mean to overwhelm. In my earlier question about stupid things I guess it comes down to discipline. Despite all the skill & experience a team needs a certain amount of discipline to succeed. I think this team has too often gotten by on skill & lacks basic fundamental discipline in critical parts of their game.
Jason Mackey
11:59
OK, thank you for the thought and participating. ... I don't disagree with you. I think the Penguins just need to be a little smarter with their decisions.

I agree with you on how crazy it is crosby doesnt get a pass. Why are pens fans so hard on him? Are we too pampered....
Jason Mackey
11:59
Sometimes I think Penguins fans forget what they have, yes.

How can Letang make such a dumb play in overtime ?
Jason Mackey
12:00
He took a risk, Ron. A bad risk. Wasn't the first time he's tried something that was unnecessarily risk.

in a tight game like the islanders play, does home ice provide much of an advantage for the PENS?   for example getting better match ups for SId's line?
Jason Mackey
12:00
Yes, I think that will actually be fairly important, to get that group away from the Islanders fourth line.

Do you think the NHL allows too much "subtle" interference plays to happen during games?  I feel like the Pens have great forechecking players who are constantly interfered with when trying to force turnovers on a D-man. I don't think you can completely remove that part of the game, but sometimes it just seems way too obvious what the player interfering is doing
Jason Mackey
12:00
Yes, I do. But I think it's inherent in officials' eyes at this time of year. It's just gonna happen. I'm not sure that part of the game is ever gonna change. Sadly.

Is Maatta done in Pittsburgh after this season?
Jason Mackey
12:01
I think he's the most tradable asset they have on defense. You're not gonna keep him or Gudbranson. At this point, I have a tough time seeing them get rid of Gudbranson, especially given he's a righty.
RPK

Jason, isn't Sullivan responsible for the paly of his team?  If not, why is he even there?  Maata over Johnson?  Simon over Blueger?
Jason Mackey
12:02
We've been through this, RPK. He's responsible -- but to a point. When a guy makes a stupid play with the puck, do you think that's what Sullivan is coaching him to do? You can put it on Sullivan because the buck stops with him, but how about talking about the guys who are playing the game?

Is there a chance Dumoulin isn’t healthy but is playing regardless because it’s crucial? And will we ever see DeSmith again? Murray has started 23 consecutive games...wheels might fall off soon.
Jason Mackey
12:02
You wanna start DeSmith after Murray had an average game in a one-goal loss in Game 1 of the postseason? Geesh.
Rob
12:02
In your opinion what is the one thing that has to happen for the Pens to win this series? (Aside from scoring more goals obviously)
Jason Mackey
12:03
They need to be more careful with the puck and not giving the Islanders stuff they didn't earn. They literally handed the Islanders the game last night. Eliminate that stuff, and the Islanders don't have enough firepower to beat the Penguis.
