Does Crosby prefer having a lefty or a righty on his RW? Statistically, which is better?
Jason Mackey
1:45
Got this one before, but I don't think there's a preference. Would venture a guess that it doesn't much matter, either. He's produced at various times with Hornqvist (righty), Rust (righty) and Sheary (lefty).

Is there any evidence that the Pens can flip the switch and get stingier on defense for the playoffs, or do you think we'll continue to see the same style of play?
Jason Mackey
1:45
There's plenty of evidence the past two years. This team knows how to play in the postseason. Maybe a little too well. I think they'll be fine and be able to flip the switch.

First off I am really sorry about the loss of your dad .Now the question Do you honestly think the Pens can 3 peat the way they are playing? Do you think our goalie performance is questionable?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Thanks Rose. I think they can. I don't worry about Murray. Yes, he's been just OK. But he's capable of turning it on in a hurry, as you know. There's something about him and the playoffs ... just meshes well.

Do you Rust Stepping up with big goals in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey
1:47
Yes, I do. Sort of like what I just said about Murray. Applies to Rust, too.

A number of posters on this Post Gazette site are sounding the alarm bells and dooming the Penguins to an early exit - lasting only one round.  What is your honest assessment of how the Penguins may fare in the play-offs?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I think they're one of the best four teams in the NHL. I don't understand the panic.

Curious as to who are the funny entertaining guys to lighten the room up when needed?  I know Fleury was good at that and even Reaves but obviously they’re gone now. I feel like it’s important for a room to have that just as it is to have that veteran “Dad.”
Jason Mackey
1:48
They don't have many, honestly. Dumoulin a little. But goofier guys? Phil. Geno. ... After that, it's pretty business-like. Maybe too business-like.

Sullivan has been mixing up the defensive pairings lately.  What do you think he's looking for?
Jason Mackey
1:48
I think he's trying to see who among Hunwick and Ruhwedel he should use for Game 1 of the playoffs. I also think he's trying to get his defenseman to play a little better and to send a message.

Don't you think Sprong is frustrated seeing guys like Simon and ZAR getting ready for the playoffs with the big club while he's stuck in WBS?  He's more talented than both of them.
Jason Mackey
1:49
I would imagine so, yes. Although hopefully he realizes that there's more to hockey than scoring goals. I also hope he realizes that it'll do him no good to pout.

We read all the time that HCMS makes lineup decisions based on daily discussions with his coaches, as if there is consensus.   With that in mind, do you think it was HCMS
Jason Mackey
1:50
Meaning Sprong? What discussion are we talking about here?
Mike
1:50
Why did Cole have a reputation for being chatty?  I never read anything too crazy that he said and he didn't seem to talk more than anyone else.
Jason Mackey
1:50
He never said anything incendiary. I think it was how frequently Cole was willing to do interviews that irked Sullivan.

Are the defensive breakdowns in 5 on 5 play a result of being too aggressive on the forecheck by the defenseman, not enough support from the forwards, or both?
Jason Mackey
1:50
A little bit of both, honestly. It's a five-man thing. Not just the defense.

Do you think the following lineup decisions were a reflection of consensus or HCMS exclusive preference (not that there is anything wrong with that):  The benching of Cole; the benching of Hunwick; the decision to keep DeSmith and keep Jarry in the minors?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I'm not going to speculate on whether it was a one-man thing or a group decision. I have no way of knowing that. But I do think that Sullivan input from his assistants. All of them have told me that.

Kessel is still having trouble handling the puck.  Why don't they rest him so he can get healthy.  Are they playing him just to keep the streak alive?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Kessel goes in spurts like that. They do love the streak, but I don't have a particular problem with his game right now. Seems a lot of people here do, though. He could go for 2-2-4 tonight easily.

any chance geno wins the hart?
Jason Mackey
1:52
I don't think so, unfortunately. He's kind of tailed off a bit.

Why hasn't the NHL moved to compensatory draft picks for free agent losses like football and baseball have? To me, it's a win-win for the teams and players: More jobs for players, an ability to recoup/rebuild from lost players for the teams. With the draft being worldwide and being only seven rounds, there's plenty of room to add end-of-round picks. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think the NHL, in a lot of ways, tends to stick with what it has always done, right or wrong. I think that's why.

1:53
Which was GMJR's preference:  to acquire Duchene or Brassard?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Brassard. Hence why they did. I think his playoff pedigree had a lot to do with that.

Will you be back on with Starkey and Mueller on 93.7 The Fan soon?  Do you plan your shows in advance with the guys?  Your style fits in with their sense of humor - "Three's Company" could be a title for your segments with them.
Jason Mackey
1:53
Ha. It could. But it won't. You'll have to ask them. I go on whenever they ask. There's no set schedule.

If HCMS coached regular season Mario Lemieux, would he have harped on him playing too much east/west, not "the right way"?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Ha. I don't think so. HCMS doesn't come down too hard on Phil. He lets his best players be his best players. He's harder on the workers.

1:54
What's your take on what the Pens will target in the draft?  Best available regardless of position?  Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:54
Yes. But they probably won't get a goalie and could use some defensive help in the pipeline.

A Canadians announcer wondered the other night if anyone would have ever thought it possible that #66 might end up not being considered the greatest Penguin ever. Do you think 87 could end up being considered greater than 66 when its all said and done?
Jason Mackey
1:55
Sure. I think that's possible. But only because of accomplishments. Pure ability and grace, Mario is the best ever, in my opinion.
