My pleasure. Thanks for participating. Please don't stand on Grant St., waiting for a parade.

I was really disappointed in how they played the last game.  Hearing the announcers say there was no energy on the bench was disappointing to hear.  Do you feel they kind of gave up after game 5 loss?
Jason Mackey
1:23
No, I don't. But I do think they were dog tired. There's no shame in that, right? They played a ton of hockey. They're human.

What did you think of GMJR saying Kessel's injuries caught up with him, and HCMS basically throwing cold water all over that and making sure everyone knew the injuries weren't serious? Is there something up between Sullivan and Kessel? Is this the fallout from losing Tocchet?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Not at all. I think Jim was annoyed that Phil was allowed to keep playing and continue his Ironman streak. I think Sullivan was annoyed that Phil didn't play better through whatever he was playing with. Basically different degrees at being annoyed with Kessel.

Do you attribute  any significance to the presence of Ryan Reaves coinciding with the Penguins relatively long period of being injury-fee the season'?
Jason Mackey
1:25
No, I don't. I think they were due a run of good health. I thought Reaves brought some stuff, but he's not injury insurance. It's still a violent game, even if he's on your team.

How do the Pens make room for Sprong next year? Or is this another case of GMJR talking up a young player in hopes of trading him, aka the Pouliot Gambit?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I think this is different than Pouliot, although it's interesting you bring that up. In this case, this is Rutherford saying something is going to happen. Historically, when he's done that, it has happened. He's not pumping up Sprong's offseason or anything like that. He's telling what he's going to do. That's where I see the biggest difference.

What do you make of the idea of trying Brassard on the wing? I'm of the belief that he was really hurt, and that we didn't see what he was truly capable of after that late season injury. I hope they give him the chance to be the 3rd C next season.
Jason Mackey
1:26
I'm not buying it. If it was such an option this season, why didn't they try it? I think it's lip service. He needs to get healthy, No. 1. He also needs a full year with the Penguins. If he does that, and gets good lineups, he'll be just fine.

I think the Penguins should trade Conner Sherry. Daniel Spring can be ready to take his place. What do you think Jason
Jason Mackey
1:27
Wanting to and being able to are two completely different things. Sprong also doesn't play the left side.

Is it too soon to call the Brassard trade a bust? I say yes, only because they have him for another season and they didn't get a healthy version of him when it counted most. But I'm curious if you think they would have been better off trading for Evander Kane, given the total lack of secondary scoring in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey
1:28
No way on Kane. Wouldn't have fit within their team culture, in my opinion. And, yes, I think it is too soon to say anything about the Brassard trade. Give him until halfway through next season. If it's the same, then I think it's fair. But it's too soon right now.

I won't mention where I read it, but I read that the Ryan Reaves trade came from above Sullivan/GMJR's heads. Does that mean the directive came from Mario? And does that rank as one of the worst trades the Pens have made in a long time? I liked Reaves but he never was a fit, and if they were going to trade their 1st they could've tried for a D man or something of the sort.
Jason Mackey
1:30
Hi Hank. I would prefer you did mention it, honestly. Otherwise I'm responding to something baseless. It's OK if it's the Trib/Athletic/DK. They all do good work and get stories, too. ... From what I know, the trade started with GMJR. But Mario and others fully endorsed doing it.

I think what annoys me the most about this past offseason was that the money used on Reaves/Hunwick could have been put towards either Kunitz, Daley, or Hainsey. Any of them would have been nice to have in the playoffs, no?
Jason Mackey
1:31
They would have, yes. But you weren't going to match the three-year deals Hainsey and Daley got. Not at their age. Kunitz was a tough one, but I think the Penguins hoped they would get Cullen and let Kunitz go. When Cullen went to Minnesota, Kunitz was gone.

Adidas and the NHL are supposed to bring back 3rd jerseys next year. Have you heard anything about what the Pens might use? I'm hoping they bring back the diagonal PITTSBURGH uni, or even bring back the robo-Penguin. And if you haven't heard anything concrete, what would you like to see them do for a 3rd jersey?
Jason Mackey
1:31
I have not heard anything concrete, but I would love to see that jersey. That, too, would be my top choice.

What happened to sams mailbag? Was he not sent enough questions? And that’s why it disappeared
Jason Mackey
1:32
He's doing one this week. I don't know, honestly. You should ask him. Better yet, email him a question: SWerner@post-gazette.com.

Do you have a guess as to what was up with Kessel? Was he hurt or did he just check out?
Jason Mackey
1:32
I think he was hurt. Rib/oblique/wrist/elbow something. No way that guy was fully healthy. It's just a matter of how severe it was. Wish he would've talked yesterday because I think a lot of fans deserve that answer.

If Sheary was to be moved. What would a return for him look like?
Jason Mackey
1:33
Wouldn't be much, I wouldn't think. The return would be someone else taking that contract.

Any chance we sign Reaves when available?
Jason Mackey
1:33
No, I don't think so. I don't think he would want to come here.

Predictions on who goes this off season?
Jason Mackey
1:34
I'd say Hagelin, Hunwick, Jarry and maybe Sheary. Definitely not Letang. Suppose Kessel for the right offer, but I don't get the sense it's a priority.
Smith
1:34
I think trading Hagelin would be a huge mistake, personally. His speed is so dangerous and he's such a good PK.
Jason Mackey
1:34
Fair points. I think it's more looking at the year after, when he would walk away for nothing. They have plenty of wings who can come in and play and kill penalties.

Jason, why didn't any Pittsburgh media report that Simon is actually Mike Sullivan's son?
Jason Mackey
1:35
This is a good one. I liked Starkey's line today about Sullivan's penthouse.

Any idea on how much $ Pens have in regard to free agency or to early to tell?
Jason Mackey
1:36
It's too early to tell. I'm sorry.

I realize hind site is 20-20 but do you think think the pens would of went further without the trades of Cole, Reaves etc?
Jason Mackey
1:37
Probably not, honestly. They didn't get enough secondary scoring. If anything, they were better off in that department by losing Cole and Reaves. I don't think the trades made a huge difference, other than Brassard not producing much. That wasn't good.

Jason.  At this juncture ZAR and Simon seem to be borderline NHL players at best. TK and Rowney are offensive black holes.  Sheary disappears come playoff time.  This group doesnt seem to be the filler necessary for a Cup contender. Is there someone you think has another level?
