The first two, for sure. I think Sheary can be better. Rowney won't be on the team next year. TK is what he is. ... But if you have two other decent offensive players on your fourth line, TK isn't a liability.

JR was on fire!.  Since the last Cup season we saw the weird Reeves epiphany, Niemi, Hunwick, and a so so trade deadline at best. Is it fair to say he has had a bit of a reversion to the means and has cooled off?
Jason Mackey
1:38
He didn't have a great summer last year, I know that. I wouldn't say he's cooled off because then you're discounted the Sheahan and Oleksiak deals, which were really good. And I think it's too soon to properly judge Brassard. Yeah, it stinks he didn't produce in the playoffs. But what if he turns out like James Neal? We're not going to be saying it's a mistake then.
1:40
Green, de Haan, Cole and Moore are probably the top ones. I like de Haan and Moore. Cheap and basic. Green too risky, unless he's really cheap, but they don't need more of that style. Cole won't come here.

What are some of the bigger names in the free agent pool for defenseman this year? I know Karlsson, and Carlson. Personally I do not see the benefit of Letangs play on the top line and could be a John Carlson away from an amazing D group.

Got this answered above.

Hi Jason, personally I think the biggest undisclosed injury was not to 81 or 19 but to Geno, he just looked bad after he returned (slow, tired) no jump, no explosion, and that i think was the difference. When he missed game 2 of caps series i though HCMS was using as precaution and playing with house money after winning game 1, but obviously that wasnt the case, and pens couldnt overcome
Jason Mackey
1:41
Fair point. Geno's injury was a knee, but we don't know exactly what it involved. But yeah, he didn't look like himself at all. Especially not compared to what we saw in January and February out of him.

Another offseason, another search for Sid's RW. We have his RW, his name is Horny, just let them play and leave them alone. That was a big mistake to break up that line
Jason Mackey
1:41
I don't think that's a search at all this offseason. They have Sprong, Hornqvist and Kessel. Plus Rust. They're more than set at RW.

I live in California and wore my Pens jersey to the theater to see Sudden Death. Excellent cinema.

Good to hear, Hank.

Does the Pens organization actually think Murray's glove hand is an issue or not?
Jason Mackey
1:42
No, they don't. That's a fan thing. Guys shoot there because he's tall, and that's one of the few areas of open space. Murray wasn't his best self this year. That's as much of an issue as anything. Yes, it needs work, but it's hardly the world-ending problem many make it out to be.

Any free agents out there at the top of your wish list jason ?
Jason Mackey
1:43
Not really. Mentioned the two possible D men. Still like Grabner, although he's probably going to make as much as Hagelin -- I.e. sideways move. I think the best thing they can do is clear space and skew younger.

But what about hearing Brian Jones sit in with The Dead?  How great would that have been?
Jason Mackey
1:43
Very great. Awesome.

Do you believe Rutherford that I will be on the team next year?  Mark Madden thinks JR might be talking me up in order to trade me, like Pouliot.  And, Sullivan didn't say anything about me.
Jason Mackey
1:44
Well, Sullivan wasn't asked about you, Daniel. We had other things for Mike. But yes, I think he was serious, and I think you will be on the team next year. I think the GM likes you a lot. The coach maybe not so much.

Who do you think is the front runner for playoff MVP? Connect Smythe is it? Flower, OV?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Conn Smythe. And to me, right now, it's Fleury.

Good afternoon Jason, I know the Pens are tight lip about the injuries they had but do you have information on the specifics on what was bothering guys like Kessel and Malkin?
Jason Mackey
1:45
Good afternoon, Steve. Sorry, no I don't. Neither was available to us yesterday at clean-out day, and my back-channel efforts have not yet uncovered anything.

What are the particular strength of Simon that the coaching staff saw and we should look for in order to appreciate him? Usually these things are obvious to someone who watches a lot of hockey but not here.
Jason Mackey
1:46
He's smart. Can skate. Pretty good shot. Has functioned well with Crosby before. Should he have gotten as much slack as he did? No. But when he's going, those are some of Simon's best traits.

What band do you have a problem with - Train or Florida Georgia Line?  Have you ever heard their live stuff? They jam long and great like the Dead did. Check it out!
Jason Mackey
1:46
Not a fan of either, sorry. I've heard them both.

Is Brassard GMJR's Iginla?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Could be, but I think it's way too early to tell on that one. It's hardly the first time a deadline acquisition didn't have the desired impact. Everyone on the planet praised that trade when it happened. Brassard was hurt. Iginla was mostly healthy. Big difference.

Hey jason,  What do u think actually is Letang's issue at heart?  From a fans perspective it seems we have waited forever for his game to mature and become savvy.  I am doubting that ever happens.
Jason Mackey
1:48
I think it's feel. I think mentally he was out of whack a little this season. Because they asked him to tweak his game. Because of his neck. Because he struggled early. He looked to me like a guy who was wrapped around the axle. Could use the offseason to chill out.

I think the player Rutherford needs to trade most this summer is Simon, so Sullivan won't get to play him on the first line. I'm 100% serious about this.
Jason Mackey
1:49
What do you think Jim would get for Simon? My guess would be not much.

Mackey, who is the greatest sports writer of all time?     And don't say Ed Bouchette just cuz he is the Godfather of Pittsburgh Sports!!!!
Jason Mackey

My personal favorite is Barry Svrluga from The Washington Post.
I also like Bruce Arthur from the Toronto Star a lot.

Have always been a big Drew Brees fan. Peyton Manning, too.

Should big Ben pull a Mario and have Rudolph move into his place? Worked out well for guins...
