i think the reason we lost game 6 was because olli maatta didnt score the ice breaker easy fix and we win game 7
Jason Mackey
1:24
Yep, always Olli's fault.
kor
1:24
any word on Justin Schultz? Expect him to play?
Jason Mackey
1:25
He's a game-time decision and no, I don't. He didn't take the morning skate. He's yet to skate with the team since suffering an upper-body injury, outside of warmup before Game 5. Would be really surprising to see him play.

Why are players permitted to use amyl nitrate ? I see a few using on the bench before games. Other sports too.
Jason Mackey
1:26
I don't know -- I'm assuming these are the ingredients in smelling salts -- and some do stay away because they worry about the long-term effects.
doyle37
1:26
Isn't this performance enhancing?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I think you're splitting hairs. Because, technically, lifting weights enhances your performance, right? Or it could potentially. Or working hard. That's a performance-enhancer.

Do you really think they would go with sheary... like why go with sprong hes everything sheary is but better!!!
Jason Mackey
1:27
You can't just drop a guy into Game 7 of a playoff series, especially when he hasn't so much as practiced with the team in more than a year. And yes, I do think they really would go with Sheary. He's a solid player. Scored 23 goals. He was a mental wreck when he came out of the lineup. Guessing they think something clicked. Him not playing well has nothing to do with lack of effort, believe me.

If Sheary is in, who's out?
Jason Mackey
1:27
Likely Archibald.

1:28
Looking ahead here, but doesn't each team have to make one goalie available for the expansion draft? So if they trade Fleury, would they have to make Jarry available?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Jarry isn't eligible. They would have to sign a Jeff Zatkoff type or get one in return.
Avi
1:28
Why did anyone, especially Crosby, shake Niskanen's hand?
Jason Mackey
1:29
Crosby is the epitome of class. Handshakes are also what you do. I'm sure they weren't happy with what Niskanen did, but they won the series and Crosby's back. It doesn't matter anymore.
Avi
1:29
If the pens are losing late in the third, does HCMS put fleury in?
Jason Mackey
1:29
To try and score goals? Probably not. If Murray struggles, I have no doubt Sullivan would turn to Fleury, the same if Fleury was starting tonight and he theoretically struggled.

i think when the Preds lost of Ryan Johansen the team became "less magic" and don't played well and have to thanks a injury of Gibson to advance for the Stanley Cup.
Jason Mackey
1:30
They're still there, though, right? The Predators are so, so much more than Ryan Johansen. Hot team, No. 1. Rinne, their top four defensemen, Forsberg, Arvidsson ... c'mon!
dave
1:30
Isn't it telling that with all the injuries on defense, Pouliot isn't even getting consideration for a spot? He probably needs a change of scenery, don't you think?
Jason Mackey
1:31
Yes and yes. I honestly think if it got to it, Cameron Gaunce would go in before Pouliot. I wouldn't doubt the organization has punted on this year. They might not cut bait, but I don't think they have a lot of confidence he can help them right now. And I wouldn't doubt they went with the change of scenery option in the summer, either.
Avi
1:31
I meant that if they are losing would he put fleury in as a possible goodbye to the fans
Jason Mackey
1:32
No, I don't. Sullivan's not the sentimental type, and it sure isn't going to start in a Game 7 where his team's losing.
Avi
1:35
Crosby world class player who shakes dirty player hands. Sullivan who isn't sentimental. Is it safe to say Sullivan didn't shake Niskanens hand lol
Jason Mackey
1:35
Sullivan did. Same amount of class as Sid.

Given all of the injuries, is it fair to say that this team has overachieved this season even if they lose tonight?
Jason Mackey
1:37
I don't think overachieved. And I wouldn't call it a failure, either. I'm hesitant on "overachieved" because, even without Letang, they still have a ton of talent. They expect to be here. But, yeah, I can't call it a failure, either, because of the injuries, etc. If they lose -- and I don't think they will -- I don't think there's a darn thing to be ashamed of. Ottawa's a good team. Playoffs aren't easy. Try to keep as much of this together for next year as possible, and go get 'em then. But again, I do think the Penguins win tonight.

Based on the final leg of the regular season as well as the playoff performances, who do the Pens protect after the season ends? Which young players do not need to be protected, i.e. Guentzel, Sheary, Rust, etc.?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I honestly don't know. Guentzel and Sheary are exempt. Rust is not. I would entertain going eight skaters because I think it's important for them to protect Letang, Maatta, Schultz and either Cole or Dumoulin. If you expose both, you'll almost certainly lose one, and you also won't lose Carl Hagelin, who, at $4 million, has become overpriced, in my opinion.
Clare
1:41
Sorry I have not had chance to read back. If this is the end of the season tonight what next for Dad (#7)?
Jason Mackey
1:42
Very likely. Not saying for sure, but every sign he's given us -- especially late -- leads me to believe that he's viewing this as his last year. Could still change. I think he's having a boatload of fun, and he can still play. But if you want to call it a career after everything he's done, he's well within his rights to get on with the rest of his life.
Charlie
1:42
Do the Pens have enough people under contract to meet the requirements of the expansion draft rules?
Jason Mackey
1:43
Yes, they do. The only thing they'd have to worry about is signing a goalie they can expose if they trade Fleury.
Dawid
1:43
What would you do with Kunitz after this season? Let him go or sign for next 1-2 years?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Depends. If Cullen retires and Kunitz wants to play on a one-year deal worth roughly $1 million, then I think he would be a valuable third- or fourth-liner. But if another team wants to throw, say, $3 million a year at him, there's no way I would match that. And if Cullen wants to stay, I wouldn't go with two of those contracts to vets; I want to give the young kids a chance to earn a spot or two. So, then I wouldn't bring back Kunitz.

1:44
Thoughts on how this game will be officiated? Will they put the whistles away and let them play or will they make some calls early and set the tone?
Jason Mackey
1:44
I'll take the latter. Based on how last game went, I'd expect a few penalties early to try and take control right away.
Carlos
1:44
I agree with you Jason but I see in the last two games the team shaking and Rinne was stelar. I'm not saying the Preds it's awful, they are good and promissing, but If Pens advance (I think 3-1) my fear it's 90% on Rinne because he's outstanding in these playoffs.
Jason Mackey
1:45
That's still a heck of a situation: To get this far because you have a dominant goaltender. I think the Predators are better than you're giving them credit for, though.
