I don't think it would've changed a thing, honestly. Not downplaying your question, Viv. And not trying to be smug or disrespectful to Will. But I think things would've been about the same.

Do you think the reason the Caps arent getting the same heat that the Pens got for choosing to go to the White House is bc: 1) the Pens already did it 2) people just love hating on Sid and the Pens or 3) itll happen closer to when they go ? Sid and the guys got a crazy amount of hate and ddnt even retweet or take party pics with the Trumps like the Caps have.

I'm not sure. I can't say I've paid a ton of attention to how that bit of news has been received in Washington or elsewhere. I think the Penguins got the blowback they did because they were the first ones through the wall, so to speak. Also, it happened at the height of the anthem controversy, and they came out and reaffirmed their plans on a day when the whole Warriors thing went down.

I get frustrated by the Pens sometimes when playing defense in their own zone. There's a 50-50 puck and the Pens' forwards don't leave their area of the D-zone and the opposition maintains possession. This happens constantly (esp with Phil). Do you also notice this? Is this how they are instructed to defend?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I don't think this happens because of an unwillingness, Jeff. I think a lot of times this past season it was awareness more than anything. Or maybe a diligence -- Sullivan uses the word a lot -- in knowing where you're supposed to be and paying attention. I don't think they're seeing something and just flat-out refusing to do it.

Do you think the Pens will play the Caps on their banner night?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Oh, yeah. That has national broadcast written all over it.

How crowded and how much fun is the fan fest at the draft?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Never been. Never will be. I'm sure for fans it's great, but we're not fans. We're going to work. I know this: I'm expecting Dallas to do a really good job hosting the draft.

hey Jason, what sort of return can be expected for one of our young netminders like Jarry? Will he be used to open up cap space or will they look for a true hockey return? Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:48
If they trade Jarry -- GMJR is maintaining a camp battle between Jarry and DeSmith -- I think it will be to get something done, as almost an enticement for the other team. And in that case, probably for another NHL player, someone they really want rather than a pick. But his use would be more a service to the other team as opposed to someone like Hunwick, whom a team would be taking for the opposite reason, if you get my drift.

Whoa! So pumped you listed to some KISS this week, Jason! What did you listen to and did you get the resemblence to the DEAD?   AWESOME!

Live record from a couple years ago. Don't know the title off-hand. And honestly, no, I didn't. I never have.

Are the Penguins in on Ilya Kovalchuk?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Not that I'm aware of, no.

I feel like Doumolin is actually underrated, not only overall, but offensively. He is able to carry the puck for long periods of time, he can enter the zone and maintain possession, he is often able to go hard toward the net for a scoring chance (see Capitals series). Any chance they ask him to develop this part of his game?
Jason Mackey
1:49
I agree with you on your assessment. They think Dumoulin can be a star in this league, and we're all starting to see why. He's really good, an All-Star is the NHL didn't use this dumbass formula. But, yeah, they'll continue to push him on both sides of the puck to do more.

Is there anything to Sid training in Europe ( new technique he's trying to pick up) or is it just he wanted to start up and he was there? Also, is it generally common for the Pens trainer to travel with him and help train him and others overseas(not in pitt or Canada) ? Its great to see our boys already working hard!
Jason Mackey
1:51
For anyone else this might be weird. For Sid, no. He's just maniacal. It's (mostly) healthy, and the dude knows how to regulate himself. But he just loves hockey. He wants to play and practice it all the time. So, no, he's not seeking some sort of answers or trying to do something different. Just vacationing. And doing something he loves. Like we would waterski or something.

Who would be the top five Penguins in Hockey IQ?
Jason Mackey
1:51
Good question. Crosby, Guentzel, Maatta, Dumoulin and Murray. Sheahan is close.

What does Sheahan offer that Eric Fehr did not, such that HCMS thinks so highly of his game?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Sheahan is a better skater than Fehr, for one. I think they have more confidence in Sheahan's ability to move up in the lineup. His faceoffs are probably a little better, and there's more scoring touch ... once the Penguins brought it out. ... I also think the Penguins like Sheahan's ability and willingness to play a little bit more physical than Fehr.

What is Murray’s nickname in the locker room ?
Jason Mackey
1:53
It's either Murr or Muzz, depending on whom you ask.

Do you think the team needs to get younger?  The team was 7th oldest at the start of the season, and 50% of their starting forwards going into next year will be 30 or over when the season starts (Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Hornqvist, Hagelin, Brassard).  The concern is not only the age, but being top heavy with older players.  Teams like Toronto, Tampa, New Jersey, Colorado, Nashville, Columbus are up and coming, and have a good group of skilled young forwards.  Having guys like Crosby and Malkin in the top 6, spelled by guys like Cullen and Kunitz in the bottom is one thing, but this team seems older players are all of their best forwards.  I think they can get younger and still compete in their window, rather than become Detroit, hanging onto all of its skilled players much past their prime.
Jason Mackey
1:55
I don't think so. Of the guys you mentioned, they're not trading Crosby or Malkin; Kessel is coming off a career-best offensive season, although I know he stunk in the playoffs; nobody should be worried about Hornqvist, at least not right now; ditto for Hagelin; and I think Brassard has enough of a recent sample size to where folks are questioning fit -- which is fair -- as opposed to whether he can still keep up. I don't have a problem at all with how the Penguins are built. The issue is with how that group has performed.

What do u think about the Penguins current backup situation??? Do you think they could add a veteran to aid Murray???
Jason Mackey
1:56
Nah, I don't think it's necessary. Were it me, I'd roll with DeSmith as the backup and use Jarry to try and rid myself of the Hunwick or Sheary contracts. Or, if I got wind it was possible and maybe it took Jarry to do a Jarry, Hagelin and Sheary for Max Domi and something else sort of deal, I'd do that. But I'd explore my options with moving Jarry is what I'm saying.

Is it weird I’m still mad about the officiating in the Pens-Caps series?  In the span of two games 5 calls were missed or went against Pittsburgh.
Jason Mackey
1:56
I think it's time to let it go, Mike.

What do you think the salary will be of Jake Guentzel when he signs with Pittsburgh?  How many years as well?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Hard to predict. His 2017-18 was wild. Bad regular season. Incredible in the playoffs. Which one is it? I think that will determine his years and dollars? I think it will be more the playoff version, though.
Jason Domitrovic
1:59
Do you agree with me that Carter Rowney should and will not be signed by the Penguins going forward?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Yes.

Hey, Jason.  Thanks for another chat. You mentioned the need to improve the 4th line.  I certainly agree.  Although the Pens have a lot of RFA priorities this year, and the actual salary cap is still an open question, would you be in favor of them pursuing Devante Smith-Pelly in free agency?
Jason Mackey
2:00
Absolutely I would be in favor of it. But is it realistic? No. I doubt the Caps let him go. Being down there some these playoffs, boy do they like him. I think he likes it there, too, especially how he's used. Don't think the Penguins could afford him, and I think he wants to stay in D.C.

Has Max Domi become the Pens third line center chat topic for this offseason?
Jason Mackey
2:02
No, nothing will ever replicate that. The Domi stuff is fun. He's a terrific player. The only questions are whether would do it, and what the ask will be. Could be extremely high.

What do you feel will happen with Matt Hunwick?
