I don't think that would work. I think the way they did it was fine. I don't think your solution would fix the problem. I think the GM drafting for the expansion team would still hold all the leverage, whether or not it was public.

Do you think the Pens will look to add a top 4 d man in FA, or depth only?
Jason Mackey
1:37
I think they'll look and see. However, prices could be insane. That will dictate whether they go top-four or not.

What do they think of Sundquist?  They're going to need a 3rd/4th line center, but I don't think he's done much in his limited appearances with the team.
Jason Mackey

They like him, but there remains some concern over his ability to contribute offensively. They'd like something. But every time he's come up to the NHL, that part of his game hasn't followed suit.
1:39
Yes, the deal starts with the 2017-18 season, so he would be unable to play in college.

Will Tiffels head straight to WBS?  I'm a bit surprised it's another forward--who in the farm system could be brought up on D?

Do you think the Pens have a good chance of signing any College free agents .... if so who? Spencer Foo, others?
Jason Mackey
1:40
Sorry, Bill. I have not gotten that far in addressing their needs. I can tell you this: They value very much the idea of college free agents. It's part of the market they've done very well with in the past. I would expect that to continue.

The Habs just acquired Schlemko from Vegas for a 5th rounder in 2020. If that's the going rate for defensemen, you'd think surely Rutherford could get a decently-priced bottom 4 defenseman from them, too, right?
Jason Mackey
1:41
You would think. I don't disagree with you.

Do the Penguins see Rowney as a guy who could be an answer as the fourth center should Cullen retire? No idea what his possession or faceoff numbers look like.
Jason Mackey
1:41
Yeah, I think they'd be OK with him as the fourth-line center, but if he was, I think they'd like to have Bonino, Cullen or a free agent they sign to add a little offensive punch.

Are you surprised that McDavid took the Lindsay over Crosby? I am.
Jason Mackey
1:42
A little bit. I thought Crosby would get the Lindsay and McDavid would win the Hart.

Since they already had a deal with LV to take Fleury, it really didn't matter which other players they left unprotected.  How do you think they decided which players to put on the list?  Maybe the team used the list to shop those players to other teams?
Jason Mackey
1:44
I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to bet they put together the list assuming they could potentially lose one of those guys ... and not just carelessly throw it out there.

You mentioned that Pens aren't a great match with VGK, but when a guy like TVR goes for a future 2nd and Schlemko goes for a 5th isn't this exactly the type of thing the Pens should be doing to acquire D talent/depth? Do you want Pouliot in the top 6 or 7 come opening night? I surely dont.
Jason Mackey
1:44
I don't, either, but I don't think they should overpay. ... When I typed that, I didn't realize the prices were so low.

Hi Jason. With the addition of Fleury's salary and most of Kunitz's (if he comes back), the Pens should have about $20 mil in cap space to sign their players and add a couple. Hopefully a top 4 D and a tough Fwd. Do you agree?
Jason Mackey
1:45
Yes. They have about $20 million to spend, but that's taking into account only 10 forwards, three defensemen and a goalie under contract. So, they have a lot of work to do it.

Do you think the Pens will retire Flower's jersey someday?  It would be great to see #29 in the rafters with 66, 87, 71 and even 68!
Jason Mackey

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. Maybe, I could be wrong. He still has plenty of hockey left. I definitely see him getting inducted into the ring of honor or whatever you want to call it.
OK, folks. Thanks so much for participating. Have to get to work on some stories here, then fly back home. Talk to you next week.
