Who are a few Penguin's prospects in the minors that are going to surprise us this year?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Look out for Ethan Prow. I think he could surprise. I also think Thomas DiPauli could emerge as a player to watch. I like what I saw out of him at development camp. (I'm avoiding Sprong and ZAR because I think they're a little too obvious.)

If you were the GM, what kind of contract would you offer Sheary?
Jason Mackey
1:29
I'd start around $2 million, expecting the number to grow to $2.5-$3 million, maybe even $3.25.

Do you think, as other members of the media seem to do, that JR is looking to land a "big fish" at 3C as opposed to a young player to develop?
Jason Mackey
1:30
Jim wants to land someone who can contribute right away. That's the way this team is built -- to win now. The Penguins don't have to develop on the fly, and they often don't. It doesn't necessarily have to be a big fish, but the guy GMJR gets won't be a project either.
Trent Reznor
1:30
By foreign organization, do you mean we're trading an nhl guy for a khl guy? I didn't think that was possible.
Jason Mackey
1:30
No, I mean the other organization is not one anyone around here has any familiar with in terms of getting information. We don't know what the heck their intentions are.
Brett Michaels
1:31
Any truth to the rumors that Hags was unfocused and unmotivated? I mean 6 goals for 4m a year is pretty sad.
Jason Mackey
1:32
Rumors? One, I'd like to see where this was reported. Two, I have no way of saying something with accuracy when it comes to Carl Hagelin's focus or motivating. I'm slandering the guy if I do. Was his production enough for what he made? No. Did he look the same as he had in the past? Not consistently. Was he healthy? I don't think. But it's not far of me to, as a beat guy, just throw out there that he wasn't focused or prepared. That's the job of the coaching staff.

Any chance the Pens would look to bring back Brandon Sutter as their 3C?
Jason Mackey
1:34
Really, really doubt it. He's slated to make $4.375 million for the next four years. One of the things GMJR has consistently said is that he doesn't want to saddle the team with bad contracts down the road. This would absolutely be that, unless Vancouver, for whatever reason, took back a heap of money, and even then I have my doubts.
R. Tocchet
1:34
I did not seem all that upset about leaving the 'burgh.  Any chance I will regret not coaching a team with Sid and Geno?
Jason Mackey
1:34
Good chance, Rick. That roster looks a little rough.
Boz Scaggs
1:34
Do the players hate the music played in the arenas around the league?  I mean, how many times can you hear Cotton-Eye-Joe or Black Betty before you vomit?
Jason Mackey
1:35
Ha. That's actually a story I'd love to do ... and probably will next season. I know some don't pay a ton of attention; they're too much in the zone. But it has to be something they think about: Which arenas play the best and worst music. Detroit is one of my personal favorites.
TK
1:35
Would they have any interest in Jagr on a 1-year minimum contract?
Jason Mackey
1:36
Was told by GMJR on July 1 in no uncertain terms: No. In fact, I followed Jim out of his presser to ask him, and he looked at me like I had three heads for even thinking to ask.
Lukas
1:36
Is there any specific FAs out there that make sense for this team?
Jason Mackey
1:36
Not really at this point. Matt Cullen? He's about it. The third-line center they're going to get will come via trade.
Pete
1:36
Will Archibald be a regular this season?
Jason Mackey
1:37
I think so. He has a one-way contract. and rarely are those guys sent down and paid NHL dollars. Plus, Archibald's skill set -- speed, tenacity and the ability to kill penalties -- fits well with what Sullivan is trying to do. If the Penguins try to package Hagelin in a trade for a 3C, and even if they take back some $$$, Archibald could easily slot into that role, and the Penguins would still be better for it.
Joe
1:37
Did someone really ask about who the minor league assistant coach will be?
Jason Mackey
1:38
Yep. And no need to criticize others' questions, Joe. It was a perfectly valid one. I asked it of the general manager a couple weeks back.

what is rust, kunknacel and wilson making weren't they all offered that 3 year extension last year i wouldnt pay sheary more than im paying rust.
Jason Mackey
1:39
$625K (Wilson/Kuhnhackl) and $640K (Rust). Sheary's going to get more than $640,000 in arbitration, I can promise you that.
Tyler Bozak
1:39
Do you think it's possible that the Penguins will trade for me?  Or, do you think my current team will want too much, forcing the Pens to overpay if they really wanted me?
Jason Mackey
1:40
I think both are possibilities, Tyler. I think you would be a great fit in Pittsburgh. You and Phil could own this town.

Re-send now, Birdie.

How much $$$ do the Stanley Cup winners get?
Jason Mackey
1:41
Not sure currently. The last figure I could find was $3.75 million for the Stanley Cup champion. Believe that's the team, not the individual player.
dave
1:41
Do you think they'd like to sign Cole to a new contract at some point?
Jason Mackey
1:42
Not from what I've heard. I think they're going to wait and see. But with Letang, Dumoulin, Maatta and Schultz ... plus maybe Pouliot and Hunwick for three more years ... and Prow and who knows what else in the minors, I think they may view Cole as expendable.
Lukas
1:42
Who's going to win the cup this year? Which team is going to flop from last year? Any Bold predictions?
Jason Mackey
1:43
I like Chicago and Tampa. Not bold, I know. I think Washington may take a significant step backward.

1:44
What about Mike Fisher as 4th line center – if he doesn't retire? 18 goals, 42 pts. isn't too shabby.
Jason Mackey
1:44
I love it. I think Fisher would be a terrific fit. But everything I've heard indicates he would have a tough time leaving Nashville. Seems like it's either Preds or retirement for him. But if he wanted to come to Pittsburgh on a one-year deal for around that amount ... absolutely. I think he would be a terrific fit here.
Birdie
1:44
If owner if pens stated he'd give 15M to get maf back couldn't he have stopped him from leaving. Info plz
Jason Mackey
1:45
No. Ron Burkle could not have stopped the expansion draft. That was the issue with Fleury.
