Did you see The fort’s  reference about Santana? Expecting a deal to be done here??
Jason Mackey

Uncle.

Is there a player from another team that you've had especially good interactions with?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Usually not without having a relationship based on Pittsburgh. Players will trust you if you get to known them, treat them professionally, etc. But if they don't know you from Adam, that's only going to go so far.

I don't understant why some people are upset about signing Chapman.  Whenever there is an opportuntiy to sign a player that makes the team better, do it.  Chapman (absent a trade involving a reliever) takes the place of the last man in the bullpen, who almost always is a fringe player.  Why should fans care about the money?  It's not coming out of their pockets. I can't imagine this discussion happening in most MLB markets.
Jason Mackey

I think it's just frustration over more repackaged. Which, I get the frustration, and I get wanting them to do more. But objectively, you're gonna have a hard time convincing me that Chapman is a bad reliever or doesn't make the Pirates' bullpen better.

Are the Pirates doing this backwards? Seems like getting the lock down bullpen should be the last thing to take care of after a starting rotation and more reliable lineup.
Jason Mackey
1:48
Depends on what happens. If they trade for Logan Gilbert or Edward Cabrera, I would be fine with it.

Do we really have to root for Chapman now?  Doesnt he belong on our Mt. Rushmore of recent villains with Puig, Derek Dietrich & Amir Garrett?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Ha. Fair sentiment! Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Jake Arrieta, on and on. And yes you do.

Hey Jason, why do you think the Royals gave up on Olivares for what seems like such a small return? Olivares seems like a solid bat on the rise. Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:49
I think they maybe wanted to improve the spot? Maybe his defense wasn't good? They had a 40-man crunch? That was a little surprising.

Is Mike Burrows healthy enough to contribute early this season?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I'm not expecting Burrows until mid-July or maybe August because of TJ.

Hello Jason. Is there any word on a possible Carlos Santana reunion?
Jason Mackey

Man, are my answers not going through here?

Is it difficult for them to make a trade because they are overvaluing their prospects? Teams value power arms and bats. They probably don’t want to trade an arm, and they don’t have a ton of power bats.
Jason Mackey
1:51
Could be. They also could be hesitant because they 1. Know they need prospects and 2. Are afraid of doing something that back-fires. But I also think at this point it's just posturing more than anything.
Justin

Do you get the sense that the team is like, happy, with how things look entering year five of the rebuild?  Is there anything that they say they wish they did better on or could improve on or admit that they screwed up, or do the people you talk to tend to leave it at "we believe in what we are doing"?
Jason Mackey
1:51
That's what they say publicly. And I think there's a measure of being pleased. Is it as perfect as they present? Of course not. They're trying to be all positive all the time. But overall, do I genuinely think they're happy with where they're at? Yes, I do.

Do you get the idea that the team refuses to accept that they might have to substantially overpay a middle tier free agent to get them to come here? Instead of 1/$10 MM it might have to be 1/$14 MM.
Jason Mackey
1:52
I think they get that they would have to, yes. And I think they're trying to see if there's another option. They might find it. They might not. Gonna be interesting either way.

Jason, I am a bit optimistic about the upcoming season! If we can another starting pitcher I would be plumb tickled 😊⚾️⚾️⚾️
Jason Mackey

It's weird how many varying opinions there are out there. Some people are "plumb tickled," whatever that means. Other people wanna throw down. Shocking, but the truth may be in the middle.

Is Altoona's strength and conditioning coach any relation to the owner?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Google his LinkedIN. That's gonna be a no.

Jason, am I being dangled as trade bait?
Jason Mackey

No sir.

Where does Edward Oliveres fit on the roster? Hard to see a roster with him, Joe, Cutch, Tellez, Palacios. Does he have an option?
Jason Mackey
1:55
Olivares had decently above-average numbers -- 109 OPS+ that I keep citing. Gets on base. Has power. He will be given a chance to play a decent amount.

Any idea of what the vision is for the baseball village they are supposedly developing and how it might affect revenue/payroll? (If not a story idea?)
Jason Mackey

Mark Belko covers this topic extensively. Not sure I can distill that answer into one chat response where this thing is nearing hour 2.

If you were a team Trading a young Starter to the Pirates I’d be asking for Triolo, Mlodzinski & Barco back... how’s ‘bout you?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I'd ask for Cruz, Skenes & Termarr.
1:57
It all depends on the young starter, Judy. All teams do valuations of their prospects. So, the Pirates go into it with an expectation, so does another team. Maybe that's position-specific. Oftentimes it's not.

Jason. Loved your article on Freddy Sanchez! Would love to hear your take on former Bucs: Craig Wilson, Jack Wilson and Garrett Jones! Bucs Fan in Ga⚾️⚾️⚾️

Have done a lot on Jack. Maybe I'll get to Jones this season. Gotta space those out. Also not exactly rolling in extra time these days.
Justin

Have you heard anything on what the team thinks was the cause for Contreras and Ortiz's regressions last year, and how remedying those issues in the offseason may be going?
Jason Mackey
1:59
Yeah, we've talked to folks about that. Inconsistent mechanics. Often moving too fast toward the plate, things getting out of sync. There was also a decent amount of thinking too much/confidence lost. They played with pitch mix stuff, too. Not a ton of offseason updates, unfortunately. But it was a lot of biomechanical changes. Maybe too many.

Jason, am I allowed to self nominate for one of those Where Are Yinz Now special features?
