Jason Mackey's Pirates chat: 03.29.24

They can, but then the pitcher has to hit. To save typing it out, here's some brief background:
Tom J.
12:09
I have been out of the loop for a while. Best wishes in the new gig as a columnist, Jason!  - Tom
Jason Mackey
12:10
Thanks so much, Tom!
Daniel
12:10
Do you think Bednar issue could get him on IL soon?
Jason Mackey
12:10
No, I don't. I think that's why they did what they did yesterday. Shelton said Bednar would be good to go starting today.
David
12:10
From a previous chat, we you able to find out the details regarding a potential sponsorship patch? Was interested in knowing if the revenue is shared. Thanks
Jason Mackey
12:10
What do you mean if the revenue was shared? Like would the Pirates have to split that with other teams?
Henry Davis
12:11
Everyone needs to get off my back about not running out the line drive to short. That ball is caught 999 times out of 1000, and from my vantage point coming out of the box it looked like it fell in that 999 category. Go touch grass people.
Jason Mackey
12:11
I didn't even notice this place. Henry Davis is the last person I'd put in the question effort category.

I cannot remember German's, pitcher from the Yankees, first name so I went looking on the website to find it. I can't find it. Is he not with the team anymore? Anyway, I went looking for him because the last thing I read, can't recall where now, was an article that presented him as a high risk signing citing a comment from him saying that he doesn't believe he has a drinking problem. And I was going to mention that because I've read a couple pieces about Trevor Hoffman in which he's said things that could conceivably be taken to mean he's learned a lot and MIGHT be committed to being a better teammate. I can understand a team not wanting players with baggage, especially baggage related to domestic violence. But obviously the Pirates are not such a team and I just cannot understand why they bring in several guys with that sort of baggage but stop at the one guy who might most address a real need, would come cheaply, and could be tossed at the first sign of trouble.
Jason Mackey
12:13
He's in extended spring training to get stretched out. He'll be in Indy soon. I read those comments as well, and they concern me. As does the revelation that he went to rehab to collect his check from the Yankees. Not great. If someone has a problem and wants to get help, I'm absolutely for supporting that and giving them a second or even third chance. I'm glad he went to rehab. But those details do give me some pause. That said, the Pirates haven't promised him much of anything. If he slips up, he's gone.

Good afternoon Jason What Do You Think About The Play Yesterday Of Ortiz and Hernandez I Think They Both Looked Good according to Joe Block and Matt Capps LETS GO BUCS 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️⚾️⚾️
Jason Mackey
12:14
Good afternoon, Ryan. Was very impressed. Those two were spot on with their analysis, per usual. I was even more impressed with Ortiz, who might be best suited to shorter bursts. Loved the fastball life. Slider has always been very good. Just do that.

And finally, will you do any sort of chats in your new life? Didn't you do one or two all sports chats when it looked like you were going to have a different role at the PG? I enjoy Pirate chats but also really used to enjoy them when Paul Zeise did them. No matter, once again, I hope it goes even better for you than you seem to think it will.
Jason Mackey
12:15
Yes, I will. I like 'em. They will just encompass all sports. May try to integrate video as well. And, yeah, with the senior sports writer dalliance we did that. Seemed to work out well. But absolutely plan to keep chatting.
Larry
12:15
Why do they always throw the baseball out of the game when a pitch is in the dirt, but they don't throw the ball out when the ball is hit in play? Is it because the dirt around the plate is different than the dirt in the field of play?
Jason Mackey
12:16
Yeah, it's dirty. Ha. I have no idea. It's a good point. Maybe because it's hitting mostly grass and likely not as scuffed? It is an odd line to draw.
David
12:16
Yes. Some teams are making 10M off the patch. Others only 5M. Is is the teams to use or is it shared with all the the other teams? Since the Pirates don't have one yet, are they missing out?
Jason Mackey
12:16
I can't imagine they would start sharing revenue with anyone. They're not designated a revenue-sharing club. Nor would they ever be.
David
12:16
Any word on if Holderman and Mlodzinski, Grandal and Bae's IL stints were backdated?
Jason Mackey
12:17
Yes, they were. To March 25.
SteeloCity
12:17
Jason, I really question your baseball knowledge sometimes. You dont seem to realize that Endy's bat does not play at all at 1b or DH and that he would be worthless anywhere other than catcher
Jason Mackey
12:18
Thank you. Luckily you will be rid of my lack of baseball knowledge soon enough. For what it's worth, if you've reached a definitive conclusion on a player after 204 plate appearances, congratulations. You've done something that professional scouts with 30-plus years in the business and zillions of nights on the road watching games are unable to do.
Bednar's Lat
12:18
Jason, how big of a concern am I?  It's not nothing.....
Jason Mackey
12:19
I don't see it as a huge issue. He pitched in the final couple spring training games. Velo was as normal. Shelton said it was pre-planned. I don't know. You can worry about it if you want, but I don't see it as a huge issue.
Alan
12:19
Did you agree with the 3rd base coaches decision yesterday?
Jason Mackey
12:19
Guessing you mean on Henry? No, I don't.
George T
12:23
Hi Jason, with you taking over for Ron Cook, will you be taking over his position on the FAN with Joe Starkey?
Jason Mackey
12:24
I will not. That's The Fan. We're the Post-Gazette. I might be on with Joe. Might be on some with all the hosts from time-to-time. They're good friends, and I like doing it. But I don't have any desire to do four hours of radio. Too prohibitive when it comes to how I want to do the columnist thing.
Willy T
12:24
Hey Jason, what is the concern level with Mitch’s velocity? And has the team or Mitch really addressed it?
Jason Mackey
12:24
Nobody has addressed it. They've been asked and downplayed its significance. I have concerns, absolutely. That being said, it was back in his last spring start. So, I don't know what to make of it. Kind of a wait-and-see deal for me.
Stash
12:25
Jason, I know my previous query was keeping you up night, so I did some research. Catchers drop their gloves before the pitch comes because a glove moving up into the strike zone looks better to the clueless umps than one heading downwards.  Sweet dreams, my man.
Jason Mackey
12:25
Thank you. It did. Now I can rest easy.
David
12:25
How active will you be on Twitter with your new job?
Jason Mackey
12:25
Not sure. Some. Probably not as much, if we're being honest. I don't find it healthy or beneficial to  be on there a ton. But we do have to spend a certain amount of time on there in this business, sadly.
Smidges
12:26
Is there any chance you switch back to the beat at some point? This Hiles guy is a clown.
Jason Mackey
12:26
I
12:27
I would imagine you're kidding. I would hope you're kidding. Noah is awesome & gonna do great. Far from a clown. Honestly, of the people I've met in this business, Noah and Andrew are in my top three. They're smart and likable. They're talented and work hard. They're gonna do great. Again, I'm sure you're messing with me. But I would rather use the chance to tell everyone how much they're gonna love Noah and Andrew because they will.
Trey
12:27
Jason, 46 days until Skenes minor league career runs out, or less?
Jason Mackey
12:27
I could see that happening. So you're telling me he's up here in mid-May? Entirely possible.
