Jason, not a query, I just wanted to say that I looked very good taking that up-in-the zone heater out of the park.
Jason Mackey
12:34
You did. Heck of a swing indeed. You love heat up in the zone.
Alan
12:34
When is Jones scheduled to start
Jason Mackey
12:34
Tomorrow.

Jason, I'm not sure I've ever seen a player such as OC who can look so terribly bad in one at bad, and then blow my mind the next time up. Your comparisons, if any?
Jason Mackey
12:35
Man, I have no comparison to Oneil Cruz. This isn't accurate, but if you're talking boom or bust ... Pedro? I still don't like it. Cruz is such a freak. Anyone else, that's a lazy fly ball to left.

Hey Jason. Congrats on the new role. Hopefully you don’t go WOKE like the rest of them 😂. Was wondering what you thought about the Pirates playing a home game during the eclipse. And if it will be dangerous. Thanks
Jason Mackey
12:37
I don't do politics on here. I have political beliefs, certainly. Cultural ones, too. Yinz don't need to hear 'em. ... Have not thought about the eclipse thing. I don't know enough about it, but I would imagine Major League Baseball and various local health experts would express misgivings if it affected someone negatively.

Will the PG still do the daily up date on the miner league games
Jason Mackey
12:38
We don't do daily updates -- more than scores -- on that stuff because I never saw a point. I always thought a bigger weekly thing, like a feature and top 10 (or 9) list gave readers more. That will be up to Noah and Andrew with how they want to proceed. But I know we will cover it in some capacity, including getting to Indy and Altoona when we can.

One more time, Shim? Saw he went on the 60 day IL, yikes. Any relation to the ankle thing that he dealt with last year or something new and what would be the time frame for rehab and recovery?
Jason Mackey
12:39
Will have Andrew check in with Todd on Wednesday. I saw that as well.

What were the opening day festivities like in Miami’s ballpark? The vibes did not appear high.
Jason Mackey
12:40
I didn't pay much attention, to be honest. I hate Miami. It's maybe my least favorite North American city, up there with Newark and Philly. I couldn't care less. I put on the Grateful Dead (11/17/71) and caught up on some work.

What was the deal with Wolf? Fell out of favor? Didn’t think he’d claimed? Misjudged his talent?
Jason Mackey
12:42
All of the above? Not sure. He has also lost velocity, for reasons not anyone can gather. Have a tough time seeing him NOT get claimed. Young pitcher, former top-10 prospect, those guys are generally lost. I don't love it. Was surprised that's what they did but didn't seem like they saw a path forward with him due to the velocity.

12:42
Why didn’t they sign an extra starter? Too cheap? Liked what they saw out of some guys in camp?
Jason Mackey
12:43
Couple reasons, I think. They legitimately tried on some guys and lost out. Sean Manaea was one. They also thought they had at least one and maybe two trades in place. Didn't work. I think they were probably overly adherent to keeping prospects. They also thought the prices were too high -- so, yeah, if you wanna call it cheap, I won't disagree with you. I do understand the resistance to what those arms go for, but if you feel that way, you also need to pull the trigger on a trade. And they did not, obviously.

Jason, when Skenes comes up, will they limit his innings or give him full reign? Also will Livvy Dunne be at the games like Taylor Swift? #LetsGoBucs
Jason Mackey
12:44
I think when Paul gets up, he'll be mostly full-go. I think they'll limit his innings in Indy to start. Would imagine there's also a cap. But if he's pitching MLB games, can't imagine they would mess with that too much -- like, say, 3 innings or 60 pitches or something crazy.

12:44
Jason, did I give third base coaches something to ponder before they try to exploit my former weaknesses?
Jason Mackey
12:45
I think generally pondering a little more caution wouldn't be bad. Not sure it has anything to do with your arm. But you did make a couple of decent throws.

I’ve seen a lot of confidence come out of this management team. Where does it come from? In my opinion, they are far too confident, bordering on cockiness, when their record consists of multiple underperforming top 5 picks, multiple busted trades and an upper minors that’s bereft of substantial position player talent aside from a few guys.
Jason Mackey
12:48
Yeah, I'm not sure. Now, I do think there's something to be said for confidence in what they're trying to do. How do you want them to act? Scared of making decisions? Openly questioning themselves? Of course they're going to be confident. They could be more open with fans, I'll say that. They could also make better moves. But I would hope they're confident in what they're doing.

Congrats on the new gig Jason, I'm sure you'll do great. Will you focus more on baseball in your new gig than the other pro sports given your expertise? Or dive deep into the Steelers? Do you have an unlimited travel budget?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Thanks, MZ. I do not have an unlimited travel budget. Ha. Nobody does. I will be full travel for Steelers, though. Will travel some, I'm sure, for Pitt and Penn State. If the Penguins would make the playoffs, sure. I know how unlikely that is. Pirates for spring training and maybe throughout the year, depending on how they do. The Post-Gazette does support being there, which is awesome. I won't be focused just on baseball. All sports. But I will write a lot of baseball because I like it, and I think/hope yinz will read it.

When do you think we see Lauer this year? I have to imagine Falter is only here until he gets built up. On that same note, do you think there's a higher chance that we see Lauer or German this year?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Based on German's comments and just general thoughts on the two, I'm going Lauer. At least when it comes to seeing them sooner. No matter how it happens, can't imagine the Bailey Falter experiment lasts long. Then again, I couldn't imagine him being in the starting rotation period.

Is this my only error until Sept?
Jason Mackey
12:51
Probably not. But you won't make many.
Peggy O
12:51
Jason, if Jared has a good first half and me and/or Nicky G look good in the minors, something has to give to clear the way for a precocious TJ, no?
Jason Mackey
12:51
I think we're down the road a ways. Termarr hasn't played a game at Altoona yet. I'd let it play out some more.
Bob Smizik is legend
12:52
I’ll piggyback on the Skenes questions. I understand they’ll have him on an innings limit this year in all likelihood. But what about moving forward beyond this year? We probably have him for 3 or 4 years, so what is the point of excessively babying the arm for another team to reap the benefits?
Jason Mackey
12:53
I'm not defending it -- I think the industry as a whole has gone the wrong way with this stuff -- but it would be to prevent long-term injury. Again, explaining, not defending. Would imagine Skenes pushes those timelines. But you look at 20-per-year jumps, that sort of stuff. I don't like it, but it's reality right now.

What happens with the catching situation when Grandal returns?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Watching Grandal the other day, that doesn't seem close. But as long as Henry is continuing to produce, would imagine that sends Jason Delay to Indy. If, again, Grandal can play.
Frank
12:54
Loved that HR yesterday from Eddy O, doing that on the first AB of your tenure is a heck of a way to endear yourself. I like the power, the ability to hit lefties and the ability to hit breaking stuff (which is a weakness for way too many pirates hitters) how many ABs does he get this year?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I like it, too. He has had a couple solid years. Hard to put a number on it after one game, Frank. I worry that it's not enough, though. Like 200? Not a ton of playing time available.

The automatic runner on second gets to third via sac bunt and scores on a sac fly. The run is charged to the pitcher which raises their ERA. How is this fair?
Jason Mackey
12:55
The extra-inning ghost runner run is never earned. Doesn't affect the ERA.
