Team is winning. Nutting is spending. Gotta complain about something. Either complain about price of beer at ball park or that reporter is a homer.  Some people live in no particular way but their own
Jason Mackey
12:23
I'll complain about the price of beer at the ballpark. It's ridiculous.

Obviously a lot of the hot starts and streaks guys like Castro, Joe etc we’re on aren’t sustainable, but who out of the current young/new guys do you see sticking this year and beyond?
Jason Mackey
12:24
Timely to Cullen's Q: Most sustainable for me on the position player side is Jack. Pitching-wise, probably Oviedo. Really like what the latter has been able to do this season. HIs slider, when it's on, is crazy good.

Pirates have broken our record contract in back to back years. What are the chances we break it again to lock up Cruz next year?
Jason Mackey
12:24
I'd say not nothing. I think they would like to. I think it's more a matter of finding a number that works, which might be hard, honestly.
Marc
12:24
I know an article was put out earlier about which other players could be next in line for an extension, but have you heard anything concrete on the matter?
Jason Mackey
12:25
Have not, Marc. Assuming you mean that they've engaged in talks or there's something imminent. It's rare for that to happen in-season, so I'd couch it with that.

Are the pirates comfortable with Castro at SS moving forward still? It appears Castro’s move to short has made them worse at two positions? Who is the closest of the middle infield prospects?
Jason Mackey
12:26
They're gonna have to be. He's been hitting. Defense isn't great, but if he's productive offensively, they need to figure it out. Maybe you rotate Bae in there more, but I think they're fine with the defensive shortcomings because they like his bat.

Is Todd Tomczyk expected to give an Endy update today?
Jason Mackey
12:26
That was moved to Thursday because of Reynolds.
Marc
12:26
When is Ji-hwan Bae going to wear out his welcome with his defensive miscues?
Jason Mackey
12:27
Bae is 23. First time major league. I'd extend some grace before worrying about wearing out welcomes.

Saw Endy Rodriguez at the Indians game in Indy last night.  He was warming up pitchers in the bullpen and a coach was throwing back to the mound. It seemed like a precaution and he looked well.
Jason Mackey
12:27
Have no way of verifying this, but, if true, good. Certainly hope it's nothing serious. If he's having elbow issues, though, I do think about maybe picking a position that's not catcher and sticking with it.

Hey Jason, we haven't seen Moreta in a few days with Bob Stevenson going out for the 7th. Do you know why? Thanks
Jason Mackey
12:29
That's actually something I planned to check on today. Dauri hasn't pitched in a week. April 19 was his only outing in a 10-day stretch. I know they like Stephenson more in those situations, but there has to be something going on with Moreta. That's not normal. We have a bunch to get from Todd on Thursday.

Good afternoon Jason what do you think about David Bednar and keybryan Hayes play so far this morning
Jason Mackey
12:30
Hey Ryan. Thanks for joining. Bednar has been terrific, his usual. Filling up the zone, challenging hitters. Has been the best closer in baseball. ... Hayes, love his defense, obviously. Gold Glove good. Offense started slow but has been picking up. I like him leading off. Past couple games he's driven a ball early, then gone quiet. But the good swings he's taken have been excellent and noticeably better when it comes to catching the ball out front.

Hi Jason - What’s the general consensus on Bae staying in center? While he’s making some great plays that win games, it’s the routine miscues that lose you games. Is there any indication that his time out there will be limited?
Jason Mackey
12:31
Not avoiding your question, but they like to rotate guys. Bae is part of that. I think he's part of an OF rotation -- and might be less a part of it if others, such as Suwinski, out-hit him. I think painting Bae as a defensive liability is a little nuts and reactionary. He needs to be more consistent, sure. A lot of guys do, which is why they're rotating.

Jason, love your coverage of the Bucs. Life long Pirate fan that was fortunate to grow up watching Stargell and Clemente and unfortunate enough to watch the dreaded Francisco Cabrera hit. It’s been a long struggle but I for one am excited about this team. I wish the locals would start turning out to support the team. I was watching the LSU/Ole Miss game last week end and I have to say Dylan Crews is a beast. He was hitting .493. That was his batting average not his slugging which is .825 with an OPS of 1.465. This guy could be the next Trout or Harper. Will the Bucs draft him. I think it would be a huge mistake if they do not.
Jason Mackey
12:33
Spoke on Crews earlier. If he's the best player available, and it's the best strategy, yeah, I think they will. I'm not gonna criticize crowds or how fans spend their money. It's cold. I have little kids. School nights are hard. The Pirates have been bad for a couple years. Fans should show their approval or disapproval of the club however they see fit. Nobody needs my takes on it.

Went to the Indianapolis Indians game last night and saw Endy Rodriguez warming up pitchers in the bullpen. They had a coach throwing for him, but it looked precautionary. I think he will be back soon.
Jason Mackey
12:33
Got this one earlier. Thanks Brett. Hope you're right. Endy is a good kid.
Noel Gallagher
12:34
Hey Jason.  Feel like the consensus is that the Pirates are going to take Dylan Crews at 1 overall. Is there a chance they talk themselves into taking a stud pitcher?  They have a few arms in the farm, but not a true bonafide ace. Is there a Strasberg or Cole level prospect in this draft they could potentially take?
Jason Mackey
12:34
Dollander or Skenes would be your guys, but I don't know, Noel. I'd have a tough time moving off of Crews given what he's done. I get pitching. I love pitching, believe me. But the kid has been incredible.
Ryan
12:34
Jason, Great start to the season and great to see the Pirates and Reynolds get a long term deal done. If this team is in the race at the trade deadline, do you see GM Ben Cherington making a move for 1 more bat and 1 more bullpen arm?
Jason Mackey
12:35
I think we're getting waaaaaaay ahead of ourselves, Ryan. It's been 24 games.

Mackey keep up the good work a lot of people appreciate your work including asking the hard questions. Love the videos posted on YouTube!
Jason Mackey
12:35
Thanks so much. We need to do more of those.
Ryan
12:35
What player do you see Henry Davis being like?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Not a big comp guy. If I say, "Oh, Buster Posey!" someone will take that and say Mackey predicted Henry Davis will Buster Posey. I'll give you a type: I think Henry be a catcher with above-average pop at the MLB level, probably some strikeout numbers he's always trying to improve and defense that fairly solid -- really strong arm, needs to work on accuracy and also improve blocking. Works his tail off and handles a pitching staff well.

I've watched the Bucs since 1970 & I thought I'd hate new rules. But, I only hate one newish rule, the ghost runner at 2B in extras.I wish they'd revise rules on throws to first - increase allowed throw over to 4. Hate next years proposal of a designated runner allowing both the replaced player and the DR to remain in the game. What's your thoughts on the new rules and will MLB tweak them?  Imagine how many SBs Henderson, McGee & Coleman would have today.
Jason Mackey
12:38
Hey Lee. I love the new rules; however, I'm with you on the designated runner. And, to be clear, I think they're experimenting with that in the Atlantic League. Not sure that's something I would expect to come to MLB in 2024. Too chinsy for me.
Bob
12:38
Jason, did loosening my wallet change the narrative, as they say? I’m trying, man, but miserly is embedded in my DNA. Thanks for listening.
Jason Mackey
12:38
Glad you signed Reynolds, Bob. 'Twas the right move.
JJ
12:38
Jason, keep up the great work.  With most of our one year signings doing pretty well, do you see any of them being extended during the season?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Tough to say, JJ. I think we need to see more. On several levels. Take catcher. Hedges has been great, right? But if you're him, would you wanna come back, knowing the priority will be Endy/Henry next season? Maybe Cutch has a year tacked on. That would make sense. Or Santana if things are really good. But I think you need to give it more time. No player other than Cutch is gonna do something like that after 24 games.
