What are the general thoughts on Bae staying in center? While great plays can win you games, routine errors can lose you games. Is there any type of indication on his “leash” out there?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Man, Bae went from like a 70-grade defender to a DH really quickly. There's no indication on his leash. My goodness. There's an indication that he's a young player who's gonna make mistakes. Nobody said he was Ken Griffey Jr.

What prospects in the system are you the most excited about?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I'm excited to see Ortiz again. Quinn Priester is gonna be a lot of fun. Bubba and Solometo, too. An underrated one is Malcom Nunez. Dude isn't ready, but he's an absolutely monster. Would love to see someone step up at first base.

You don't suck Jason. Mike White sucks but you absolutely do not
Jason Mackey
12:43
Mike White is an institution. He's a great friend and incredible at his job.

It’s pretty obvious Cutch isn’t getting traded at the deadline unless something crazy is offered or if Cutch even allows it. So what’s going to happen at the end of the season? Are we going to extend him or just sign him again in the offseason?
Jason Mackey
12:43
If Cutch wants to come back and is productive, he'll be back. Pirates won't trade him. He won't wanna leave. Only way I see it ending is if Cutch just wants to be done and be a dad.

When is the press conference going to happen for Reynolds?
Jason Mackey

Today at 3.

Jason, can you see a situation where Santana stays all year, even if the Bucs are out of contention?  Seems like he is a valuable clubhouse that can still play plus the guys he would potentially make way for are not off to the greatest starts?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Yeah, I can. It depends on his year and the possible return. Depends on how they would otherwise use those reps, whether Santana might come back, etc. He's absolutely a valuable clubhouse guy, and I think that's something they're very much going to have to weigh.

I wouldn’t rush to lock up Cruz. He’s still pre arb and how he’ll come back from injury is unknown. Yes there is precedent but as he’s pre arb there is no rush. What? Lock him up before he really performs and prices himself out of town? That ol’ engine left central station going 117MPH.
Jason Mackey
12:45
That would be the concern, yes. You're taking a risk, no doubt. Cruz is one player I'm OK betting on.

Do you foresee Endy Rodriquez making it to the big leagues this year? Also with Choi hurt, do you see the 1B we got from the Cards making his MLB debut this year?
Jason Mackey
12:46
Malcom Nunez. Quite possible. But he needs to do a lot more than he has. I do see Endy making it up. The forearm injury adds a wrinkle, but I still expect him -- assuming he's healthy -- to be here by June.

I feel like Connor Joe gets lumped in the group of "veterans" they brought in. But I think a lot of people don't realize that - because he debuted so late - he's still pre-arb and under control through 2027. He's obviously not a 190 wRC+ guy but he could prove to be a very cheap source of productive offense for a long time
Jason Mackey
12:46
No debate here. I like Connor Joe a lot. Have liked him. Thought it was a solid move. Also like his ability to play 1B. As I wrote, I would have shed Choi and used Joe as my 3/4 OF and backup 1B.

This great start has been such a breath of fresh air. I actually expect them to be ahead in most games now. But there are always a few clouds on the horizon, and one for me is the play of the supposed future DP combination of Nick Gonzalez and Julio Peguero. Gonzalez’s whiff rate is alarming and Peguero is doing nothing even though he is repeating AA. For me that means any thoughts of Cruz being moved off short are history and the Bucs need a Plan B at second base. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:48
It's always something, right? And it's not Julio, it's Liover. Yeah, I have a tough time seeing that as the double-play combo of the future. Gonzales has been better, not as worried about him. I wouldn't move Cruz at all. I was impressed with his defense, plus you obviously want the power and speed. He's a must-have for me.

Seriously, did Arenado take a Gold Glove away from Ke'Bryan Hayes last year? He could still keep his other 9 gloves, lol right? Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:48
Hey, Arenado is incredible. I get it. He probably didn't do enough to lose the GG. Still had a great year. But if you ask me who would I rather have at 3B, it's Hayes 100 times out of 100 right now.
12:51
OK, folks. That's gonna be it for the day. On early, off early. Ha. Gotta do a couple things before heading to the park. Thanks so much for doing this. Talk to ya again next week!
