You're a couple of hypotheticals in there. I think there's always the possibility teams can experience growing pains, sure. There's so much that goes into it. We saw it with 2011-12 preceding 2013-15 as well. It's a process.
Janie

Happy Flag Day Jason!🇺🇸  Do you know if MLB is still considering retiring Roberto’s number?  I thought the league missed a golden opportunity to do so last year on the 50th anniversary of his tragic passing.
Jason Mackey
12:32
I thought it did, too. And it should be retired. But if you're not going to do it last year, I don't know when. I know the Pirates would like that, but I have not heard if it has gained a bunch of traction or anything.

No questions for you today Jason.  Just want to express my sympathies to the family and friends of Stan Savran.  He was one the best.  He will be missed.  Rest In Peace.
Jason Mackey
12:33
Yep. Right with you Carl. Losing Stan hit me and a bunch of others in the Pittsburgh media scene hard. He was genuinely beloved.
Smitty
12:33
What are the chances the Buccos become buyers at the deadline?  If so, what position(s)?  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
12:33
Not good, Smitty. Although might depend on how you define "buyer." Could they add something small? Sure. But I don't think you're going to see them mortgage the future to go after 2023 or anything like that.

Good afternoon Jason. All The Pirate pitchers should tread lightly pitching to The Cubs Ian Happ. His career slash line against them is seriously impressive.
Jason Mackey
12:34
Ha. You're not wrong. Looked that up last night. Knew it was high, but wow. He crushes them.
Skenes
12:34
Jason, I think you are being naive if you don’t think the rash of Tommy Johns is not relevant to them picking yours truly. Just saying.
Jason Mackey
12:35
I didn't know I was doing anything. Geesh. I'm pretty sure the Pirates didn't need additional information to realize the rash of arm injuries in MLB. But I don't know what you're saying. That they're gonna pick Skenes because they've had so many injuries? Or they won't because it's so risky to pick a pitcher?
Wayward

I know he has a start tonight but Jared Jones appears to be figuring it out.  Could you see a late season appearance for him at the MLB level?  What do you think his ceiling is?
Jason Mackey
12:36
I could. I've been saying that he's my pick to surprise and force his way to the big leagues this season. The Luis Ortiz Plan, I've called it. I don't know his ceiling, but those things tend to be high when you throw 99-100 mph with four pitches. Athletic kid. Great attitude. I like him a lot.
Kleinschmidt
12:36
If you’re the GM, do you draft the outfielder from LSU or the pitcher from LSU?  Other?
Jason Mackey
12:36
I'd go with Skenes. I can't pass up on the pitcher.
Tuca
12:36
Jason, where will I get my at bats once the large guy returns?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Good question. Not sure we know at this point. I like you as a super sub, provided you hit. That part of your game has kinda fallen off lately.
Mitchy K
12:37
Jason, good call on my bounce back. Too many alarmists in this River town. Gracias.
Jason Mackey
12:37
Alarmists in Pittsburgh? Who are fans of the Pirates? Nooooooo.
Wayward
12:37
Do you think people who complain about the lack of development are conveniently overlooking Cruz, the fact Keller appears to have figured it out, or that Suwinski is seemingly on the verge of another level of production?  Also, you look down at Indy and there is Priester, Endy, Davis, Nunez and even Gonzalez.
Jason Mackey
12:38
I think both can be true. I certainly understand why Pirates fans are upset. They have reasons to be. At the same time, I try to be a voice of reason with some stuff. I don't always succeed, but the truth is most often found in the middle.
Johnny M
12:38
Jason, break up The A's, right? They won again. Beat The Rays again, now 7 in a row.
Jason Mackey
12:38
And who ignited that hot stretch? The Buccos.
Stash
12:39
Jason, easy one for you. A decade from hence, who had the better career, Endy or Hank D?
Jason Mackey
12:39
Good question. Also impossible to accurately awesome. I'll go Henry, though I think they're both gonna be really good.
Re: Clyde S.
12:39
I think Clyde S was asking if Marcano will be the starting second baseman assuming Cruz is healthy enough to play shortstop.
Jason Mackey
12:40
I think Marcano will definitely move off of SS. Don't know if he'll be the starting 2B. That's TBD.
D. Mountain
12:40
Jason, sometimes chatters are just trying to keep things loose. No need to take offense. Let it flow. You be you. Take care.
Jason Mackey
12:40
What did I take offense to?
Lorddale
12:40
Pirates have major problems at catcher & 1st base , with current roster !!!!!!!!!!  Most fans are like me , they cringe when Hedges comes up , horrid ! Im from ILL , coming up end a month for 3 games , I hope the guy doesnt play !
Jason Mackey
12:41
You're allowed to feel however you want, Lorddale. I would argue that, defensively, the Pirates have been the best in baseball this season. I think that worked has helped the pitchers, too. Now, do I wanna see Endy and Henry? Absolutely. But the same reason I think they should promote a guy when he's performing -- and they've been wrong on this in the past -- I also don't endorse promoting a guy in the minors when he's not producing. Endy is hitting like .245 right now. I'm OK riding this out until he gets hot.
Crews
12:41
Jason, pitchers have elbow issues. Pencil me in the burgh lineup for the next decade. Thank you.
Jason Mackey
12:42
You may very well be right. Wouldn't hate it. I think you're gonna be terrific. I just think teams like the Pirates, you have to take risks. Skenes would be one I'd be willing to take.
Skenes
12:42
I’m saying take the pitcher. Life is a gamble. Ever drive the PA Turnpike?
Jason Mackey
12:42
For $133 or so round trip, absolutely.
Johnny M
12:42
Zastryzny has a .563 ERA now this season & has a career .494 ERA.  Thoughts? Next to be DFAed?
Jason Mackey
12:43
It hasn't been great. Believe Ryan Borucki's upward mobility clause is coming up soon. He's been very good at Triple-A. Would make sense as a lefty swap.
Quiet Storm
12:43
Jason, we have to be near the end of the line for Zastryzny, don't we? When he started warming up last night it seemed like we were punting on the game...
Jason Mackey
12:44
If they weren't when he entered, they were soon thereafter. Per my previous answer, wouldn't shock me if they made a move there soon.
Just curious
12:44
to know if Hedges can bunt… in a few games, he’s had a chance to move the runners over, but has swung away.  With his poor average, I would think he would get the bunt sign especially in a tight game.
