Do you think that they are at all worried that he could end up top 2 in ROY voting because at this point once the super two passes what other reason would they have to keep him down?
Jason Mackey
12:41
I really don't think they can contend with that. You can't keep him down forever -- at least i don't think so. Would imagine they wanna guarantee no Super-2, then whatever else happens, happens.

When I was typing this, I was 90 percent kidding, but the more I type this, I think I'm only like 25 percent kidding:  At this point, why doesn't the team just wait until June 20, 2023 to call up Cruz?    Seriously, why wouldn't a GM want to nudge that window one last time?  I mean it'd be utterly immoral, but that's never stopped corporate entities before.
Jason Mackey
12:42
Come on, now. Like my son used to say, "Don't tay dat."
Joel
12:42
Hi, Jason. Thanks for chatting. I was a bit giddy after the Dodgers sweep, so the past 10 days or so have been a useful reality check. My frustration right now is with the middle relief. Are there really no viable alternatives to Banda and Hembree and Stratton? When these guys come in it’s game over for the Pirates. The endless parade of bullpen mediocrity is getting really frustrating.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Don't blame you. It's been rough. They could give Yerry a bigger role. Mears should be back soon. Alldred? ... There's not a ton, honestly. But those guys are also better than how they've pitched.
Troy

What’re your thoughts about how the Keller to Banda situation was handled?
Jason Mackey
12:43
It was a billion degrees and he was at 97 pitches. I have no issue with how Shelton handled Mitch.

12:43
Since the Pirates are waiting until Super 2 passes before Cruz is called up does that signal that they arent going to extend him? To me it makes all the sense in the world to try and sign him like Atlanta and others have done with Albies, Acuna, etc early on. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I wouldn't link one to the other. They can't extend him right now. Need to see him play. They're just covering their butts for now. I don't agree with it. But that's what passing Super-2 would do.
Colin
12:44
Hey Jason, when do you see Martin getting the call to the bigs?
Jason Mackey
12:44
He needs to hit more first. He's been in a bad stretch. Average down to like .216 last I looked.
Brandon K
12:44
I might be in the minority but I agree with the players and Shelton that although they were on a hefty losing streak that they were indeed in almost every game. Sure, there are some things to be discouraged about but nothing to go insane about? Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Umm, you lose nine of 10, I think you can have a more critical self-assessment. That being said, they were playing teams who spend a lot more on players. So, these stretches are going to happen.

What happened to Yajure?
Jason Mackey
12:45
He hurt his back again. He's pitching again with Indy.
Joel
12:45
This Henry Davis HBP thing is actually serious. He’s messing with his career. What is the issue and how can it be corrected?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Persak wrote about this. He needs to not be a hero and get the heck out of the way.
Jordan
12:46
I can’t believe Wilson told the media he thought he pitched well. Did he go back to AAA or still here?
Jason Mackey
12:46
He went back to AAA. He was only there as the 27th man.
Jordan
12:46
CSN looks like a bad fielder. Is he worth just a DH type?
Jason Mackey
12:46
We've seen two games of him in the field. I think he deserves more runway before we jump to any conclusions. ("Get it? JUMP to conclusions?")
Philly Jake
12:46
Bednar available for tonight ?
Jason Mackey
12:47
Ha. Save situation, I would imagine he'll talk his way into it. But only for three outs. Anything else, doubt he pitches.
Sven
12:47
What has been the reason for Reynolds recent success at the plate?
Jason Mackey
12:47
He's relaxed. Honestly. It's not overly physical with him. You can see it in his demeanor. He was wrapped around the axle before. He's not now.
Philly Jake
12:47
Will Greg  Allen ever wear a Pirates Jersey for a major league game ?
Jason Mackey
12:48
Ha. Shades of Chisenhall, huh? I think so, yeah. I refuse to believe he'll be Lonnie 2.0.

Thoughts on Bligh Madris? Has some good hitting numbers this year but isn't a highly rated prospect.  Any chance he can stick at first base?
Jason Mackey
12:48
Yeah, that intrigues me. I don't know. I have not seen a minute of Bligh at first. That said, I like his bat and how he goes about his work. Would imagine he'll do whatever it takes at first. He keeps hitting, man, you're gonna see him.

Not a fan of Shelton's decision making lately. Pulling Thompson after 67 pitches through 5 especially when innings 2 - 5 he only had two balls leave the infield. Then pulling Keller the other night. Let him pitch to Donovan and maybe gets out of that jam with a DP.
Jason Mackey
12:49
I agree on Thompson. I'm fine with pulling Keller there. If you were in St. Louis and felt that awful heat, you wouldn't argue. It was an awful, awful feeling. They're human beings. Gonna get tired.
Eddie
12:49
Do you also feel Shelton has a tendency to sit a player after they’ve had a solid performance (outside of Reynolds and Hayes) especially the rookies? I find it so challenging for young guys to gain any kind of momentum through their play when he is sitting them after a solid performance
Jason Mackey
12:50
He does, yeah. They don't let guys ride it out, which I don't like. He's very into rotations and rest. Again, it's not intentional, like Shelton saying, "Ha. This guy was good. Bench him!" But they have a plan and stick to it more than I think a lot of people would prefer.
Andrew
12:50
When Cruz comes up do we see him hit in the leadoff spot?
Jason Mackey
12:50
I really don't think so. I'm curious to see what Marcano can do there. I think he'll get more fun.

It’s amazing how the Cardinals franchise embarrasses the Pirates yearly. Haven’t finished ahead of them since 1999. Maybe next GM and manager should come from their organization. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:51
It's a useless thought. They're not cutting bait from Cherington/Shelton any time soon, and I don't think we have a final determination on their ability to do the job. But, yeah, obviously I think highly of the Cardinals.
